My first tattoo was on my wrist. Its a butterfly with my best friends initials who passed away in February of 2010. The outlining was the only bad part. Coloring in is a breeze!

But bring someone that can be there with you and you can squeeze their hand if needed =P Never had to try so don't know if it helpes. No. The tattoo artist draws the outline on a piece of paper that "bleeds" on to your skin. Then the artist draws on top of the outline on the skin. I didn't get any shadowing on my tattoo, but I did get coloring done.
Yes, the coloring does hurt. But the pain is temporary. Be prepared to feel pain during the actual tattooing when the needle digs into your skin, but as soon as the needle is out, the pain is gone. You do feel some slight pain in the days following but it's not that severe. While the needle is in the skin, it feels like a really bad cat scratch.
