Great song I first heard on the "Good Vibrations" boxed set, but this version in the video is actually longer and of much higher audio quality than the version on that set. Does anyone know if there are different versions of the song? Where did this come from? Thanks. The one I have seems to come from the same basic recording but is missing a few seconds and sounds a little fuzzier, like it was made from a copy of a copy.
@BeachBoysJanDean1 I agree...seemingly so simple yet really sophisticated and cleverly constructed. the minor key is ace. a really underrated track. alongwith the beatles, the beach boys define the 60s
@southrider go listen to the stuff that doesn't get a lot of airplay. There's plenty of great music being made right now, don't shut yourself off to it.
@rutgers1961 I was just thinking about when I would say the last of truly good music left, and 1985 was soon before rap and grunge came in and ruined the music scene. I remember when I heard Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit:" in 1991, I turned modern Top 40 radio off, and haven't listened to it since. But looking back historically, people had talent- played instruments and wrote worthy songs and sang well without the help of computers before the mid-'80s. Actually, the '30s-'70s were the best.
I can close my eyes and remember listening to this at my college radio station back in Morrisville, NY. I used to kick that 15" monitor up full tilt when this song was on! What a great time to grow up. Who the hell is Kanye West? Who is Boy George? The Beach Boys will live forever.
so nostalgic- I was 16 growing up in Nor Calif and going to Santa Cruz every chance I got- listening to this stuff- No one had more fun growing up I asure you
I'm not going to read all 221 comments, but someone asked if that was Sharon Tate (around 1:05). Yes it is from the movie "Don't Make Waves". Great, under-appreciated song.
@drs82 Probably because it came around as a lot of bands were doing more reflective stuff, getting into a Social & Political style of writing. And the Beach Boys? Well, all they wanted to do was get back to the beach ASAP!!! Loved the Tune ,Myself!!
Love this song. Man, these guys know how to lay down a groove. Makes you wanna get up and dance and throw down the romance. Thank God for the Beach Boys. Amen!
Brian's high part in the chorus (or the melody for it, anyway) is lifted from Underwater, an early 60s instrumental by the Frogmen (elsewhere on YouTube). The Hey Now Hey Now line is a direct lift from a 50s (60s?) pop-R&B type song. Anyone know which one? I used to know but can't recall. Google hasn't helped.
@rangergrrrl The R&B tune you may be thinking of is 'Finger Poppin' time' by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. Hey now, hey now - plus there's that handclapping that eamonosu refers to in opening comment above. Really hear it on 'let's go lets' go let's go' .
Hank sounds a bit like Chubby Checker to me. Good ear, RG. Hey now.
@RiffCraft8 hank wrote the twist brian wilson did a song im broke it reminds me of something well its do it again it has that hey now hey now watch the video in here [paradoxicly al quit the beach boys to go to dental school because they were doing chubby checker songs then wanted back in when they did originals ] .
@RiffCraft8 I always think of Hank Ballard & The Midnighters "Finger Poppin' Time" when I hear this. It's got to be where they got the "hey now, hey now" form.
what was so memorable about this song is the rhythm section, the tight bass and drums kicked-off a powerful new sound not heard before and ther handclap in the chorus added to it. turn it up and see what i mean.
VH1 recently showed the top 100 artists of all time. Sadly, the Beatles were #1. The Beach Boys (the FAR superior band in my opinion) were #15. Bogus. They lasted longer than the Beatles even though Mike Love is apparently a lawsuit crazy prick.
@thehal698 I'll admit that the Beatles have some good stuff, but to me the Beach Boys are just better. Something about the harmonies or being around for what would essentially be millions of years in the music business.
@1obxeclipsedriver - well actually Mike Love sues Brian for somewhat noble reasons. A couple of times, the people surrounding Brian took advantage of his mental state to get him to agree to business deals without consulting Love or the Beach Boys as a corporation. Mike sues to stop the infringement of not only his rights but the rights of Brian and the other deceased Wilson brother's families.

This track showed that the Beach Boys held great promise as a solid rock band,
a promise that was *not* fulfilled.
They began reading their reviews and recording
for the *fairies & débutantes* [you read that right, administrator] in the press.
They ultimately became caricatures, having long since lost any real rock nuts they might have had.
Too bad---the story of too many groups who started out so strong.
