I remember this concert. It was my first time see Whitney live then I saw her on every concert tour since including the current one. Over the years he voice has change so much and I was worried about seeing her live but after the concert I realize to is different but still amazing. I love it. If you see her performance at Barbra Streisand's Kennedy Honours performance and if you've seen her performances of Listen and At Last and many other songs of hers you will see what a talented SINGER she is as well as the performer she is.

I saw the clip this morning from her recent Australian performance where the fans walked out during her performance and it brought tears to my eyes that she threw away her gift like that... heartbreaking. You clearly don't know what you're talking about. Contrary to popular belief, the MAIN reason why Whitney lost her voice was because she damaged it during The Bodyguard Tour. Two years of non-stop singing of powerhouse ballads will damage anyone's voice. Whitney developed nodules which can literally take persons voice away. That's what happened to Julie Andrews. Whitney never got the surgery to remove the nodules due to the risks. Her smoking obviously didn't make things better.

You don't know squat about R&B. Before Beyonce crossed over she sold over 100 million with girl group Destiny's child as R&B performers as did Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. There are countless R&B 100 million sellers too numerous to mention here.
Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Babyface, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross The Temptations, Janet Jackson to name a small few. And there are many more dog breath. You need to do better research before you start running off at the mouth.
Also it's important to note that Whitney Houston's album entitled "Whitney Houston" debuted as an R&B success story. This album sold over 25 million worldwide. Rolling stone ranked it # 254 of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Crossover success is definitely a plus but Many great R&B artists have achieved phenomenal success without crossing over to pop music and much of their music which I like to call "real music" is still selling to this day. You need to get with the program!

Yes, drugs/smoking was a big contributor to the decline in her voice IN LATER years. The biggest reason Whitney's voice was damaged was due to the extensive Bodyguard Tour, which lasted over 2 years. She developed vocal nodules do to her extensive singing. Add to that, the vast majority of Whitney's repertoire is powerhouse ballads, and you have a recipe for disaster.
I'm sorry, what evidentiary proof do you have to the contrary to support your absurd statement that Whitney has "absolutely NO range", anymore? I just hear a snippet of Whitney performing in Moscow last week and her range was as good as anything i've heard since 1998. She was hitting all of her classic head notes. Who cares what is now, that was amazing at its own time and the fact that not too many people even heard of this song back then is a shame. Jennifer Holiday was great too, but this recording just states that nobody can top this even now. Her voise has had some trouble but like any addict in true recovery takes on way too much too soon. I wish Whitney still had that great voice, I mean she sound good but she is knot the same person she was back then. I think she could do well again but she got to truly won't to do so. When she does that everyone will say there the Whitney we were waiting for, I hope that day will come soon.

It would be a toss up between Holiday and Houston. However Holiday sings "And I Am Telling You" better than Houston.
Houston sings this song better than Frenchie, although Frenchie does this song really well too. Bianca Ryan girl was good for an eleven year old. She's like a mini-Christina Aguilera. However, she's not as good as the other singers, not even close.

never in my life did i think it was possible for a human voice to be able to do that. this is unreal. that power, breath control, vibrato, and amazing stylization takes her into a league beyond any other singer i've ever heard in my life. put any singer next to whitney (in her prime) in a battle of power and strength, and they will fail miserably. no one will ever match the Queen, Ms. Houston.

I remember this concert. It was my first time see Whitney live then I saw her on every concert tour since including the current one. I hate that people think they know everything there is to know about a performer when they don't even see all of the things that they are capable of. If you see her performance at Barbra Streisand's Kennedy Honours performance and if you've seen her performances of Listen and At Last and many other songs of hers you will see what a talented SINGER she is as well as the performer she is.

@veronica896 Mariah does not have the worst technique ever at all. Christina, Jessica, etc have horrible techniques. Mariah has NEVER sang with constant high larynx, nasally, throaty or forced belts. @yellow85 Beyonce can sing very well. As a matter of fact she's one of the only singers that's making big money, who really can sing. Not only can she sing she also does a good job at writing her own songs. Unlike Whitney, Beyonce doesn't do drugs so I think she will keep her voice for a very long time. Remember this is Whitney in 1986. A far cry from Whitney of 2006 and now.

Wish I had a time machine to go back in time and hear Whitney sing like this. I saw the clip this morning from her recent Australian performance where the fans walked out during her performance and it brought tears to my eyes that she threw away her gift like that... heartbreaking. You clearly don't know what you're talking about. Contrary to popular belief, the MAIN reason why Whitney lost her voice was because she damaged it during The Bodyguard Tour. Two years of non-stop singing of powerhouse ballads will damage anyone's voice. Whitney developed nodules which can literally take persons voice away. That's what happened to Julie Andrews. Whitney never got the surgery to remove the nodules due to the risks. Her smoking obviously didn't make things better.

she should of song more soulful songs like this and upbeat soulful songs also. But from what i got, clive didnt want her to go that way. He wanted her to sing pop. But if she did mostly or all soulful and gospel, she would've been..just...(there are no words to describe), AMAZING..fo real!.

She also would have been a massive failure if she had been just another typical soul/R&B singer. Clive wanted to do with Whitney what Barry Gordy did with The Supremes ... he wanted her to have massive crossover appeal. That's why early "Pop Whitney" had the long, light brown, curly hair and bright colored outfits. Soul singers don't appeal to White audiences, Pop artists do. It was a smart move for Clive. He exposed Whitney to a much larger audience.

Rhythm and Blues is the cradle of what has nurtured American pop Music. Miss Houston was sold not just on her amazing vocal ability but like so many other American vocalist she was sold on her beauty and style as well. As someone pointed out she was for Clive Davis what Diana Ross was to Berry Gordy.

You obviously are someone stuck ten years in the past. R&B as we know it has been dead since the early 2000s. NO ONE is doing R&B anymore. Everyone is pop. Beyonce, Rihanna, and countless others, have all transitioned to pop. And quite frankly, you're a moron if you really think that Whitney would have been anywhere near as big as she was, had she been a strict R&B singer. Name me some R&B singers who have sold 100 million+ records, and then we'll talk.

You don't know squat about R&B. Before Beyonce crossed over she sold over 100 million with girl group Destiny's child as R&B performers as did Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. There are countless R&B 100 million sellers too numerous to mention here.
Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Babyface, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross The Temptations, Janet Jackson to name a small few. And there are many more dog breath. You need to do better research before you start running off at the mouth.

Also it's important to note that Whitney Houston's album entitled "Whitney Houston" debuted as an R&B success story. This album sold over 25 million worldwide. Rolling stone ranked it # 254 of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Crossover success is definitely a plus but Many great R&B artists have achieved phenomenal success without crossing over to pop music and much of their music which I like to call "real music" is still selling to this day. You need to get with the program!

Destiny's Child sold about 50 million albums and singles and maybe 30 million albums as a solo artist. There are not countless R&B stars who have sold over 100 million records. There is only one diva league when it comes to sales and those are Celine/Mariah/Whitney/Madonna. The end.

none of them except Janet have sold 100 million records...check billboard or just google record sales. all legends and the real voices but you know they haven't sold that many records. whitney though, has sold 170million. making her the second best selling female artist of all time...and one of the top 20 best selling artist of all time!

@Neno8403 .. I think by going pop not only did her audience expand, but I also think that it allowed people to see that she has real vocal skills and the ability to sing with the best and even out sing them as well. I mean there's isnt any R& B singers that can do what Whitney was doing.

You guys are really ignorant sometimes. Whitney recorded the songs pop like, but on her tours she sings them all different every time with the r&b, jazz, soul, and opera twist to it. Whitney is phenomenal and can't be classified as solely a pop nor soul singer. The woman has even done opera, and has very operatic approach to singing.

I watch this video all the time and comment it for 4:56 WOW what a chest! her lungs are so winded and POWERFUL! I have never heard a note that high sang in chest....normally a singer would transition into head voice...but whitney is whitney! ha, AMAZING!

She Still has that voice, but part of that voice..the Devil has taken it away with those Drugs. Yes, God Can take away your gift, if you're (example: bragging about it, saying you sing the best, etc...ya'll know what I mean). But I say Gospel is the Best Way To Go. (Not Judging Anyone. @BradleyJ18 the bible says that the gifts and callings of God are WITHOUT repentance in other words He wont take them back, however you can "self sabotage" your gift but thats your choice. There is no doubt that Whitney's gift is from God and we probably will not see someone that sings near as good as her in this generation.

Even if Whitney had never touched a cigarette or an ounce of drugs, she'd never be able to sing this song like she did in 1986 for obvious reasons. Age as well as her voice naturally changing. Whitney's voice sounded music different in 1990 than it did in 1986 so how would you figure she'd be able to do this today? Come on now.

No Patti did not. Patti sounded worst in her tone when she aged along with Aretha. Patti knows how to scream well, but her tone was more raspy as she aged.

With all due respect, you really haven't a clue as what you are talking about, just someone running with the "popular opinion".
Yes, drugs/smoking was a big contributor to the decline in her voice IN LATER years. The biggest reason Whitney's voice was damaged was due to the extensive Bodyguard Tour, which lasted over 2 years. She developed vocal nodules do to her extensive singing. Add to that, the vast majority of Whitney's repertoire is powerhouse ballads, and you have a recipe for disaster.

I'm sorry, what evidentiary proof do you have to the contrary to support your absurd statement that Whitney has "absolutely NO range", anymore? I just hear a snippet of Whitney performing in Moscow last week and her range was as good as anything i've heard since 1998. She was hitting all of her classic head notes. Again, I know smoking play a huge part in her vocal decline but that wasn't the main factory. Overuse of her voice due to touring and the nodules that weren't removed, was the biggest.

@MrSoulshock4444 Whitney G5 G5# recently at like easily being she a soprano! She was sick and did that full chest. But here she used mix voice Now I can see for the D6/Eb6 thats a belt and it is mostly chest but has some head.
