The problem is that he doesn't do it reasonably. He's seen constantly opening bottles of beer and absolutely every time the gang is out, he's drinking.
Well, he is an alcoholic as you say and he's never very good at staying sober. Even the girl at the hotel I mentioned said that he wasn't drinking responsibly. And the gang is pretty good at just not noticing things that they don't want to see.
