  • she is very impressive

  • Kakenya is very brave to have the courage and ideas to improve herself and her community. We need more women like her. You have not stopped you have taken the opportunity to educate your community the girls. You are one helluva woman. My website is on building women power.

  • WOW! What a perceptive little girl who looked out for the woman she is today!

  • I love the fact that in a male-oriented society, she found a way to use their rules to get what she wanted. It shows how smart she is...I also applaud the fact that she went back home to make a difference.

  • that was very nice!!!

  • ...because teachers looked nice. Teachers did not have to work on the farm.

THAT IS AN AWESOME REASON TO TEACH.

  • inspiring.. very nice.

  • I know that people have to be tested to be great. Patience is a virtue and with love and guidence anything is possible. Our greatest TEACHER----- GOD

  • Go ua amazing video

    inspiring

    D

  • GO GIRL!! U are an IDOL!!

  • @ciccolilli1 "...male circumcision has some good prophylactic medical consequences". Spoken like a true idiot. This is the very argument used also for female circumcision. Again very stupid people like you are missing the point. ANY attempted justification of ANY sort of mutilation is the first step of a slippery slope. ALL mutilation is bad. Try to play down male circumcision as 'Good' and female as bad is not only hypocritical but a sure fire way to keep these practices going.

  • what a great story

  • I love this story of a young girl following her dreams to become what she wanted to be and not just what people expected of her! Great, great story!

  • She did a great job very inspirational life :)

  • An African gender success story worth sharing. Thanks Vital Voices and bravo kakenya. Patience

  • Great story. Bravo Kakenya

  • i like the story

  • Such courage and strength. Very Motivating and Beautifully done.

  • Boomslang, ...I don't have time to waste on your remark. Women and Men are complimentary. It was created that way. To all the women in the world...Thank you for your compassion, understanding, intelligence and so much more. You make the world a better place.

  • @Frontier39

Of course you don't. All your evidence is anecdotal hearsay.

  • @DarkJafar

You are pathetic. Does mommy not love you enough? Wait I know, you are so pathetic every woman you've asked out has denied you (and for good reason); so now you feel you must take your angst out on the Internet. As we all know, the Internet is serious business; especially YouTube.

  • @DarkJafar Because I have no problem with men. Just little boys with mommy issues, like you.

  • YEAHHH! GO KAKENYA!!!

  • very inspiring. made me cry. sarah129

  • Nice animation and courageous lady. The conversations below reflect gender-bashing, which is completely counter-productive to such a great cause as this. By the way, the African Proverb is: it takes a village to raise a child. However, I have a better one stated in biblical truth: ...And God made them male and female, both created in His image. Both different, both blessed by God. Now, let's get along shall we? There's a lot more important matters at hand.

  • you go girl

  • I came to this video by accident and I am so glad I did. It was very touching.

  • Congratulations, Kakenya! May you receive many blessings as the girls of your school remain free to follow their dreams!

  • @DarkJafar

Do us all a fucking favor and please go live in Saudi Arabia. You seem to advocate misogyny. You'll fit right in.

  • That was awesome!

  • @boomslang86 You only further prove my point. Your level of maturity demands you resort to attacks on my sexual integrity and gender stereotype. I won't even begin to take apart your comment as a literal statement.

Furthermore, you're merely trolling this video to infuriate the women who see this and inspire camaraderie in your fellow sexists. Do yourself a favor and stop ruining the male image for those of us who aren't bigamist, uneducated bastards of a run-down society.

  • @malawoot

It is a literal statement. there IS estrogen in the water. Male babies are born every day with small penises and retracted testicles.

  • oh wow

    this is an amazing story.

  • Goosebumps

  • @daday268 Please keep in mind that such men are either still pubescent or are unrefined. Don't lump all of us in the same category, if you please.

  • That was the flippin' best cartoon ever!

    Story was pretty cool too:]

  • @JANELE71

That's what your "womyn" purport to do on a daily basis. All of a sudden I can't? Isn't that kinda sexist?

  • oh NO, this is WRONG... WOMEN DONT DESERVE TO DO TO SCHOOL

  • @daday268

I did. SHIT WAS SO CASH.

  • you guys wanna hear a funny joke?

    ...Womens rights

  • I want to help this woman. This is a God sent. Even if it is a dollar a day.

  • haahahhahahahhahah WOMENS RIGHTS LOLOLOLOLOL

  • @luckyhotdog2isback I'm watching this because its fake and gay duh?

  • @DarkJafar f*ck you you dam @s$whole

  • take a deep breath

    2. think of someone u like

    3. press F10 5 times

    4. send this to 5 coments

    5. look at ur backround......

  • so cool :3

  • totally kick ass. i thought this was going to be a downer but damn this was a good movie.i'm totally favin this.

  • aw made me smile =)

  • An old African proverb provides, "if you educate a boy, you educate an individual--if you educate a girl, you educate a community."

  • If you educate one you educate all... regardless of if they're a boy or girl.

  • @kilodegan1 While we praise this woman's foresight, I think it's also important to appreciate her community.

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • This women is inspiring.

However, are boys allowed to go to school in her tribe? Or are they forced to become a warrior like the women are mothers?

To build a school for only women....just doesn't seem right. Instead why not build a school for everyone?

  • @CabeBiken10 Indeed. To build a school just for girls and exclude boys only continues a rather immature gender war, but this time with a Western tint. Dumb, dumb, dumb.... and very shortsighted.

  • What an inspiring woman!

  • simply beautiful!

  • This is amazing!!

  • Good for her thats such a wonderful thing for her to stand up and try something different!

  • Wow, congratulations, someone in Africa did SOMETHING.

Why the hell should she be praised for doing something so simple.

She has no vital voice, she just became a teacher, wow, amazing, im sooo impressed.

Maybe they should make a video like this for every single kid that went to college and did something with their lives, oh wait, they won't, because everyone likes looking at Africa and telling them how good their doing like their a bunch of kids.

  • @SpaceMarine2007 She has made an impact on those children's lives whether or not you can see it, she pulled herself out of a hard place and made a local difference instead of being forced into a marriage. Who defines what "vital" voices in this world are? I can tell you that a sexist gamer on the internet certainly doesn't.

  • It gave me chills (in a good way!) What a miracle!

  • the ending soo ruined it for me!!! damn these ppl, all they do is criticise europe and spew distrust towards our ways but then when it comes down to things, she made her P.H.D in Europe/USA and beinglmost probably as 99.9% of all non westerners active in the postcolonial debate. but when she went back she made that school in a western tradition, even the fracking school uniforms, suit and tie? if she were such a great patriot why note colored robes and other traditional fabrics! LOL hypocrits

  • wow amazing!

  • That was amazing!

  • all power to you. wish you the best.wish you and your family the best in everythings. from Iran viua USA

  • @DarkJafar Well it seems you thought that through logically and not at all emotionally, didn't you? Ship us off onto an island... yes, I'm sure that would work. You're a man with antediluvian views that is too sexist to accept women being powerful equals with the potential to break man's self-proclaimed omnipotence over women.

  • @Breakingbenjamin42

Why arn't women in charge if their so importan- Oh wait, thats right, because your irrational and insane 1-3 days out of every month, you try to solve problems emotionally insted of logically, and your too weak to make hard choices that need to be made. Think im wrong? Well too bad, the rest of the world agrees with me, and no matter how much you don't like it, you can't do a damn thing about it but whine and complain.

  • @SpaceMarine2007 Wow,amazing, you choose to share all that hatred and fear of women with the whole world.

  • @SpaceMarine2007 I did not whine and complain. I simply stated what I know to be true. I'm neither irrational nor emotional, and you are incorrect when you label an entire gender. Does my female body identify me as being definitely incapable of making any sort of decision? Remember that "the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual."

  • @SpaceMarine2007 Then, watch a documentary on those "MEN" who ruled both before and following her rein. Now, I'm not going to be a domineering craphead like yourself and try to force my opinions on you. Instead, why don't you compare and contrast what you have seen. Now, little one, who made better CHOICES as a leader? Are the other two guys even remembered for much today besides fucking up? Oh yeah- and make sure your history (or "herstory") scources werent written by a biased, braindead

  • @prettypittyZ Try as you may, try as you might, in the end you know im right

  • @DarkJafar For someone who claims that men can think logically, you certainly are an illogical moron.

  • @DarkJafar DarkJafar your an ignorant asshole who should never be permitted to speak again, two things... this video was about a positive change that occurred in an African village what does it have to do with women being put into positions of power? and whats the difference, men have the exact same emotions women do we may not show them but that doesn't mean we don't act on them, having emotions is what makes us human in the first place, if we dont act on those emotions then what are we?

  • This lady is so inspiring, Beautiful presentation

  • I love this story, so inspiring and hopeful. :) Yet, I wonder what happens during the cerimony of womanhood that you are not supposed to cry for.

  • yeah this is cool

  • Wow, she is so inspiring. :)

  • srsly.. how do you dislike this vid?

  • @YellowBento You dislike this video because you are racist... That's about the only way in my opinion. :) No worries though, I love this video.

  • Thank you from the heart.

  • @DarkJafar yea, and men make it better by raging wars for petty things and go through life lead by testosterone filled brains

Im not saying all men are bad, but seriously get over your ignorant ideas because women werent made to serve men they were made to stand with them

  • What an amazing woman.

  • i agree wit da bottem comment this was touching and true pplz need to step up with there dreams me im alrdy workin on mine with my gf aswell i want to be a marine and to tht i need to be mentaly and physicaly tough and she wants to be in the airforce so she gonna go on to college while ill be in training by then :3

  • Awe inspiring!

  • stupid shit LOL

  • Well it is a good story. most things like this would touch me. But I don't mean to be negative at all, but this didn't touch me what so ever.

  • ); snif snif, so sadd:[

  • what an amazing woman XD

  • This is amazing. Thank you for being such a big inspiration. And thank you DVF for sharing this story and being so caring!

    Keep going! :D

  • Beautiful story :)

  • Nice

  • wow i loved her story it is so an insperation!

  • what is this

  • Wow!

  • Unfortunately these things happen, however wars are started by outside forces trying

to force change in other countries and customs. If you dont like what your govt. is doing, then change from within or get out.You do have options.I just dont believe that

outside forces shoud interfere with a countries sovereignty.

  • wow...inspirstional

  • This is very touching.

Her story makes me appreciate the education I have.

  • Aw, I'm usually not touched by things like these, but this one wore me down fast. :)

  • This is absolutely amazing. Raise your voice :)

  • Hip, Hip, Kakenya!! :D

  • This is amazing^^

Im so happy that you wanted to be a teacher and that u had a dream, you are a great example to women...And that woman can succeed nowadays :)

  • I love it. Congradulations and continue to live out your dreams.

  • thought it was kinda dumb always take place in africa

  • Comment removed

  • @amph99

have you ever been to Africa? especially East Africa..I have and believe me you wouldnt last 5 mins there ...then we would see who was kinda dumb.

Dont knock people who are trying to make things better for all

  • i'm proud of her...............!!!!

  • The documentary is very good , the original is in real life.

  • spurb......

  • Construction of Kakenya's school is not yet complete, although it has been in operation for about a year. Funding is needed to buy the 60+ girls mattresses and bedding in their makeshift dormitory and ultimately for building a proper dormitory. See Kakenya's site through the Vital Voices link and go to "My Journal" and then "News". Their makeshift dorm will be needed for classroom space in January when the next 4th-grade class enters the school. The safety of the girls is at stake.

  • cool

  • what a wonderful inspiration...

  • absolutely beautiful. I'm so so proud at this woman and one day I hope I can do something back for MY community in Iran :)

  • I am so happy for her. I'm glad that she got the support she needed from her community.

  • That was amazing :)

  • This is an excellent video. Now I feel motivated to go out and change the world. :p

  • Very inspiring...:)

  • i liked this video, but i don't get how the people complaining about others not liking it can simply infer they are self centered and ignorant. Maybe they just simply didn't like it or it wasn't what they were expecting to watch. stop trying to act so "touched" by a video then openly criticizing people you don't know.

  • This video is great. We need to look outside of ourselves to see that this world is changing. We all must raise our voices.

  • She is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! this story is so very inspiring.

  • AmaZing

  • i don't get how it says on top, that 16 people don't like this video. that is just being self fish and ignorant, D:< people should think more about what is actually happening outside this country and stop thinking about what they think is best for them, but seriously, don't come here and say you don't like the video, because that was inspirational :)

  • i don't think that what she did was that easy, but i can agree that she has a strong spirit......... i'm so touched by this video............

  • WOW,PRAISE GOD FOR THE WISDOM HE INSTALLED IN HER AND THE FREEDOM!

  • unbelievable. the force of this woman. respect!

  • Wow. Amazing. What a spirit, inspirational.

  • @SexyLikeThat1000 I disliked this.

  • This was a beautiful experience. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  • I guess the dichotomy of the 21st century is that cultures like this will increasingly be exposed to western ideas and values. The internet, compact electronics and all sorts of technological innovations are forcing many of these people to examine their own lives and realize that there is something way better out there. We need to encourage this and drag the veil off of oppressive and abusive practices throughout the world.

  • Uh oh, I wonder if the "ceremony" when she was 13 was female circumcision. :|

  • @frifri99 In most communities I have learned about, female circumsicion occurs when the girl is as young as 6 or 7.

  • @frifri99 Yes, it was FGM.

  • Just love it

  • such an inspiring story! Kekenya i amazing :D

  • so 2 all parents don't force the kids to get married n young age ... right

  • @Zegane I think there would be less troubles without people like you

  • goooooooooood

  • beauuuuuuutiful woman

  • this moved me...sooo powerful...what a woman

  • This video was amazing and shows anyone can do anything with willpower.

  • this was soooooo beautiful

  • Very moving and thought-provoking

  • that was amazing, what kind of spirit she has to love her community that much.

  • Beautiful :)

  • Great story, I love the graphics, congratulations!!

  • Very nice video.

    Like It.

  • I totally cried.

  • This is the reality of the culture...we can only bring changes through empowering women through education and becoming self sufficient. The world is full of injustices but one small step at a time....sheida jaffer

  • she was engaged to get married at age 5 wth im 15 truning 16 and im engaged and every is giving me shit that me and my guy are making a mist tack in getting married and being engaged at this age but yet this girl was engaged at age 5 wtf

  • @SuperIzzo881 she was forced to be married you have choice. you are still growing and will go through big changes. You should focus in school and try to go to college your not fully grown. If by the time you have graduated college you are still in love then marry but dont marry and find you have changed and are not in love anymore. you are a teen.

  • i cried D= its so touching

  • how on earth did you cry?

  • Such an inspirational video is sound proof that our strength is driven by our dreams, inspirations, and ambitions. No matter where we are, no matter what conditions of oppression we may be facing, our TRUE strength is within. Once we've come to realize this, NO ONE can ever impede us from reaching our vision.

  • Heathen531 - you cannot compare circumcision, removal of foreskin, to the horror of female genital mutilation. The clitoris removed greatly lessening the chance of orgasm; she may be sewn up creating a small openin for urine and menstrual fluid. To deliver a baby, she must be reopened then closed again following birth. Analogous for men would be removal of penis and new opening for urination and no orgasms.
