Always loved these cars, to me it was only second best to the Datsun 240z before it. Both great cars, I would have got 1, but in the UK / Ireland buying 1 an FD RX-7 is not much more than an FB so I went for the FD. Love the rotary's though brilliant engine.
I own one and it is super reliable, cheap to fix, handles like a dream and has tuning potential beyond belief! I know no other car that can both drift and take corners like a F-1 car with stock suspension.
wow i found the original sales slip for my 1981 mazda rx7 and it cost $14,758, and that was 2 years befor this car, and it didnt have many options put on ot
Between the FB and the FC that I used to have, I definitely have to say the FB was
the wilder feeling one of the two. Awesome cars and get a much worse rep than what they really are. No, your not going to have to do a rebuild every 10,000 miles.
@SPEK240 check out my 280zx. THEN tell me they are terrible. Also, a 280zx was a faster car than the rx7 in every way. the rx7 only had 100hp back then.
I owned a 1982 Mazda RX7. They were very fast and super fun cars especially for the times. I loved it! I actually own a Ferrari 308 gtsi and it goes 0-60 in 5.9, so again the Mazda was a great bargain back then.
My grandparents and uncles were in Glacier national park on the going to the sun road when this was filmed. They were telling me about it so I thought I'd check it out. Awesome!
Come from a family of American car owners, they wanted nothing to do with the Japs. I was the first to buy a Jap car and this was it. But I bought it used, so I didn't really GIVE my money to Japan, the guy actually went out and bought a Mustang. But this WAS the best vehicle I ever owned, you might hate the "rice burners" but this car was 1)reliable 2) freaking quick and stylish. I NEVER EVER had a problem with this car, not once, never.
Its 0-60 was about 9 seconds, same as the Acura RSX. Excellent for 1983, and par even for a modern car. And most Mazdas shine even better on the twisties, especially the rotaries.
Cheap Civic/Corolla/Focus: 12s, Civic Ex/others: 10s or 9s for the fancy ones, BMW 3/Civic Si/Mini/etc.: 8s, flagship sports cars: 6s or 5s.
I have 1985 RX-7 for sale. Has front end bumper/body damage. Runs great! I had the motor replaced at a mazda dealer and have not put much mileage on it. Also has a fully new exhaust system. It is in North Eastern Indiana in the Fort Wayne area.
Sweet! I totally own a 1983 Rx7, and I love it. It's nice to see an old commercial giving the old 12A some props. The rotary is unlike any engine ever built, and with a little work can be really quick.
i race cars also but dont act like dickhead!!! the fact that the add is how many years old now and back in those days this would have been quite impressive makes you look like a real tool...oh yes what cc was your mini clubman race car haha
Lack of tourqe is made up for by a redline at 8k rpm.. This is a revving machine, nothing that you should compare with a V8 that over revs at 4k rpm..
And 0-60 in 6 seconds.. this was 1983.. That was rly good for a car below 10 000 USD at the time
This was engineering genius. If people know the history of this car, they know that Felix Wankle actually was the original inventor of what would become the Rotary engine. Like most thing's, the Japanese took an idea and made it work. They did that to something else that we said goodbye to a few years ago, it was called the "VCR."
I've owned three RX-7s, and my first one (and also my first car) was a 1985 which I still miss so much. I've owned more than twelve cars so far, and I still think that these rotary cars are simply the best sport cars(as far as you take care of them)
She needs a little work but am getting a 84 for my first car... just need a new caliper on the left side, my friend needs room so he is just giving it to me and he has had 3 or 4 Rx7 about and he said this is one of the strongest 12A's he has had... I cant wait to get it and am never going to let it go.
wow i really misss my 85 GSLSE 13B. . I sold it to my cousin, he took it to Florida. . he customized the motor and ran 12.8 seconds 1/4 mile with just a little work. . someone stole it and wrapped it around a pole. .
my car looks just like that!!! ^_^ this is great... if i'd been alive when they came out i totally would have had one... hell, i have an old ass one now and i still love it ^_^
@vivrantflo Most everyone I ever talked to got well over 100,000 miles on them, and several got over 150,000. The RX-7 12A was the most reliable rotary Mazda ever built. I used one to replace the worn out dual distributor 12A engine on my '73 RX-3 coupe. It was a common conversion and worked VERY well.
They were good cars of their time but the heating and ventilation system and models with aircon were quite stuffy;you couldn't heat the interior and demist and expect cool fresh fanboostable air from the facevents;it flowed warm, and even on air conditioned models when the temperature lever is set in the hot zone and the air con button is on the air still flows warm.
they much much more attractive than the modern day sports cars. Very clean lines and a simple straightforward interior. 0-50 in 6.3 seconds is not too shabby. Especially by 1983 standards.
i have an 83 gxlse its still in mint condition, i even use the original mazda oil filters, all regular maintenance is done and this thing never skips a beat, it purrs when it idles. collector car next year. yeah baby.
I recall reading in Car and Driver that Mazda had to hire rally driver Rod Millen to do the stunt driving for these ads because the stuntmen kept wrecking the cars. The first generation RX-7s were one of the best affordable sports cars ever.
yah rod millen also used a fb as a rally car and improvised a 4wd system in it. the fb's apparently has a tendancy to pitch the rear end out at high speed cornering
Yes, that's true. Rod Millen Motorsports made a VERY ported 300+HP 13B part-time 4WD early '80s RX-7 rally car. In the end, John Buffum's quattro was just too much and SCCA PRO Rallies were mostly won by John.

You should check out the Top Gear episodes about the rx8 vs. 350z.
