because the fact that the mods can only be tethered for now, tethered meaning every time u turn it on it will have to either reset or go into itunes for it to work again, and it wont be jailbroken again and again

ok. for everyone with the 1600 error. Here is the solution. do not put your iphone into dfu mode. plug the iphone in with the cable via usb and open itunes. Then, after you have created the custom firmware bundle right click on restore and then select the custom 3.1 firmware. THATS THE TRICK. No error. Subscribe to ME :). Any questions let me know.

I subscribed after watching your great 3.0 guide for Mac and PC. I have a PC and my iPhone got here today with 3.0 firmware (did not update it to 3.1). Do you recommend to wait for a 3.1 PC guide, jailbreake using your 3.0 guide, or find a MAC and do this with PwnageTool?

when creating your custom firmware ipsw, you MUST deselect ACTIVATE. Or your phone will have everything except cellular connection. Your iphone will automatically activate itself through itunes (if u have att)...

yeah. you HAVE to deselect "activate" if you dont, then u will have no service. Now, you have to create a new custom firmware and deselect the activate box. Then select that firmware when right clicking on restore.

I tried jailbreaking like a month ago....like 4 times. never worked 4 me. had 3.0.1 firmware when I first tried. once I got to the downloading jailbreak date icon showing disc drive IT NEVER FCKING LOADS. just sits there till I have to restore my ipod touch. WTF IS WRONG???!?!?!

not illegal (yet). apple is constantly in the process of attempting to make it illegal, but it is not. however, it does void your iphone/ipod warranty. this should be a nonfactor though, because if soemthing messes up with your device, you simply have to restore to factory settings, and all jailbreak data will be erased, meaning you devices warranty looks as if it was never voided.

i was updating from 3.0 firmware and i have a jailbroken 3gs.

the dfu mode would never show up on pwnage Application. so i did it myself by counting. once it went on dfu mode. itunes picked it up. and i selected custom restore...but then i got a eerror message saying..."the iphone "iphone" could not be restored. error 1600"

nope i have itunes 9.0 not the 9.01 or watever the last update was...i just read that when you download pwnage. you should actually PUT The pwnage in your hard drive...instead of running it as a temporary drive..(check cydia on iphone and click on upgrading to 3.1 link on the cydia home page) .im bout to try it.

The problem I'm having is that when I finish the jailbreak and the iPhone finishes, it doesn't activate so I can't make calls or recieve any either. I've JB'd my iPhone before and I know it worked cause I had Cydia installed, but its not worth shit if I can't talk on the phone, right? Hehehe

Hey man, when creating your cutom firmware you must go into pwnage tool, then general and DESELCT activate. When you leave it selected, it is commanding your iphone to activate, when it is already activated. This will solve your problem. Let me know when it works.

It is NOT possible to use Pwnage Tool to jailbreak an iphone 3GS running iPhone OS 3.1 already. Pwnage Tool will only allow you to restore to a jailbroken 3.1 firmware from a jailbroken 3.0 or 3.0.1 firmware.

Downgrading doesnt work, the baseband is updated if iTunes is used to update to 3.1, you can jailbreak but not unlock.
