Its logically easier to get sound out of material then it is out of an organic substance (i.e. Fruit). The fact one is able to get a sound, let alone close to correct pitch and play a song on it is amazing in itself.

I would think the fruit over time would rot-out, unless you eat it soon after carving it out, thus it doesnt go to waste. Proper care for the fruit like refridgerating it will prolong its expiration date.
