  • my dad has the 53 plate 2.2 3dr SRi. Brilliant car and very quick.

  • I've got a 17dti diesel estate. Superb car, never breaks down, cost me peanuts old rep car, 150,000 miles on the clock full tank is good for 500-600 miles over a long distance. Roof bars and boot space, you can get all your family in there with 3 surfboards on the roof and all your cricket gear in the back. It's a brilliant utility car and I love it!

  • i have 1.6 16v opel astra automatic for 12 years and it never broke down, it's just amazing!

  • @ultraszgb i have 2001 1.7 dti 5 speed manual. and i have the same opinion

  • one of ellesmere ports finest there jeremey !!!

  • Look´s like Jeremy is pregnant in 0:35

  • the engine on 1998-2004

2004-2009 as Astra Classic II in Poland 2002-2009 as Astra Classic II in Egypt

1998-2011 in Brazil (facelift version) Opel Astra/ Chevrolet Astra/

Chevrolet Viva/ Holden Astra/ Vauxhall Astra

    Engine

    1.4L 1.6L 1.7L 1.8L 2.0L 2.2L 2.4L I4 4.0L V8

  • In the Brazil, the Chevrolet Astra is the best of the same cars!!

    Focus = troubles!!

    Golf = 4ª generation (2011)

And, the Opel Astra is "Vectra", with a gas engine, 2.0l, Ohc, 140 horse power of power and 19,7 kgfm @ 2.600 rpm!

It's delicious to drive in the urban traffic and a bullet on the road!!

  • Astra is a great car, no matter what they say. Of course, you can't compare it to more expensive cars, but it's great. I had mine for 7 years and I had no problems at all.

  • I've driven many mk4 Astras and find them very good cars. Both my parents and brother all have mk4 Astras. Never knew there was a 1.2 version and must be so gutless. The mk4 had a high depreciation rate from new so many secondhand bargains to be had. I did a 110 mile round trip in a mk4 1.6SXi and got 55 mpg with careful driving. The mk4 was far better than the mk3, especially in terms of build quality and the mk4 shouldn't rust in theory. They may look a bit bland but I love them.

  • what is the song name at 1:20 ???

  • That isn t fair,,the Golf was more expensive

  • 1:37 Jeremy, you forgot Saturn!

  • he forgot to mention how safe they were, mine jsut got t-boned by a guy that ran a red light.

sure its written off, but my passengers and i only have whiplash!

  • Ha ha.

The grey thing is for the dust caps?!

lol I've had my astra/4 for 7 years, never knew that!

  • GM has more money than God(tm)?

You mean, Obamarama and Gov't Motors ripped off the US Taxpayers !

  • Tape player was a bit old school for a car then wasn't it?

  • DISASTRAs are shite and always will be.

  • see when vauxhall made the mk4 astra they forgot a few letters off the start of the name its really called a vauxhall DISASTRA

  • its a vauxhall of course its crap

  • GM have so so much money and they sent out a new car wiv faulty air bag and NO ABS on some of the models...in 1998?! SORRY MATE THAT IS JUST UNACCEPTABLE!!!

  • Focus is the best, with the Golf.

  • @VOLVORULEZ1995 Focus is the best oh yess

  • the astra looks the best but looks can be deceiving...

  • when he said all the brands under GM he forgot Saturn although you guys probably would have wanted a Saturn in Europe

  • what did he said about the diesels please??

  • @lordshark24 He said "worthless diesels"

  • @2491cc thx, spanish speaker here =)

  • @2491cc wtf my diesel is a bullet .. thx pal

  • idiot.. just because he is payed to present the show doesnt mean he is right ... he say that the mk4 is much much better then the mk3 but in fact my simple mk3 beats today many cars in the streets. cars like ... his icon the golf .....

  • Those doors look alot like Chevy Cobalt doors.

  • My parents have a 2002 Astra, 5-door hatch 2.0l Diesel [with factory turbo] and generally runs like a charm. It has a problem with the brakes which wear off faster than usual, but it's fast and comfortable...with good handling. And , no, it doesn't look dull [if clean of course :P]

  • 33 miles to the gallon is shit...my Polo 1.4 TDI gets 75mpg combined. In today's age where petrol/gas prices are up the roof, you want fuel economy, not super speed. I'm not sure about you guys, but £1.50 for a litre of diesel? FAACK NO!

  • @raja1994 33 MPG is pretty good. My last Expedition only do about 11 MPG, or 15 in UK numbers.

  • @mercedescl i drive a 2008 civic type r... and that averages 31mpg... so 33mpg is awful... a 1.6 astra and a 2.0 i-vtec 200bhp type r... 2mpg difference??

  • @vteckicksarse my astra G does 49mpg, it's the way the astra's been driven

  • do you have the Vauxhall Omega review ? Thanks..

  • Meh, don't really like these Astra's. It's not that they're bad cars, but they are just a bit too bland. From those days I prefer the Ford Focus.

I have to admit though, the design of the new Astra is awesome while the new Focus is just a mess.

  • I have an astra 1.4 in blue and the suspension is shocking and fuel economy is terrible I would fuking love a turbo diesel golf or bora or even better a gttdi compared to mine

  • junk

  • The 98 Astra CD 1.6 16V still is on the road. The vehicle details for R669 TBM are: Date of Liability 01 07 2011 Date of First Registration 06 02 1998 Year of Manufacture 1998 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1598CC CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Licence Not Due Vehicle Colour BLUE
  • Why would anyone want to buy a Daewoo Lanos over an Astra...or a Golf, or a Focus/Escort, or a Corolla, or anything in that sector at the time. 'Hateful' car.

  • @MsClaireLouLou I agree, to an extent, but I still like the current Top Gear format, the road trips, the challenges, etc. Still, I do miss the older style seen in this video. They should really do both styles, and make Top Gear a TWO hour show, not just one or one and twenty mins.

  • I would say, watching this film back 13 years later, the Astra is literally the only one that doesn't look 'old'...

  • @LiamC123321 I 100% agree. Somebody asked me in the street the other day if my car was brand new!!!

  • @LiamC123321 I 100% agree. Somebody asked me in the street the other day if my car was brand new!!!

  • @LiamC123321 True! It's still fresh, although it looked dull back than. Not every car can do that. Even the Golf mk4 it's starting to look dull.

  • @LiamC123321 The Focus does look better mind...

  • 'A4 paper, just color it blue'

    so true!

  • Those cars have ridiculously low insurance groups, even for a 2.0 Estate, the insurance group is on 6.

  • astra is better then all this cars.

  • @djufanfu well I own one from 2001 1.7 dti and I love it, there is a video whit my car on my chanel (Astra G caravan & Borbet '17 TOYO) if you guys are interested

  • This is my car, which I love !!!

  • Audi Astra¿? WTF

  • The new Astra Convertible 2009 is fucking HOT!

  • @yokhana

    Naaaa

Old MK4 coupe is fucking beast!

  • 4:09 "the engine is best described as a device folr moving you around". lol!

  • astra coupe is sloww got beaten by a standard volvo 850 which weighs so much more, astra's are plain dull no matter which one you buy its just an a-b device

  • 3:10 PERVERT(s) !!!

You just can't stop your lowest, amoral, voyeuristic, debauched, lecherous stimulus... m?

And you call this "broadcast for cars" ?.... to see the disgusting crotch, strided IN FRONT of the car ?

    PFU !...western idiots !!!

Remember, because of EXACTLY these "tiny", "hidden", pervert tricks, the next generation(s) will be more and more TWISTED !

You're actually - killers fo the Morality, Innocence and Childish Purity !

    stupid shacks !!! DEMORALIZATORS !!!

  • @sahaja75 suck my balls

  • The Astra does it's job. And not really bad. Way better then a Focus, and the new Vauxhall/ Opel is just awesome. LOL Our Astra from 1995 still works O_O LOLWUT??!!

  • @Genius83 Uhm.... it has more space XD

No it's a great car, and we had a Focus, and it was also GREAT, but I liked the Opel more, because of the more space and it was really reliable. Our Focus broke down after 7 years, while our Opel is still working

  • why would he review this heap of shit ?

  • @jamiej2k6 Because it was 1998 you braindead moron.

  • @Megaseawolf True

  • i like this car.. handles great, besides it is kinna fast

  • @Megaseawolf It does move pretty fast for a 1.4L engine, but I got mine Coupe with 2.0L, so to speak 'the sport version' or what ever, it's way better :D

  • i think it looks much better then any others presented in it s video. the focus is pretty ugly, the wolkswagen looks like a match box

  • here in mexico they sell that car in 2004 lol bt mexico clames for a 2.4L engile capable of 160 hp and if u cut cat coverter and put soem intake its good for 180 hp realy well equipt and ligt weigt the 2.4 does 6.5 seconds 0 to 100kph and the 1.8 do ir in 9 y realy think its a good valiw for moneys

  • These Astras were about as dull to drive as a dishwasher, the only good thing about them was the Isuzu Diesel enignes that you could get amazing MPG figures from!

The Focus kicked this generation of Astra's ass all over the shop and went on to become European Car of the year 1998 & one of the UK's best-selling cars.

  • clarkson looks fatter here :o

  • I drive a mk4 astra atm, Great cars lovely and smooth, buut ill be getting a focus to replace as there nicer

  • @Gazzafiesta there both shit

  • cassette player lol

  • @Cookiefan1876 They re taxed it for a year it looks like.
  • ASTRA KING FOREVER

  • check out the -transcribe audio- feature in this video. Epic fail.

  • tape?? @1:17 tape player in 1998?

  • @timppa600 haha yeah my 2000 hyundai elantra has a tape player? how lame is that right?

  • @alandona3 even my 2002 corsa had a standard tape player!

  • Comment removed

  • I want that wood effect centre console lol

  • astras rule boii

  • Jeremy Clarkson is so funny and one of the best car show presenters around - 5th Gear doesn't do it for me and never will. Long live Top Gear.

  • I'm due to pick up one of thease very soon, good car, but it'l do till i get my focus

  • how stupid people looked back then :D

  • I have a DTi (Isuzu engine 16v version). The suspension on these things are really nice. The Focus isn't bad, but I think the Astra is simply the best all rounder as he says...

I could definitely say something about the dodgy electronic throttle setup though. Iffy at low revs, apart from that, all very nice...

  • shame hes doesn't test the 2.2 gsi in blue now that is a sweet car.and fairly rapid.i always find vauxhalls good value for money.

  • much better than a focus

  • @ash7990

    why?

  • better build quality/more solid, tougher, and although the astra interior is bland, it doesnt look or feel as cheap as the focus. Astra far more comfortable than the focus I drove, and just a bit nicer to drive.

  • @ash7990

The engines are better and in my opinion it aged much better than the focus too.

  • @danielj06 i dont agree i think the focus has aged better because it still looks bonkers today with a funny dashboard to boot, the astra looks really old inside and a little boxish on the outside not quite and silky as the focus lines.

i do think the astra's are pretty good tho but i bet the focus would disappear on some winding country lanes because it a step ahead in the handling department, alot of brand new 09/10 cars don't have independent rear suspension yet and at the time so didnt astra

  • @jinx20001 I don't fault the Focus on it's drive, it's superb IMO, and it most certainly would leave the astra behind in the twisties. Truth be told i much prefer the interior of the astra, it's the quirkiness of the focus that makes it feel older to me, but hey, just my opinion :) Suppose i agree on the exterior too, but again, that does it for me :P Guess I'm just boring, haha!

  • @ash7990 Bullshit.

focus is the best bang for buck.

    Seriously.

  • @ash7990 da fuct

  • @mofunzonecom I see.

  • @ash7990 No it isn't :-P

  • @Genius83 Ford Focus I drove was uncomfortable hard seats, way over sensitive and horrible to park. Also pretty slow. My old 1.4 Rover was quicker than the 1.6 Focus I drove.

  • @ash7990 From which side?

  • @BlaugranaFAN Astra is more comfortable, smoother engines, better build quality, better rust protection etc.

  • @ash7990 I must disagree about comfort. For tall person like me (195cm) is very comfortable, in Astra i have problems behind the wheel. Engines? Mayby, but my 1.6 Focus Combi is quite good, especially after 3000 rpm. Quite economical too. 7l/100km i nice result, my mate have Audi A3 1.6 and have about 9/100km. I must agree about rust protection, my is now in repair about rust. Is from 1999, but Ford's don't have galvanized bodywork like Astra. Thats minor minus of Focus.

  • Oh, and Focus is like glued to the road in the corners, thats fantastic :).

  • @ash7990 No chance

i've had 2 astras and a focus, both astras broke within a week, focus diden't brake and i owne it a year, vauxhalls reliability is shit lol

  • good point...

  • Although this is the best looking Astra ever made (did I say best looking?!), it's like every Astra boring, ugly, dull to drive and miles away from its competitors (even the new Astra 2010 is). Why don't they just stop producing them? XD

  • Everone is entitled to their opinions, but if Astras were so bad why do people keep buying them, hence meaning Vauxhall needs to keep building them? I have the MK4 Astra 2.2, and i love it, plus their new CDTi 150 does 0-60 in 8 seconds, you have to admit that is excellent for a Diesel, plus you get 50mpg, little remap could that get to about 220bhp, still keeping excellent fuel economy,

  • I'm hoping to get an Astra for my second car...

can't get insured on anything else lol. it's a joke.

  • get a focus :D

  • got a metallic black '00 reg version of this car - wouldn't change it for the world

  • "A light on the dashboard telling me that the airbag isn't working" at 4:28, huh?!! Jezza, don't you know by now to expect problems right of the bat with a brand new General Mistake car?!!

  • GM - more money than GOD.

    11 years later - bankrupt.

    Times change.

  • @Cods00 they also dont own isuzu pontiac oldsmobile saab

  • Hard to believe that even in 1997 car's still had cassette tape player's.

  • Do you have the vectra B review? He mentions it in this video the "fancy door mirrors".

  • Comment removed

  • For some unexplainable reason that car is still made in brazil today, and for an even more strange reason it's considered to be very cool among teenagers.

  • Fazer o que né ? gosto é igual a bunda : uns tem outros não ...

  • Same car is still in sale in Serbia, as Astra Classic.

  • Goth, that astra was such a Boring car. Dull to watch at in a trafic jam. Drary to drive one.

But it was a very practical and well equiped.

It's a reasonable car for someone who isn't interested at all in cars. ;-)

  • do you have the ford focus review ? thanks

  • yes i do i will upload asap

  • thanks

  • @aly369 Dull and boring. Ford is dead. Sales in the UK have fallen on Fords in the last 5 years by 20 percent. While most other car sales have risen. Ha :)

  • @joshieboi005 Yes I will agree on that, Hence now we have a vw passat

  • LOL when he's talking about how rich GM is :P

  • lol vice city music

  • Does that Golf has a Dutch License Plate?
