High audio quality here, but John McCormack, low fidelity and all, takes the biscuit for best recording of this song, and just about every song he ever did. Only Josh Groban comes close to his voice, with Harry Secombe passed on.
Atentamente. Miguel Rodríguez PH,D.
@REDPOWERable Actually its an English song although the writers parents were Irish - look up "Jack Judge" on wikipedia for details. Also as an Irishman I can tell you your your history is nonsense the "Greatest Empire" was not that great and they just walked away leaving us to kill each other.........
There are some excellent clips here. The tsar and tsarevitch inspecting troops (1.17-1.21), General Gallieni ordering the taxis of Paris to rush troops to the Marne front 1914, saving the day and boosting morale (1.23-1.43).
This is not a Tipperary Song. No self respecting Tipp man or woman would ever sing this thing. It was a recruiting song used by the brittish to get some of the best fighting men in the world to join the brittish army and become cannon fodder on the western front in WW1 aka 'the great folly'. Utube 'The Galtee Mountain Boy' for a real Tipperary song.
I don't think there is any footage of the Americans in this, but there is film of the Russians, the French, the British, the Germans, the Austrians and the Canadians.
If the discription of the timing of the video is accurate, there shoud be no Americans in the clip. The First Battle of the Marne was fought in September 1914. The USA didn't enter WWI until 1917.
great song for all those mentioned and not mentioned im sure those who were not mentioned and fought would be humble enough were they alive to just enjoy the song and not the praise great song dont take it off
If anyone else feels compelled to mention I forgot a group, I am removing this. I am up to the eyeballs of hearing it. I admire all of them fought and don't mean to cause offense, but this is getting very annoying and utterly ridiculous! If you have a problem with what I used, then make your own!
Well you can't cover them all. It was a ruddy world war people from Australia to Zanzibar and everything in-between fought from the Falklands to Siberia.
@PhantomHobbit Please don't remove this link. So far, it is the best video I have found connected with this wonderful song. Frankly, I don't care which army is included or exluded...it's such a wonderful source of nostalgia that no one should care about who's missing in the video.
I wish I could find this song sung by a western male choir.
Okay this is to everyone who watches this. This video was designed to be a small representative group of the people who fought in World War I. I used the footage available to me which was primarily British, French, German, Austrian, and Russian. I supplemented it with pictures from another project I made of Americans and Germans during WWI because they are my primary historical focus.
@PhantomHobbit oh, i think they are german singing, I'm English, born and bred in London, do the people of "our side" feel they lost??? and hate Germany?, remember, those poor german soldiers out there, were no different to the brits out there, they were scared, and did not want to be there, they no more wanted to kill a brit, than a brit a german. All those guys on the front line, did not want to be there, English or German
The romanians became betrayers, and run the Austro-Hungary over, exactly Hungary to seize as many land - that has never belonged to them-, as they could.
The rumanians were mountain dwellers, and they came down from the mountains in the XIV centaury. So there was nothing to gaining back!
hey, that is the strangest version i have ever heard...that is actually an English-Russian mix...if u listen carefully at the beginning nonetheless most enjoyable...
It´s a great song. First time I have heard it where on the movie "Das Boot DC", vor a long time on vhs. Last week i remamber the song, dont now the name, and wonts to now the fucking Name but can´t remebmer.
panzermatt & stormywindmill: I have thought this exact same thing! I am Russian living in the USA. I respect Germans as my white brothers; why they invaded Russia and make this mistake is sad. We should unit - our common enemy is african and muslim macaques that come to our European and white lands: we must stand against this for our future.
I cannot help looking on those colums of Doomed men with out thinking of what a waste it all was,If not for WW 1 and WW 2 how many more white people there would be in the 21stCentury
awesome, great work. It rarely happens on Youtube that I watch a video three times. Good to know that there are still people out there with a good taste. Would you be so kind to tell me which recording of the song that is.
This song and movie clip is just beautiful the way it is--thank you, and great job!

@Quetzalpoca Probably. It was written by a chap called Jack Judge in (I think) 1912.Apparently his grandparents were from Tipperary.

Ya nailed it on the head!!
I can't believe people took 'offense' that you didn't "mention so-and-so" or use footage about "XYZ nation"!!!
Good grief!!
It's a lovely song... but instead of enjoying it for what it is, some folks would rather bitch and moan about secondaries!
Ridiculous!

That's what caused WW1 in the first place-bitching about secondaries.
