Cal looks like a model, tall, think and long neck with high cheek bones and gorgeous smile. The Velvelettes may have not been the big stars at Motown but seeing them still kicking it today as a group is a far better blessing than being number one stars back in the day.
I am familiar with the Diana Ross version of this Ashford and Simpson track. This Velvelettes version is the original and best. It is simply awesome. Tamla genius.
Cal tells the story that Diana Ross heard her record the vocal in 1966 and remarked that it was a good song and one she would like to record. Diana did record it a few years later and I agree that it is a great version too.
i wish there was another clip from the 60's of them performing!!!! the new performances are good, but i would love to see more of the older performances! needle in a haystack/he was really.. are my TRACKS! velvelettes are def at the top of my list next to the supremes, royalettes, vandellas..
I thought this was from Robin Seymour's program as someone else here said. Many other Motown acts performed on "Teen Town: and "Swingin' Time." The students on these shows were consistently square. There's one segment with a teacher (from Ecorse, Mich.) who's clapping out of time. There's a charm in all that. When you can hear Led Zeppelin playing in a bank lobby, where's the rock and roll rebellion? Thanks for this video. Robin has a page on Facebook. He's still kicking.
Well BoyNextDoor I am a Supremes fan, a huge fan and I use to stand up for everything Mary did and Diana back in the days but now, being older I accept what is truth and let it be. The Velvelettes had a revloving door with members but yeah, you're right, they have their original members back with them. I never saw them on TV in the 60s so this group was foreign to me other than hearing their hit records. I was more tuned to Motown's other girl groups.
I've got to say this, I think the Velvelettes we're as good as the Supremes. I just don't think they were given the air play but their songs were unforgettable...... thankyou for posting xx
bizarre I know but Leona Lewis bears a striking (physical) resemblance Caldin Gill. Still, I detract...
There are a handful of songs that you can listen to....back-to-back, on continuous play. I'm happy to say this is one of them. This song just sends me to another place ;)
Nice performance but Cal looks uncomfortable and as for the Marvelettes being gawky, forget that. In watching their performance the Marvelettes was the only girl group out of the four at Motown who seemed to get down and do it smoothly. NO wonder Flo Ballard had a hard time dancing while subbing in that group. And you're right both performances of DMWB on Teen Town and Hullabaloo showed that the Marvelettes had it going on.
Vincent. I don't agree that Cal looks uncomfortable, and as one of the Velvelettes biggest fans, you'd expect me to say that.
However, although I agree that the Marvelettes had it going, the Velvelettes also had it going and still do...and at least they still have their original members performing.
@dmfsupremes are you serious? The Marvelettes were not gawky on tv, just watch the "Dont Mess With Bill" performance that was pure class and a great performance, show The Marvelettes a little respect huh
@theboyfromxtown I once saw a clip on a TV show (perhaps 'Motown at 60', or another serious distortion of when they operated) of them singing "Needle in a Haystack" that appeared to be from Hullaballoo... It seems a lot of pop performers in the 1960s turned up on rather unusual programs (though Hullaballoo wasn't unusual)
I suspect you are referring to the clip on Motown 40 when they showed a very short clip of the Velvelettes singing He Was Really Saying Something. That was from America Bandstand.
Cal doesn't recall being on Hullabaloo....she tells me that there was so much going on, it was hard to keep track!
@theboyfromxtown Oh, is THAT what it was from? (That's explains them lip-synching. Yes, it was a short clip from Motown 40, which I used to have on videotape.. They only had one chart hit in the UK, but some of their songs seem to be VERY popular there, and are often played in clubs and weddings...
The Motown artists don't refer to it as "lip synching"...they call it "pantomining the song". I kind of like that better! HAHA
The ladies performed regularly in the UK in the noughties solely on the strength of just a few released singles.....that tells you how popular they are here in the UK.......whether or not they were hits. That makes me very happy. Plans are for them to come in 2011 too.
You can see recent clips of them perfomring live in the UK on youtube.
@theboyfromxtown Yes... have you ever seen that clip of The Supremes on The Andy Wiliams Show doing "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone"? They "pantoomine the song" but then Diana also sings along to it into a microwave (I'm REALLY suprised no one ever tripped with all those mike wires on the floor), which gives it sort of an eerie sound...
@dmfsupremes I don't think the teenagers were miserable looking. They were clapping along and moving to the music. Things were just more conservative back then, and more respectful of the performers. Today's audiences sometimes forget they are just that...the audience. They think they're the stars. I'm sure the teenagers in the video realized that what they were watching was very special. It's just how we were raised "back in the day."
THIS has made my day. i am so glad to see footage of the group back in the day. They are a good looking group, and even currently they are phyne! Ms. Cal is absolutely stunning! From teh clips I have seen, she is still just as stunning!
@shmuli9 Wow! So long after the song was released....well, released here I guess. I had never ehard it until I purchased their gretest hits. In fact, I has only heard two of their songs when i boight the greatest hits. I ust liked the way they looked on the cd cover.
@kpitt1204 Yes, in the UK they REALLY are into re-releases. A couple years ago, "Amarillo" (a 1972 hit for Tony Chrstie) was re-released and made the UKtop 20 and the Irish Top 5...
As for how the Velvelettes looked on the compliation CD, the have on pink dresses and the "60's model pose", right?
One more thought: They obviously have been rehearsed within an inch of their lives. That was a Motown trademark. The choreography was kept simple and unintrusive but striking and there was never any sloppiness in performance.
My favourite Motown song, and I never thought I would see The Velvelettes sing it. (Lip-synch, I know.) Thank you. You've made a fat priest very happy.
The girl on right I believe was Annette Rogers; that's how she is indentified in publicity photos from Motown. But the name is suspicious, being the first name of a Vandella and the last name of a Marvelette. And I do believe I've seen another name given for her in later publicity. I can't get over how gorgeous Cal is and how graceful; she never got the spotlight from Motown she should have and Berry gave every excuse in the world for not releasing a Velvelettes album.
I think was the later lineup put forth by Berry Gordy. If so, that is Sandra Tilley barely recognizable on the right and I can't remember the name of the lady on the right except she used the last name Rogers at some point. I have the name at home and will try to post it shortly. She also used another name. Carolyn, who really was Cal, is absolutely stunning visually and vocally here. She really was a great Motown beauty.
How wonderful to see this; so little has survived from their Motown heydey. Diana rerecorded it as a followup to "Someday We'll Be Together," which was to have been her first solo single. After it was decided to make it a Supremes single, she recorded "Time and Love" for her first single. At last we got a first single, "Reach Out and Touch," by which time all fans were exhausted from anticipation!
This is great. Can't believe I just discovered this. This has to be one of the rarest clips in existence for this underrated group. I have never ever seen a clip of them from their Motown heyday....finding them on tape is literally like finding a needle in a haystack (pardon the pun). You bet I just downloaded this to my computer and also alerted all of the members of my Yahoo music group to come check it out! Thanks again.
@divalish He's talking about Diana ross her real name is Diane and if you can tell this version came out before Diana ross's so they can't ruin their own song
@divalish Are you fucking serious? this song was written for cal in 1966, Diana's version didnt come along until 1970, if anything Diane ruined Cal's song
