@rrrrramone I would add to that that government is more insensitive to the backlash from the consumer. Assuming you don't like a government service, can you choose to not pay for it? No. Value comes from individuals, if a firm produces negative value it necessarily means it did not fulfill the demand well enough and that the input into the firm (resources) had more value when unexploited. Every job the government gives is by nature makework as the gov has no accurate clue where value is.

@ExquisiteDoom At the time, under FDR, SS and and medicare were great ideas because the nation was young and everyone was working. 20 workers putting money in for every person taking money out. The problem we have now is that everyone has passed the buck and theres no money left to take because the nation is getting old.

@rrrrramone To be honest, the economic free rider problem as a social phenomenon the government causes is not a problem reserved to left-wing ideologies. It's simply this. A free market in i don't know... Copper for example causes the price of a pound to become "x". If the government comes in and re-embourse half of the cost to the buyer, then consumers will consume copper as if there was twice more available (or half the cost X/2 ) causing shortages short term. If in reality, copper wasn't as much a necessity as the gov guessed, we just wasted all this extra labor in an industry that is not as important which for one harms overall productivity as the more urgent matters aren't taken care of which means you also lost an important compounding factor for economic growth. The same goes with medicare. And SS simply causes the workforce to lose value as they don't have to work as much, gain experience as much, etc.

@Pooternackle5 Not true, we have more regulations than most countries. I didn't conveniently leave out anything, quite the contrary. Under Eisenhower, our economy was much MORE free. Even with the 90% top marginal tax rate, our economy still had no medicare, no social medicaid, no EPA, no affirmative action, strong borders, a currency still based in precious metals, the rest of the industrialized world in ruins from WWII. Our economy still did well DESPITE the 90% marginal taxes.

@Pooternackle5 The economic sectors of the countries you listed are strong because they manufacture goods and export a lot, and they don't nearly have the amount of regulations the United States does. You have no idea how much better off those countries would be economically if their social programs were completely gone and the free-markets were allowed to work. That isn't to say that that's what SHOULD happen because it DOES work well for those relatively small countries.

The western European countries are MUCH different than America, and what works there may very well NOT work in the United States. The United States has too many corrupt politicians passing illegitimate legislation that protect certain sectors of the economy that consequently drive up prices. You don't see this as much in western European countries. The United States has 50 states, and 300,000,000 people - big difference
