I conceed with phersh2's comments. I love U2 as an older band, and yes, 'No line' is a fantastic album with actually not too much pretention. HOWEVER, this holds a certian atmosphere as a cover which in my personal opinion bypasses the wailing on the original.

The bands mentioned are all great song writers, being a big fan of indie music i still rate some of the old bands and the singers that left the bands. The stone roses and Ian Brown for example, great music all round. A big debate can start on this as all bans mentioned are great in there own right.

I just recently got to know Elbow's music, and I can say I quite like it, but I don't like their sound too much. It's all "wwwoooo", as my friend would say - "toilet echo". They have great compositions, but their sound is sometimes too annoying.

I'm a massive U2 fan and I do like the original better but this is gorgeous. I'll get alot of thumbs down for this but I'm not sure the voice completely does it for me here. It sounds good but the way they've arranged the music I can't help but feel it calls for a female voice. Also as someone else mentioend the original builds in a more organic way but still this is a really really good cover. I like that they did something different with it.
I like it, it's a nice cover and I generally don't like U2 covers because people stuff them up too much.
But having said that, the original is still the best, Bono's vocals are elevating, and at the same time soulful and the music is a little dirtier which reflects the subject matter.
To me U2's version has more outrage and indignation at the situation whereas Elbow's feels more like a lament.
The original felt desperate. And could almost move you to tears with the first line... I don't know, this is incredibly nice and accomplished and a great version. But I completely disagree with one of the comments - I think Bono sounds he knows the woman, and Garvey sounds like he knows the song.
I ain't gonna say this is better/worse than the original BUT: if I want to hear this song in future, this is the one I'll listen to. Garvey sounds like he knows the character in the song. U2 sound like they read about her.
I think it's a bit harsh to say the U2 version puts this to shame. On balance I prefer the original. It builds in a more organic way and is more dramatic at the end, but for me Guy's voice really adds something to the song.
Hey liked it, it is different, I love u2. And I usually hate U2 covers cause they are never well done but this is good; but I still prefer the original one, Bono's voice is not comparable to this one, and Edge's gutiar gives you chills, even though it doesn't shine much in this song.
it's a bit lighter than the original, I think, a bit happier. Whether that's a good thing or not I couldn't say.

Dangersous thing to do - cover a U2 song = risk of comparisons. Good thing they did a nice job on it, injecting their own personality on it without disrepect to the original. (For a glaring example of how not to cover classic songs - see Scissor Sisters desicration of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" )

I just recently got to know Elbow's music, and I can say I quite like it, but I don't like their sound too much. It's all "wwwoooo", as my friend would say - "toilet echo". They have great compositions, but their sound is sometimes too annoying.

I'm a massive U2 fan and I do like the original better but this is gorgeous. I'll get alot of thumbs down for this but I'm not sure the voice completely does it for me here. It sounds good but the way they've arranged the music I can't help but feel it calls for a female voice. Also as someone else mentioend the original builds in a more organic way but still this is a really really good cover. I like that they did something different with it.

I like it, it's a nice cover and I generally don't like U2 covers because people stuff them up too much.
But having said that, the original is still the best, Bono's vocals are elevating, and at the same time soulful and the music is a little dirtier which reflects the subject matter.
To me U2's version has more outrage and indignation at the situation whereas Elbow's feels more like a lament.
My 2 cents anyway.
They're both fantastic bands :-D

The original felt desperate. And could almost move you to tears with the first line... I don't know, this is incredibly nice and accomplished and a great version. But I completely disagree with one of the comments - I think Bono sounds he knows the woman, and Garvey sounds like he knows the song.

I think it's a bit harsh to say the U2 version puts this to shame. On balance I prefer the original. It builds in a more organic way and is more dramatic at the end, but for me Guy's voice really adds something to the song.

Hey liked it, it is different, I love u2. And I usually hate U2 covers cause they are never well done but this is good; but I still prefer the original one, Bono's voice is not comparable to this one, and Edge's gutiar gives you chills, even though it doesn't shine much in this song.
