  • This is probably dubbed, isn't it!?

  • @aplantage Oh sure - this was 1957! But that really IS John Barry's voice.

  • @davidwrightatloppers I wasn't referring to the necessity of the technical process, but precisely my doubt that this is Barry's voice. Still have trouble believing it. They often used different voices, even in the case of huge stars.

  • @aplantage Yes, but these two vocal pieces of John's are well documented - and there has never been any questioning of their authenticity. John was a standup guy. For a LONG time, John even let Monty Norman take full credit for The James Bond Theme...

  • @davidwrightatloppers Shame on him for a bad Elvis imitation then. Norman won the court case regarding the Bond Theme.

  • @aplantage In those days, EVERYBODY imitated Elvis - even Cliff. But John would go on to produce a body of work that everyone ELSE imitated.

As for the James Bond Theme court cases - Norman was given legal recognition (and ROYALTIES) for providing the melody. But that piece of music is about WAY more than that. And the court accepted that if anyone asked him (he never VOLUNTEERED the information) John could legally claim he'd EXPANDED it into the piece everyone knows - with his ARRANGEMENT.

  • @davidwrightatloppers Nobody who knows anything doubts the importance of an arrangement. But previously, people less knowledgeable would tend to claim that Barry actually composed it. And I wasn't doubting Barry's merits as a composer later. In fact, he's one of my favorites.

  • @aplantage Our comments "crossed"! Years ago, I actually wrote a multiple choice quiz for the UK's Channel Four - one question of which was "Who composed the James Bond Theme"? The possible answers were: Monty Norman, John Barry - and a couple of other composers whose names I don't recall (it WAS nearly twenty years ago!)

Of course - most people went for Barry!

On some of the quiz answers I had put additional info. On that one, I stated that Norman had WRITTEN it - and Barry had only arranged.

  • @davidwrightatloppers Quod erat demonstrandum, as they say in mathematics. Great anecdote, thanks for sharing.

  • @davidwrightatloppers Come to think of it, in this context it's especially amusing that I often thought that the Bond theme sounds a bit like the intro of Presley's "Surrender".

  • @aplantage I couldn't remember THAT one - so I looked it up on YouTube (it's there) - and - you're RIGHT, it DOES!!

Of course, Barry was not above "influences" in his early days. His pizzicato strings (particularly on those Adam Faith backing tracks) had already been done on the last recordings from Buddy Holly.

But gawdblessim, he certainly made up for them later - Barry's music DEFINED a major chunk of the Sixties...

  • @davidwrightatloppers I agree that Barry is one of the icons of the Sixties, and the Bond films wouldn't be half of what they are without him. Nothing against influences whatsoever. Glad you agree regarding "Surrender". I never read anyone mention the fact.

  • @aplantage I s'pose it's because that particular number wasn't a biggy in the Elvis catalogue. But it certainly DOES contain the James Bond Theme's riff.

I hope people READ this exchange - it has been highly entertaining! Good luck, sir - wherever you are!

    Mike.

  • @davidwrightatloppers Thanks very much, and dito. :-) I'm German, but I'm a huge fan of British music and films. And btw, I'm female. Don't know why, but on the net almost everyone first assumes that I'm male.

  • @aplantage - I APOLOGISE. Men assume only other men know anything about music and that women merely appreciate music. TOTALLY sexist! And I fell RIGHT into the stereotype. Sorry!

  • @davidwrightatloppers I suspected as much, so I took it as a compliment. ;-)

  • Барри -Супер !!! А какая отличная музыка к фильмам о Джеймсе Бонде !!!!!!!

  • RIP John

  • John Barry is the best. OMG

  • John Barry is the man
