Pigpen is singing lead, Jerry is harmony. all thru the fillmore acid test jerry and pig's microphones were sporadically not working. that is why you hear only Jerry. The complete film of "the acid test" is on youtube. search "merry Pranksters Acid test."
@Jimala3 ughh pig was the lead singer of that band at that time...if ur one of those selfphish jerry lovers who thinks jerry is the only member of the band gtfo
The main singer that you hear IS Jerry Garcia, indeed Pigpen is singing here but he's singing backup, I mean just listen to the dominating voice it's obviously Garcia's voice.
Pigpen IS the lead singer here. If any of you hear Jerry it's because he's singing along with Pigpen. Listen carefully . . . hear him now? Absolutely Pigpen's voice!
Please listen to my big railroad medley(big railroad blues-hog for you-one way out) and let me know what you think. This version by the dead(actually the recording I have is them when they were the warlocks) was the inspiration.rip Jerry and pigpen
@djmoore20041 you couldn't be more wrong, this band if anything is underrated musically. you obviously haven't done any research on the dead and checked out more of their music. this song really doesn't show what the dead are like.
Leiber and Stoller wrote Stand By Me, Is That All There Is, On Broadway, Save The Last Dance For Me, Spanish Harlem, Jailhouse Rock, Kansas City, Hound Dog. (from Small Dead Animals).
Dats some old Grateful Dead singin' some old Leiber and Stoller.
This is an old Coasters song from 1957 with Poison Ivy on the flip - again covered by many people. Pigpen used to sing this originally because he was the R & B fan.
@saladstassio I was wrong about Weir as I recall Jerry & Pig sang this one toghether. That is for sure Garcia doing more than what ever harmony I'm A Hog For You Baby has but eithr way it's fun to listen to. Don't think I'm...wrong...about that.
Is there a version with ONLY Jerry on vocals? This is one of my favorite recordings, but I would like to hear the difference without Pigpen.

Still planted on the East Coast; as was way back when. To be 16 again with all those young-man dreams. Read all about it; extra extra.

This is awful! I think this could only be appreciated if one was high on LSD. This band is sooooooooooo overrated musically.

@6749er ...wrong... jerry is singing the harmony... for some reason pigs mic was really low in volume... listen real hard and you'll hear him!
