The sound quality on this isn't brilliant, but what the Roots did really was. The incorporation of the national anthem, Taps, Machine Gun, and even You Dropped a Bomb on Me, was (I think) a clever and inventive way to capture renewed sentiment in a time of a brand new unpopular war.
yeah because anyone who disagrees with your opinion is a dumbass. Good call. I don't like this personally, it sounds too cheesy. I get what they were going for with the anthem thing, but I really didn't like it. I don't think this song was meant to be taken lightly. It's like Ballad For a Thin Man...it has it's own dark rhythm and when you mess with it...you get this. But it's your opinion, and you're entitled to it.
It's poignant. It's dynamic, creative, and well-performed. It's performance comes at a time when kids need to hear this song more than ever. They present it in a way that today's attention-deficit generation can follow. It's on time. Dylan reinterpreted his music over and over and over, experimenting with form and process. Why can't they?
I have many opinions that people disagree with and respect for those that do. However, I feel strongly about this performance. Sorry.
THEY COVERD THIS BETTER AT BONNAROO 2007 :) Captain Kirk soloed running down a alley that split the crowd in half as the tuba player followed. !!!East Coast!!!!
@mespasticpunk, It is high time the artists started to become politically active. It is great to drag out one of the greatest civil rights and war protester of all time. However, I am ready to see the younger, newer, supposedly more tech savvy to come up with some new material and directed more at the war mongering profiteers and bigots of today. This gray haired baby boomer hippie hopes the younger generations will start expressing the outrage!
it's not so easy. I love this song, I love not only to listen to it, but I also love to play it on my guitar and sometimes it brings a tear to my eye, but, on the other hand, those cruel and inhuman masters of war saved my country, when it needed help (a number of times).
damn good cover, i think it would have been a little better had it had the last verse, it's a bad ass verse: And I hope that you die and your death will come soon
I'll follow your casket through the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered into your death bed
Then I'll stand over your grave till I'm sure that you're dead
AWESOME!! I've never heard the roots do something quite like this! To bad Hub is gone but the Sousaphone playing is a sick addition like a heavy heavy synth bass...
This is such a powerful song and it has never been close to as relevant as it is now. But I'm not a big fan of the drum solos and stylistic variation. It should be played straight through and without adornment, so that nothing gets in the way of the rage.
I saw them do this live in Austin and it was off the hook!!! It's worth seeing them live to see this song alone, because it's really an incredible experience, but they never disappoint in a live show.
I agree with you and would like to point out though that elements of Hendrix's "Machine Gun" were used by Kirk Douglas during guitar solos the two times I have seen The Roots live. I think Machine Gun is a more appropriate song as it is a similar protest of war.
is this the whole song though? usually there's another verse at the end, and another guitar solo and all 3 of them going nuts right before that. hmmm.
its not just the USA its the global banks that are the masters of war, these spooks should get it straight

I think this owes as much to Hendrix's "Star-Spangled Banner" at Woodstock - the improvved Taps, for example - as it does to Dylan's masterwork.
