It helps that the Subaru's unibody alone is pretty strong (but doubt the unibody alone would withstand THAT hard of an impact), but the reason why they're alive is mostly credit to modern-day roll cages :)

@NiallatUTube not true did the same thing to make STOCK IMPREZA non WRX or STI rolled on to the roof and slid for about 100 ft. and stopped about 3 ft short of a curb that wouldve cut my head off. call it luck but my suby saved my life and i was doing about 50 in a 20 and caught a lip. the car could handle the road because it has the same suspension as a WRX but night driving mixed with a bad cut in the road equaled disaster similar to this.

They have to be build after FIA Regulations, even in small local Rallys in europe. Don't know how it is in the US.

@Disposition446 It did, and that tells you how brutal the rolls were that the roll cage smashed down like that. I've never seen a WRC car roll cage fold like that one did. Either there were some construction issues with that roll cage, or those were three of the hardest roof impacts any WRC car ever suffered.

They knew that was going to be a bad one. Phil just stopped in mid-pacenote when they floated off that crest and got ready to take a ride. And boy, did he ever.

its an army old training area built during the second world war for the german forces, there are traing areas like this all over germany. the concrete blocks are designed to keep tanks on the path. considering they are bulit to withstand impacts from 50 ton plus tanks they are pretty solid and probably one of the last things you'd wanna hit in a car especially at speed. so relly it just goes to show how excellent the safety cells are in modern rally cars

I remember seeing this when it happened, and I as I recall, it was the result of a mistake in the pacenotes. They didn't realize the turn was so sharp, and you can see there's no way they could have made such a corner at that speed. The understeer is only because he was desperately trying to save it.
