@gazizzerbumph We tried imparting everything he knows about this Fenix through mental telepathy, but you never seemed to notice so we had to resort to actual talking.. . -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
@gazizzerbumph You will find Nutn has the most through reviews on the tube...that takes time. Besides that, most of us "TNPers" enjoy the personal experiences, philosophies and opinions...I know I do. I KNOW that if Nutn says it’s ok...it’s ok and if it’s not then it’s a lemon.
Advantage NiteCore D10 (especially D10 SP R2 version which is still available from a Hong Kong supplier) in knurling, size, beam and most importantly the electronic safety lockout function which prevents accidental activation. Also it has detachable clip and three stage output - 2 lumens, 35 lumens and 145 lumens instead of the ramping mode on the previous D10 models.
But still Fenix are very good lights especially LD20 and LD10
I didn't see a specific review on the Fenix LD10, but I've had mine for 6 months now. I needed a reliable light, powerful, with a common battery. I made a 2 week trip to Europe with it and the Excellent Streamlight Stylus Pro (also reviewed) as my backup. The Fenix was a great combination along with my Spyderco Endura 4 was a great combination! 4 countries, one AA...awesome. I use it daily.
I've been using a SureFire E2e incandescant for over 4 years, but it would go dead with no warning....
I just got their LD10 the other day, and I must say I'm loving it. The only other real light I have is the Inova X5, and the LD10 blows it out of the water. The switch & 6 modes also blow the X5 away. I like the anti-rolling surfaces (a subtle but very functional improvement). The pocket clip is IMO the best for EDC.
I like the vast availability & good variety of battery chemistries for the AA as well. No more expensive cr123s for me.
Still works great in the fenix headband, by the way.
It's a beauty OK. I have the L1D that came before it...similar kind of thing. I know what you mean about AA batteries. You can literally walk into *any* general store in_the_world and come out with a pack of AA batteries. It just makes sense. I looked at all the CR123 lights and the voice of reason in my head told me to get a light that uses AA. I recommend you buy low drain type Eneloop or GP Recyko bats...not as much capacity as 2700's, but more reliable (and carry spares).
@GhibliFan1 It's getting hard to find eneloops locally, for some reason. I ended up going with the Duracell pre-charged batteries with the white tops, which are thought by many to be re-branded eneloops. I think they only have the 2000 mAh capacity, but that's good enough for me. I carry an energizer ultimate lithium primary cell as my backup.
I worry about fakes with Eneloop, these days, to be honest. They suffer a big counterfeiting issue apparently, with even high street stores copping for them on occasion. GP Recyko are just as efficient and in some tests even better, but are counterfeited a lot less. I still have my original Eneloops from when they were new...must have had 300 or so charges each and they're going fine. I can't believe people still buy disposable batteries...it is the last great hoodwink/swindle.

As an alternative, Fenix L0D Q4 75 lumens on single AAA battery. Perfect for keychain, a flashlight you can always have with you. Makes the L1D look enormous in comparison.
Has all the same features as the bigger fenix lights - low mid high turbo, flash and SOS.
You always have awesome reviews nutn, i think IPX-8 is 3 feet for 30 min but 12 feet for 24 would be way cooler :) in real life if you drop your flashlight in water deeper than 3 feet you probably wont ever find it so it doesn't matter 3 feet or 50
Left mine by accident in my pant side pocket, and my wife put it through the washer and drier cycle ...... I yelled a bit and got pissed off, but It Still works like a charm ! ..... I forgave her by the way ...... ;)
Hey Nutn - thanks for this fantastic review - due to your review I bought an LD10 and i could not be more pleased with it! Keep up the great work you do.
Picked up a LD10 because of your review. I am amazed with the quality and the amount of light this thing puts out. Thanks for all the great reviews, every time I get some internet time I find myself watching your videos. Two thumbs up!
I recently had the LD10 with me on exercise and used it with an Ortec headband for hands-free lighting. I'm very happy with how this combo works, especially since the band can be folded completely flat and fit in any pocket of my BDU pants.
You got something wrong..The Fenix lights will NOT drain the battery when not in use, the nitecore D10 will, because it remembers which level was last used.
It's really nice review. I bought today my Fenix L1D. I'm interested in the Nitecore D10 too, seems very practical and smart, as power signals from the button on and off.
Another great review. However, there was no mention of a warranty.
I have a Surefire L2 that is an amazing flashlight, though it did cost somewhere around $170. My only gripe is that it seems like the batteries that came with it were stronger and lasted longer than the box of batteries that Surefire sells.
Love Fenix flashlights. Amazing bang for your buck. I have an LD10 for my EDC light and am lookin at the TK11 for a tac light for my new Remington 870. Thanks Nutn for sellin me on that one.
@xwarmouthx : I used TK11, Olight M20, SF G2, as weapon lights for my 870 too. Good field use, especially during our checkpoints and night patrols. Hope this helps :)
have you noticed that when the light is in normal mode, the flashlight gives off a faint hiss or buzzing sound when it is emitting light (min, normal, and max output - and also at every time its on on SOS) in turbo mode there is no sound, i am using a sanyo eneloop.
Nutn, where are you finding these Fenix torches with desert color? I've only succeeded in finding them in black but would like something a little different. Thanks in advance.
I thought the same thing, cause I really like the tan color. I think the one he shows in this video is actually OD green, which I have seen on a few websites.
just ordered up two LD10's. Family is having a $50 gift exchange and I couldn't chance not winning my own gift so had to order 2 just in case. Thanks for the vids nutn always looking forward to new ones.
You covered every aspect of this flashlight I can think of, and some I didn't. Way to go Nutnfancy. You continue to crank out the most thorough, thoughtful, and entertaining review videos on Youtube. I have both the LD20 and LD10, thanks in large part to you. Keep up the great work!
@kentpublic yes he did...i just got the ld10 today..and will be getting the ld20 in a while...cant wait to go night fishing in the lakes and camping..see how they work out...
Thanks Nutn. Great review. I just pulled the trigger on the new ld 10. Gonna be my new edc. Been edc-ing a surefire c-2 centurion for the last 2-3 years. great light, but a little bulky, low burn times, and the cost of cr-123 batts are all driving me to try something else. Thanks again!!
I just picked one up. perfect light when I travel since my camera uses AA batteries. Good advice on the lithium batteries. the strobe feature is perfect when a ride my bicycle. Dam!, now I need another one for the back of my bike...keep up with the videos.
You ever thought of buying some 14500 li-ion AA sized batteries? They're about 5 bucks for a 2 pack at dealextreme. Your output will go from 120 on turbo to over 200 lumen out the front and you can still recharge them around 1000 times a piece.
Great light, but the only problem is that it rolls when you lay it flat, an issue that is solved in the LD10 which is a slightly better light. I have the LD1 and the L2D (2xAA batteries and brighter), but in 95% of the time I always pick the smaller LD1, it's just a wonderful light.
Folks, if you are a Costco member call around to your local Costco stores and see if they have item #831076. This is a Leatherman pack which includes a "Blast" multi-tool and a Leatherman LGX200 (WHICH IS A REBRANDED FENIX L1D v 2.0). They were originally $59 or so, but Costco is discontinuing them and I just bought a dozen for $29.97 each and I'm giving them as company gifts for Christmas. This pack is worth about $95. More info on candle power forums...
Just got the fenix L1D with the white diffuser wand and it is simply awesome! It's amazing that a single AA battery can throw a beam of light like this. Sturdy design and all around "coolness" factor make it fun to own. Thanks to Nutn for turning me onto this great flashlight.
Got one on order with head band and diffuser. You mentioned the heads being swappable... I found that Fenix will sell you just the bodies and tail caps for lights to convert your L1D to a L2D or even to a P2D or any combination that share a bezel diameter at a less that half the cost of a new light... how cool is that!
You cannot really swap the heads, because they're not designed to receive the same voltage input. The L2D work with 2xAA cells, give 1.5v x 2 = 3v input, while the L1D work with only 1xAA = 1.5v input. If you put the L2D head on L1D body, the light will stay all time on the lowest level, no matter the setting you choose. On the other side, if you put the L1D head on the L2D, it's the exact opposite, all time on the highest level. I tell you that because I've both these flaslights and I tried
I got one of these a while back and I love it. The only thing it lacks is a very low light setting but I use my keychain light for that. Thanks nutnfancy for your awesome reviews.
i just love this color!! but those lights are too expensive for me right now. plus i just dont need such strong light, my small keyring LED light is enough for me now.
most of us that watch your videos for actual reviews don't tune out, that is when we are learning what we came here for.if a light is super bright but only lasts 30 seconds and melts the housing what good is it.THANKS FOR YOUR TIME!!
I have the TK10 (2 of them), and the PD20 and P1D Q5.
Ok, so I have read some other boards which state some issues with Fenix lights. I had one upon receipt of the PD20. I had to take the light apart and clean it for it to work. I almost sent it back, but on a last ditch attempt to qualify the non-funtion, I took the tail cap unit apart and messed with the switch....most consumers would have sent the light back for sure...but its fixed now. Just a caveat for buyers of Fenix.
Great video and great flashlight. I've had my Fenix L1D Q5 for about a year now with no issues. I use Sanyo Eneloops in mine because they get longer run times compared to standard Alkaline AA's and are rechargeable. Fenix flashlights are some of the best around for the price.
Another gread video. I have a Fenix PD20 which runs on one 123. Great lights. I also own a few Surefires. The Surefires seem more robust, but cost at least 2x as much as the Fenix. Never had any problems with either.
I don't understand why so many guys are rude. Keep up the great work.
@kabafan101 One can, but I wouldn't operate it on high or turbo. Alkalines just can not sustain that kind of power output, and the harder you draw from an alkaline the more likely it will leak.
what's your opinion of batteries: rechargeables are available but do they reliably work? fenix offers them for sale-anyone checked/ tested these out ?
just got my Fenix TK10 based off of your reviews on the Fenix brand torches. Everything you stated is dead on correct. Lots of flashlight for the money, I would even say exact same light discharge as my $400 Surefire. Great honest reviews you have. Trust me guys...Nutnfancy knows what he's talking about.
thanks for this review went ahead and ordered this for myself. I needed a good small flashlight for over here in the desert and it just so happens you reviewed exactly the type of light i was looking for.
Turbo mode 90 and general mode 9/40/80 lumens. Battery consumption with minimum 25hr and max 1,5hrs. Price around 50$. I have P3D and very happy with that.
Nice review. I have the L1T V2.0 for EDC Same size and overall design as the L1D but the tailcap is momentary/click and it only goes between 98 and 16 lumens. The only thing I don't like about it is the lack of an anti-roll device. Aside from that I love it.
I've been using the Nitecore D10 as my EDC light and have not had any problems working the functions of the light, very simple. Once again another good review nutnfancy!
I like the gerber infinity with 100 hour run time. 1 AA battery, but not as fancy. I got mine for 9 dollars though. My standard survival kit flashlight. Usually I bring a high output flashlight along and a headlamp too. But that little gerber is always with me.
Umm, I have the trail hawk and I like it. Out of the box it was dull, had to take bastard file out and bring the edge back. It chops pretty good now. I like the hammer poll. One time a tree fell on my neighbors house and I attacked it with just my trail hawk it did the job. The handles are straight so you can throw it but for a chopper you might want a lanyard so your hand doesn't slip off. JIC
A caveat with rechargeable Li-ion batteries is that they are dangerous if used incorrectly. Go to google and search batteryuniversity and read up about Li-ion safety and gather some knowledge before you decide to use rechargeable Li-ions. Most of the time brand less batteries are not of quality and are very dangerous. Stick to US and Japan made cells. BTW Great review.
Because its chinese doesnt mean it should cost less. For the quality you are getting it is a steal at around $50. Compared to Surefire, the build quality is on par.
lower production costs should create a lower retail price in a competitive market. if you think something that costs a few dollars to make is a steal at $50, i can't help you.
Raw material costs of a Fenix are about the same as a Surefire. But the min wage in China is lower than that of the US. Therefore Fenix does cost less than Surefire.
Surefire and Fenix market to different consumers so Fenix is better at general use and Surefire is usually better at others. Surefires are also pretty expensive compared to Fenix. Not all components of Surefire is made in US.
A 225 lumen light from fenix costs around $60-70, a surefire light with similar output and shorter run time costs $300-400. How is that a 25% difference? Don't lecture us about economics when you don't know basic math.
hey nutnfancy.. have you ever thought about using rechargeable lithium batteries? check them out by some chinese makers like superfire and stuff. You can get them with the chargers for like 20 bucks. The batteries have built in microchips to regulate the current for polarity protection.
I think in terms of bang for buck/size, my P1D CE takes the cake. takes 1 CR123 battery and has 180 lumens on turbo. By the way, I think the new TK11 Rev.2 is coming out later this month and it now has 240 lumens in turbo mode. Crazy.
Yeah I have the P1D CE too, it's my current EDC key chain light. And speaking of 2xCR123 lights, I have the Olight M20 warrior. On paper it puts out 250 lumens for 4.5 hours. Seems to best fenix's tactical series, although I don't own any of fenix's TK lights so I can't speak from experience, only from what their websites say. BTW I also ordered a solarforce L2B, it's a cheap Surefire 6P clone (I'm talking $29 here!) that claims to put out 300 lumens. I'll get back to you on how that turns out.
I feel honoured watching a nutnfancy video with 0 views, don't give me thumbs down for that, I mean it :p Like all of your reviews, you review into great detail.
I'm big into flashlights, and I like what you're doing, but darnnnnn... A minute and a half should be more than enough to extol the virtues of one of these. I'd be a fan if you could please make these a bit more concise. Thanks.

Speaking of lithium primary cells, have you 'upgraded' to the 3 volt primary AA cell; crAA 14505?
The use of that cell increase the output of turbo mode, and increases operating efficiency of lower modes.
and it is cheaper than the Energizer Ultimate L91 (at batteryjunction)

You ever thought of buying some 14500 li-ion AA sized batteries? They're about 5 bucks for a 2 pack at dealextreme. Your output will go from 120 on turbo to over 200 lumen out the front and you can still recharge them around 1000 times a piece.
yoyoguy161 2 years ago
Great light, but the only problem is that it rolls when you lay it flat, an issue that is solved in the LD10 which is a slightly better light. I have the LD1 and the L2D (2xAA batteries and brighter), but in 95% of the time I always pick the smaller LD1, it's just a wonderful light.

Fenix Tactical . com has some of the best prices. Thats were I picked up my TK11 and I plan on getting more Fenix lights.

What is the difference b/w L1D and the LD10?
xxmichoxx 2 years ago
basically the LD10 is an LD20 with a shorter body, watch his LD20 vids and imagine the length, and battery life of the L1D and you have the LD10.

briguy3418 2 years ago
Somethings I wish were different about the light:
I wish it had a momentary on mode.
I wish all the light level modes were accessible simply by adjusting the bezel, not by manipulating the tail button.
I also wish it didn't have the Strobe/SOS function.
That way it would be the PERFECT Tactical/Survival/Bug Out Kit/Bag light.
I like the fact it takes common AA batteries, and the fact that it has good light level choices.
PatriotAr15 2 years ago
I still think its a totally awesome light btw, and it will end up replacing my streamlight Tasklight 2AAs AND my Surefire G2s.
This one light, can serve the same functions of both lights. (Tactical AND Practical)

Thanks to Nutn for turning me onto this great flashlight.

argus91 2 years ago 3
Got one on order with head band and diffuser. You mentioned the heads being swappable... I found that Fenix will sell you just the bodies and tail caps for lights to convert your L1D to a L2D or even to a P2D or any combination that share a bezel diameter at a less that half the cost of a new light... how cool is that!
stevebarnes2 2 years ago
You cannot really swap the heads, because they're not designed to receive the same voltage input. The L2D work with 2xAA cells, give 1.5v x 2 = 3v input, while the L1D work with only 1xAA = 1.5v input. If you put the L2D head on L1D body, the light will stay all time on the lowest level, no matter the setting you choose. On the other side, if you put the L1D head on the L2D, it's the exact opposite, all time on the highest level. I tell you that because I've both these flaslights and I tried

Keep up the great work.

can you use alkaline batteries in this light?
kabafan101 3 years ago
yes
meowned 2 years ago
@kabafan101 One can, but I wouldn't operate it on high or turbo. Alkalines just can not sustain that kind of power output, and the harder you draw from an alkaline the more likely it will leak.
Use rechargeable or lithium.

what's your opinion of batteries: rechargeables are available but do they reliably work? fenix offers them for sale-anyone checked/ tested these out ?

just got my Fenix TK10 based off of your reviews on the Fenix brand torches. Everything you stated is dead on correct. Lots of flashlight for the money, I would even say exact same light discharge as my $400 Surefire. Great honest reviews you have. Trust me guys...Nutnfancy knows what he's talking about.

Fenix lights are GTG.

review a cold steel tomahawk..please
JCJLGboy 3 years ago
Umm, I have the trail hawk and I like it. Out of the box it was dull, had to take bastard file out and bring the edge back. It chops pretty good now. I like the hammer poll. One time a tree fell on my neighbors house and I attacked it with just my trail hawk it did the job. The handles are straight so you can throw it but for a chopper you might want a lanyard so your hand doesn't slip off. JIC
vanrickenstien 3 years ago
you say this all the time, why not buy one, then you will find out if you like it. is that so hard?
mrbeligos 3 years ago
A caveat with rechargeable Li-ion batteries is that they are dangerous if used incorrectly. Go to google and search batteryuniversity and read up about Li-ion safety and gather some knowledge before you decide to use rechargeable Li-ions. Most of the time brand less batteries are not of quality and are very dangerous. Stick to US and Japan made cells. BTW Great review.

fenix is a chinese company. these flashlights should cost ALOT less - $20 max.
adaminfinitum 3 years ago
Because its chinese doesnt mean it should cost less. For the quality you are getting it is a steal at around $50. Compared to Surefire, the build quality is on par.
OppForce 3 years ago 3
im glad you wrote that because i didnt know how to say the same
mysciencenow 3 years ago
lower production costs should create a lower retail price in a competitive market. if you think something that costs a few dollars to make is a steal at $50, i can't help you.
adaminfinitum 3 years ago
Raw material costs of a Fenix are about the same as a Surefire. But the min wage in China is lower than that of the US. Therefore Fenix does cost less than Surefire.
OppForce 3 years ago 4
Have you looked at fenix's books, or did you pull that production cost out your ass?
redmunkee 3 years ago
That's a pretty ignorant thing to say.
ryantheallstar 3 years ago
it's basic economics.
adaminfinitum 3 years ago
you have obviously never owned one there better than surefires that cost 3 or 4 times as much and way brighter
chrisw40 3 years ago
they might be better than surefire - i don't know. i do know surefires only cost about 25% more and are made in america.
adaminfinitum 3 years ago
Only 25% huh try 100% to 200% i dont know what kind of surefires your taliking about must be the cheap ones they carry at Lowes.
chrisw40 3 years ago 5
Surefire and Fenix market to different consumers so Fenix is better at general use and Surefire is usually better at others. Surefires are also pretty expensive compared to Fenix. Not all components of Surefire is made in US.
OppForce 3 years ago
A 225 lumen light from fenix costs around $60-70, a surefire light with similar output and shorter run time costs $300-400. How is that a 25% difference? Don't lecture us about economics when you don't know basic math.
redmunkee 3 years ago 2

Only 25%? Yea a fenix l2d at 180 lumens that costs $50 is only 25% cheaper then a $200 surefire?

hey nutnfancy.. have you ever thought about using rechargeable lithium batteries? check them out by some chinese makers like superfire and stuff.

Crazy.
hrosemd 3 years ago
unless you use rechargeable batteries the turbo selection becomes costly, especially for 123 type batteries.
mrbeligos 3 years ago
Not if you buy in bulk. CR123 batteries can even be cheaper than AAs.
redmunkee 3 years ago 2
Yeah I have the P1D CE too, it's my current EDC key chain light. And speaking of 2xCR123 lights, I have the Olight M20 warrior. On paper it puts out 250 lumens for 4.5 hours. Seems to best fenix's tactical series, although I don't own any of fenix's TK lights so I can't speak from experience, only from what their websites say. BTW I also ordered a solarforce L2B, it's a cheap Surefire 6P clone (I'm talking $29 here!) that claims to put out 300 lumens. I'll get back to you on how that turns out.
