I didn't know pork was that popular in Japan. I can't believe how good the convenient store foods are and they are relatively inexpensive. The US needs to take some notes.
I practically live off these things. They are so convenient and always very good. Haven't seen this particular one though and it looks very good. Could I ask what store you bought it from?
@KajePanik, ive seen markets in the usa carry them. just depends if there is a large enough Asian population where you live. of course they are not imports but rather made in the country that they are being sold in.
We have these kinds of bentos and others here in Hawaii. Whenever I'm stateside I always miss my musubi/manapua and porkhash [bao and dim sum]/bento fix from 711 whenever I pass one.
I'm about to ask a totally random question, only because this is the most recent video about Japan, but is it true the Japanese avoid the numbers 4 and 9 because it reminds them of death and suffering?
@BeastlsTheB2ST I don't know about the 9, but 4 in Japan is pronounced "shi" which can also mean death... So they avoid giving money to people in multiples of 4 and such...
Ha! I beat you to the punch this time, sir! I started eating BEFORE I started watching the video........but your bento still looks better than my food T.T
I wish U.S. convenient stores had such quality. Instead, you get an overcooked hotdog, or stale nachos. I miss going to Lawson's and nabbing a bento or some onigiri, a can of UCC Coffee or Pocari Sweat, and just walking to the park to eat lunch... I used to visit family in Japan more regularly, but you know how it is as you get older.
@gwendolynmia but we DO! have that America. If you go to Japanese Supermarkets ( primarily located in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego) you can find many boxed lunches including bento combinations, sushi, donburi, etc in a takeaway food isle! and they are DELICIOUS!
Haha, well then I wished I lived in San Francisco/LA/San Diego, because in the Asian food markets where I live, the closest thing you can get to a meal on the go, is like, a red bean bun. Haha.
ya going all out on junkfood, like in europe u pay 3 euros for a tiny healthy sandwhich, thats like 4.50 dollars.
good all the healthy people just adjust their lives to the price, just eat enough home and when you need to eat, 3 euros healthy is cheap compared to 3 euros of destructing Mac donalds burger though.
why?? your body has no price :P, i dont know friends who eat junkfood, happy im not alone for now (Y).
wow i totally wish we had such fancy ready to eat meals in america like that all we have is half assed microwave tv dinners that never taste remotely fresh but i am sure that tasted very high quality Nice Video :)
For five dollars that's an extremely good value! Here in America that would be at least 8-10 dollars and would probably wouldn't taste half as good. You can't go wrong in Japan when the food is cheap and healthy! Thanks for sharing!
Just one question ( and probably a stupid one) : here in Holland you can buy pre-made sushi and not so often pre-made bento, but it doesn't taste like fresh made at all!! How does the pre-made taste in Japan?? You always make my tummy growl like a bear with your food&drinks list!!! Thank you for being here and teach us the Japanese way of handling life!!
My first trip to Japan had me jetlagged and I went to a combini in the middle of the night and got a bento heated up to go and couldn't believe how good it was compared to stuff in the US. Really quality stuff.
@CityMundane It means "Let's Eat!" or the literal translation would be "I humbly receive." (from wiki) It's usually said right before you start eating. :D
I am Japanese person. I know the meaning,I just wondered you understand that or not.
Well that quote from wiki isn't sufficient."itadakimasu" is a word expresses gratitude to the cooker, and life of animals sacrificed for the life of yours. That's the true meaning of "itadakimasu".
@CityMundane It's just a way of generalizing the word ”いただきます” in foreigner's perspective. Of course we wouldn't know the deep meaning of it like you've explained however, we perceive it as showing gratitude to a person who made the food for us. Well isn't that the whole point?? Nevertheless, your explanation has helped a lot of people here who wants to know the "real" meaning of "itadakimasu" XD
I've had this one. Very tasty. Thankfully there's a nice sized portion of rice or I would have still been hungry. That's the only comment I can make on Japanese portion sizes.
When I was in the Marines, we had a 6-month deployment to Japan. When we were on the bus from the Okinawa airport, we got bentos like that, except it seemed to have a little bit of everything, maybe a dozen or so different types of food in smaller portions. But there was one problem: they were cold! I would have actually been able to stomach most of the stuff if it were hot, but giving us cold bentos didn't help much.
@imtheonlysane1here yeah I'm so used to having almost all my meat dishes heated. Though they're the same meal, it just feels strange eating them cold (especially the particularly textury meats)
Do most rice dishes in Japan include rice vinegar? i honestly do not like it on sushi rice so i ask for no vinegar...but do convenient lunch boxes include it?
@TheJapanChannelDcom Wow. Convenient store food in Japan looks so good! And it's for rice & tonkatsu and daikon as well?! o_O Dang. I'd say trying to find convenient store food in the US of this quality would be impossible or probably not cost effective at all...LOL.
But the calories will kill you. Just look over the label next time you eat one of the same size.
