  • Sootch the 40 call at my local guns shop only says smith and Wesson on the grips. No literature on the slide, or frame except some numbers on the frame. I have owned a lot of Smith and Wesson pistols and never seen one like that.

  • I just purchased a 5906. Great vid.

  • I watched this video because a friend of mine wants to sell me his, great video thank you, very informative.

  • i love my 5906. perfect. nice video. only one mistake that i can find...you should ALWAYS probe the chamber with your finger to insure it is truely unloaded.

  • I like my 469 better, I like the combat sights on mine, sweet shooting gun will digest any ammunition I can feed it.

  • Is the firing-pin removable?

  • I picked up a 39-2 a few weeks ago and I took it to the range and its a fantastic shooter, trigger was crisp, accuracy was as good as anything I own and its old school which I always prefer ...and it was under 400 bucks....Compared my my ole M&P,id take one of these at the range anyday,a little heavy for CCW or IWB - 5906s are all over the web cheap ,I may have to pick one up to add to the heard.......Thanks Sootch

  • I have owned this gun for several years now, only shot if a few times, but carry it fully loaded all the time, travels with me, where ever I go.

Till this video, I have not been able to get the weapon apart to clean and lub it.

Thanks so much, I could not get the pin out till tonight, Just did not push in it hard enough.

Now I can take care of it properly

  • I'm missing the right safety lever. Does anyone know if parts for these pistols are available?

  • Amazing video sir, i own the same one, my father passed it on to me and i love it. thanks for the review..

  • Really great review I own a 5906 and love it.

Bought it new and after all these years looks like it just came out of the box.

Shoots great, I'm just not into plastic pistols they just don't do it for me.

    Thanks for your reviews.

    Phil in Canada

  • Is yours a certain model? I'm looking at a website that has some in stock and the photo shows the round trigger guard model, but no side protectors on the rear sight and the hammer is is stainless and not grooved.

  • @Rangerscott69 it's the very last batch of the 5906's made, the one you describe is still a 3rd generation just an earlier 3rd gen and the side protectors on rear sight are the optional adjustable rear sight. most common are the standard non adjustable rears like you have been seeing online. either one is a great gun, as are the 4506 .45's

  • @peterpetree Thanks for the reply. I put in an order for the model I've been seeing. Still waiting on them to ship it. I hope it hasn't been abused.

  • Another great video sootch00 - I have had the 469 for over 20 years now and cannot find a better weapon to replace it with (not that I would mind you). The 915 version is being sold on Gun Broker for a shade over 2 bills- what a bargain pistol. Made in the good old USA too.

As you say "long live the Republic"

  • I really loved the 5906, 4566, and 4506 models. But after the M&P series came out I switched mostly for the magazine capacity. As far as comfort, concealment, and functionality either series is still an excellent choice.

  • Love it, but not legal in CA....

  • The only thing I hate about your vids is you make me want to buy another gun lol

  • OH and I carry mine concealed IWB holster, no sweat

  • @ozark1951 on your waist?

  • I have the 5904 and I love mine. I have had it since 89. Works great and never a bobble.

  • i love guns

  • he was the first police officer killed in georgia in ten years before that, before he carried the 9mm he carried a ruger security six .357 mag/.38 special. I have both guns and love then both neither one had failed on me yet.

  • I love ffee 5906 i've got, it was the last pistol my grandfather carried when he was a police he was caring it when he was shot and killed. on august 12, 1990 james emory was pulled over for speeding by my grandpa, he walked up to the window of the car unknowing that empty had preexisting charges, and before my grandpa could say can I see your license and registration he was shot in the face by emory, emory used a .38 . and my papa was taken to the hospital an pronounced doa (dead on arrival)

  • Damn near every video I've seen reviewing this gun says it isn't a good gun to conceal. I admit, it's a little big, sticks out sometimes and I occasionally catch shit from cops for it. But to hell with it, it fits my hands well,I shoot well with it, and it's what I carry on a daily basis.

  • I just found out about this gun. Just added it to my "want!" list

  • Don that pistol was used by the Puerto Rico police dep for many years! They were replaced by the S&W M&P 40. Nice review my friend!! Take care God bless!!

  • where can i get that hogue grip?

  • Comment removed

  • it depends on the grainage that ur using when u zeroed ur sight in if u went from 115 to 146 they tend to pull up and to the left i have one too i hit dead center at 35- 55 yards

  • lol how can u release the clip in time for him to completly take the gun from u?????? made completly no sense ,,,,,,

  • Cool i just got the 6906 awesome pistol..

  • @sootch00 my first gun was a 4516. its pretty much the same gun, just in 45 acp. i carried that badboy in a desantis thumb break scabbard for ten months. i loved it. im gonna sell it now though and put the money toward a taurus model 44

  • @lithjimmy Don't do it! Replace a perfectly good Smitty for a Taurus? That's like trading in a Lincoln Navigaor for a KIA Sorrento.

  • I love this gun, even though it is a bit outdated. This was my father's first duty pistol when MDPD switched from revolvers. My favorite part is the collection of "high capacity" magazines that I use with the "Law Enforcement Only" stamped on the side. I'm glad that crap is gone.

  • Great video and choice of weapon. The 5906 was the very 1st pistol I carried as a police officer, I bought it at Magnum Force in Pompano Beach, Fla. Where most of us made our gun purchases. The 5906 served me well in my career. I was under the impression that the gun could not be fired w/out its magazine. Later, I attended a tactical weapons class taught by John Pride (LAPD)......-->

  • Before you release the mag and place a little bit of pressure on the trigger and then drop the mag. When you pull the trigger, the pistol still can fire. S&W was aware of this and I’m not sure if they ever addressed it. Also, many Pompano Beach officers carried the Walther PPK/S as back up and Magnum always had a waiting list whenever they were shipped in. Stay Safe!

  • hey i love a quality review who knows what they're talking about, as far as production strike, protocols, valuable information. thank you! will subscribe.

  • As always, an excellent review from a great shot, and a responsible and knowledgeable gun owner. Keep it up!

  • screw the m&p line. we already have glocks and xds i just want them to make these again

  • @wootfortoot Amen

  • is the grip on this thicker then the 4006?

  • I've been looking for a good quality steal hund gun(I'm sick of polymers)... It's down to this one and the berretta 96. Other than ammo disputes(.40 vs 9mm) any suggestions on which one I should go with here?

  • Love it I am looking for the 5946 (DAO) these are hard to find!

  • Used by "Mr.White,Mr.Blonde,Mr.Blue,Mr.Brown,Mr.Orange&Mr.Pink", in the movie..."Reservior Dogs"(1992)

  • Can u you do a review of an Glock 19 or recommend one that's good.

  • I have one of these and a 1911 .45, the 9 is heavier but I have grown to like it. My .45 isnt stainless so the 9 comes in handy in the rain or dampness.

  • heavy out of date, and still somehow the current service pistol of the RCMP, they need to invest in new Glocks or Springfields

  • why did you drop the hammer by hand at 2:36 instead of using the hammer drop? that's a really bad and dangerous habit.

  • @ms3bani The gun was unloaded. Yes, it's probably better to use the decocker when dealing with live rounds. My CZ 75 has no decocker, so I have to manually drop the hammer. It's really not a big deal if you know what you're doing.

  • The 5906 sucks. It was my police service pistol for many years. HEAVY, clunky, and a LOOOOONG mushy trigger pull.

  • Only real gun I ever fired. Wish I could own one but I live in Western Europe.

  • hey what the name of that sights

  • @vinblack242 tritium night sights. love mine. i have the tactical version. it's my fave pistol

  • i have an old model 59

  • This looks almost exactly like my 39-2.

  • @PAhuntandgame The model 39-2 is almost the granddaddy of them all as far as S&W autos go. The original was the Model 39, some improvements came, then the 39-2, then they took the 39 concept, combined a double stack mag, the model 59, and the rest is history.

  • this gun looks great, are there any remakes or reproductions?

  • @24Rorschach no but there are alot of police trade-ins available. check gunbroker. mine was only $325 from budsgunshop

  • Excellent handgun, my first duty weapon

  • Very nice weapons, a shame they discontinued them and ran shitty Sigma's before the M&P introduction.

  • dude how many guns and knives do you actually have?

  • how much would one of these set me back? australian?

  • Is a hammerdrop/decocker the same thing?

  • @patruick94 Ignorant of what ? I believe you sir are the Ignorant one in this instance.

Please explain how forcing the US to pay smaller developing country's carbon taxes help the planet.

the Global warming theory is based on flaud science and there really isnt anyway around it.. Thats why when asked to proved proof, the global warming fanatics will deflect the question with insults and "save the polar bear for the children" crap. its a power grab and a way to cripple the US.

    prove me wrong.

  • arent all pistols semi automatic? no?

  • @coldironhands1 Generally yes. However there are also fully automatic pistols, bolt action pistols and single shot pistols (like the old flintlock or percussion black powder pistols, but also modern competition handguns). And some guys use the word pistol for any handgun, including revolvers. Obviously revolvers are not semi auto either. That's just terminology.

  • @LongRangeRifle Ah, I see. Thanks.

  • Night sights? They appear to be?

  • i got the previous generation, the 915, about the same, but the decocker is just for righties and not ambidexterous, picked up some flush fit 17 round ram mags for it.

  • home defense

  • patruith101~ Global wamring is a fraud.. they have fudged numbers in their favor and when some of the scientists were caught they all went into hiding untill it blows over..havnt heard much from old Al gore have you ? the who science behind it is basid on flaud theory that tree ring samples are an accurate meter for temprature and ignoring evidence that goes against their theory such as the mid-evil warming trend that would have made the hockey stick chart not so hockey stickish. research it

  • @patruick94 Then you might as well not support land, women, money, oil, or anything else people fight and die for...

  • Love the Hickok45 reference.

  • THANKYOU!

for mentioning that its not good to slam the slide on an empty chamber!

thats one of my super pet peaves.....

  • Best outtake yet on this video!

  • bad trigger finger :/

  • that enormous rear sight is so ugly.

  • I agree, one great pistol. It's one of the best pistols that S&W ever made.

  • Damn U look like jems Bond !!

  • I wish Smith and Wesson would make those again because I like steel frame guns. But I find one at a pawn shop I will get it before someone eles gets it.

  • great review! i love S&W.... been with the family for 3 generations.

  • Shooting with dark glasses are you smoking the good stuff

  • did i see a silly "low capacity" mag?I am SOOOO glad that gun law is gone.

  • Great video Sootch, its nice to see a video on a classic S&W auto. I myself have a a Model 39-2 and a Model 1006. Both of the guns are excellent pistols and rock solid.

  • What a great gun! I REALLY want one of these and a 4506. Smith and Wesson needs to start making them again.

  • Great video Don. I have the compact aluminum frame version 469. Cannot find a better shooter!

Sweet guns. We also have the excellent model 410.

    GBA/LLtR

  • is a very nice gun

  • S/W came out with some nice steel frame pistols in the 90"s . steel frame pistols are the best for me.that was funny your holding a 9mm and the phone rings and it startled you.lol take care keep the vids comming.

  • Classic!

  • Nice sights no doubt. There's something to be said about a gun that can be used to knock someone out. I bet if you struck someone with that pistol it would do real damage to their head.

  • Awesome, Your the man. Music is relaxing like a siren too.. Could you tell us what its called? I wish the rest would copy your protocol, Short and sweet and to the point. And yes ,some people hate it, kind of like the way they hated #16 and don't have a clue what I'm saying.

  • i love those guns, i have a 4506 model that i am trying to get rid of to buy the compact model, still love the gun. i like polymer frame pistols alot but those all steel guns just feel so good shooting. great vid sootch

  • Nice video and nice pistol. Reminds me of those 90ies TV police series. Good stuff.

  • A true "All American" pistol.Jumping on the "wonder-nine"(as in 9mmx19)bandwagon at the beginning of the nineteen-nineties.

Today in the last 10-11 years, manufacture handgun designs has been polymer framed and double-action only type striker fire(like a Glock)with no exposed hammer("Ruger SR9","Springfield XD","S&W M&P","Khar",& a UAE made "Caracal" 9mm that looks alittle like the "Steyr M9").

  • I like the look of this gun.

Put some wood grips on it,and you got a nice retro hipster gun

  • I still have my S&W 4006 I bought in '91, the same basic designe as the 5906, except chambered in .40 cal. The early models just had solid hammers, not the milled out lighter hammer. Thanks for posting keep up the good work and keep sharing the knowledge!!!

  • @tacticalfairy I cycle the slide manually because that's the way I was trained for LE.

  • That is sweet, I have the same model in 10MM .

    Thanks for showing.

    racerx32.

  • Sweet...one of only a few all steel semi auto's that i like...i prefer the smaller version 6906 though...2 thumps up Don...

  • this is also the gun from the movie reservoir dogs! great video sootch00!

  • Sootch,

what is the realationship between this gun and the 6906 model? I have a review of the 6906, and for the most part they seem to be about the same, other than the color! any info you can pass on would be appreciated!

  • Reminds of the guns all the guys used in Reservoir dogs.

  • nice groups at 15 yards!

  • @drzmanproject Makes a difference when you're not doing a run-n-gun! Lol! Thanks Brother!

  • Nicely done Sootch. The videography was perfect. The gun was perfectly illuminated and the video clearly showed the quality of Smith & Wesson workmanship. Keep up the great work. Now I want one to.

  • Great looking gun. It reminds me of the kind of pistol you saw in movies when the "Wonder-Nines" were breaking out. There's something very attractive about an all-steel pistol for me. It even sounds great when you're working the action and breaking it down. Thanks Sootch, take care my brother.

  • this is a very underrated gun.....love it

  • this gun looks like S&W just put a m9 and a 1911 together.

  • I had this exact gun. It was a pleasure to shoot. I did like the gun a lot, as a plinker and a cheap gun to shoot. It got away from me because I decided 9mm was not enough bullet for me for self defense. I now own a S&W 686 in .357 Mag, a Glock 22 in .40S&W and a Colt Enhanced Government S/S model in .45ACP, any of which I would feel well armed in a self defense situation with premium bullets.

  • thoes two levers when u put the slide bak up .. wat did they do .. sry im a nube when it comes to pistols

  • @darthbilly97 That is an ambidextrous safety/decocking lever. flip down decocks hammer and puts the gun in safe mode.

  • Gorgeous pistol!

  • Sootch's latest reviews of the Blackhawk, the M-1 and now a classic S&W 5906 are fantastic entertainment.

  • The trigger system has always been the Achilles of the third gen smiths. Even so that is a fine weapon. Would love to pick on up one day.

  • @Sanjuro82 why do you say that?

  • There still is a lot of those in service for the nypd

  • Wow, that's a gorgeous piece! May have to pick one up if I ever come across one! +5 for the hickock45 reference! Love BOTH of your guys' videos! LOL at the ending...I hate when my cell phone scares me, too...

  • Great video, the ending gave me a good laugh!

  • cool gun, great review. seems like the 9mm is your favorite pistol caliber.

  • Wow that is a sexy piece of craftsmanship!

How do you get all the sexy pieces of engineering Sootch?

  • You have no idea the smile this video has put on my face, Sootch. I'm so glad a credible reviewer on YouTube got around to doing a video on one so people could get a good look at it. The 5906 is a very underrated pistol, and I was once a proud owner of a 1992 made model with stainless trigger and hammer, and with Novak sights. It was my first 9mm pistol, and I miss it dearly. I hope to replace it someday. I really thank you for posting this video, it brought me back. :)

  • @Yournamehere945 I know eh man? I love how Sootch does reviews of classics not just the latest and greatest! Sootch's videos are like looking back in time at what reviewers would have said when the gun was first produced!

  • Nice pistol!

  • I also love my S&W 5906. They are a smooth shooting gun and I have never had a problem. I also have a S&W 459 that I do carry every day. I like the black of the 459 becouse if my jacket moves up the black of the 459 is a little less noticeable than the stainless 5906. The 459 and 5906 are identical and most parts are interchangable. including the mags. Thanks foe the great vids.

    PatersSatyrs

  • nice video man i was the 100th person to like it. do you have a bolt action shotgun

  • LOVED YOUR REFERENCES TO HICKOK! AWSOME GUN TOO! A true piece of art and luxury.

  • Nice job I miss the model 39

  • i love my 5906

  • Sootch, Great video! This was the first handgun I purchased the day I turned 21, many years ago in 1989. It was my 21st birthday present to myself. I am an active & competitive shooter, and my 5906 has had approx. 75,000 rounds run through it. I also have a 4006 that has about 40,000 rounds through it. Both still work flawlessly and have never had to replace any of the original parts. Still as accurate today as they were when new.

  • Excellent vid sootch. I love my 5906, it was my dads duty gun and my primary home defense weapon. Probably my favorite handgun I own, I trust it with my life. Also you can get 17rd mags from ram line :) . Keep the vids rolling sootch.

  • good video don keep up the good work also you should get one of the new smith&wesson sd 40 those look like cool guns

  • Funny how people think different about certain guns. I shot this as a 2nd gen gun and really disliked it. Also - believe it or not - the hammer drop (right side) just broke off. Probably a fluke, but it did influence my opinion. Anyway: I bought a H&K P30L and never regret it.

  • Have you ever done a video on ak-47 style rifles and the different manufacturers. If not is this a subject you would consider doing in the future?

Your videos are still great. Keepem coming.

    Bob

  • I wish S&W still made these instead of the M&P series...

  • beautiful design but how's the reliability?

Any jams? Or anything you can mention?

  • If you hav'nt already.. you should try the 6906..the little brother to the 5906.the 6906 was carried by many detectives and is a little more concealable, great review brother..keep up the good work-MoJo

  • I love these style guns! I've got a 3914, which is pretty much the single stack compact version of this gun, and it's got a trigger like butter (But I think it's been worked on). If you can't afford a New glock of sig or berretta or M&P or whatever, go to a gun show and grab one of these.

  • what a beautiful gun!

  • I just shot my S&W 1006 the other day the big bother to this gun. Great guns...it seems they never got the credit they deserved. Great Video!

  • Great video (as always:D)

  • looks like nice gun.is there replacement for or newer smith and wesson or all

    are glocks at police force,

thank you for small bloopers i love those

  • Good review,Thanks for your time.

  • I have the 4586, weighs a ton, great gun!!

  • Hey Sootch

What is your thoughts for a leftie.

I'm looking hard at the CZ85, cause theres not a lot of options for us southpaws.

  • A beauty of a gun Don, reminds me of the S&W 910!

  • I carried the 5946.

HEAVY but a great shooting pistol.

  • Love when you show out of production pistols. Brings back good memories

  • wonderful gun... only the magazine disconnect lets it down. :)

  • what is the expected retail of this gun? Sorry if I missed it in the video.

  • @safenders I've seen them around the $350-400 range.

  • @sootch00

$400 new or used? If that price is for a new gun then it might be the greatest buy of the century.

  • @safenders

it depends where you are. The ones around where I live are around 450-500$

  • Comment removed

  • you just made me nostalgic for mine... i sold it last year :( first gun i ever bought .

  • love the 5906...great vid

  • Reminds me a lot of one of the pistols Don Johnson used in Miami Vice. I know he used a Bren 10 at some point in the show but I believe he used a S&W .45 as well. I wonder if it was the earlier version of that same line? Those old school steel framed semi-auto's are pretty cool. I wonder how the recoil on that compares to a glock since it would seem the extra weight might absorb it better.

  • @friskyrabbit I think Crocket used a S&W4506 (.45) for at least one season.

  • Thanks Sootch I love those S&W..

  • Smith and Wesson autos are so cool. Shot a 39 and was so impressed by its super short trigger reset. Such a cool series of guns.

  • @sootch00 When you say "self-defense" do you mean for home defense? It looks large for concealed carry, but I know some people like that. Glad to hear you're a hickok fan too haha!

  • that is my fatherinlaws ccw gun. he does not mind the weight.

  • @crash44tatic nobody should mind the weight

a full size pistol is way better then a small peashooter

  • That reminds me of my CS9 pistol by S&M, although the CS9 has the aluminum alloy frame & stainless steel slide. Nice review!

  • This handgun is seen being used by Tom Cruise at the end of the movie Collateral.

  • my favorite hand gun

  • NOOOO, I've been looking to get one for a while, now they will be hard to find! haha thanks sootch, j/k

  • nice pistol
