So plasticine is a popular one, but there are many depending on your project, location, resources, etc.

but remember.. you do necessarily need to use clay...

Thanks. Actually, this is just the first part of two. The second part's more ambitious ; I want to try to convey eroticism using the liquid language of the clay. It's tough because this is only the third animation I've done. I'm procrastinating now.
