I've got a 17dti diesel estate. Superb car, never breaks down, cost me peanuts old rep car, 150,000 miles on the clock full tank is good for 500-600 miles over a long distance. Roof bars and boot space, you can get all your family in there with 3 surfboards on the roof and all your cricket gear in the back. It's a brilliant utility car and I love it!
Astra is a great car, no matter what they say. Of course, you can't compare it to more expensive cars, but it's great. I had mine for 7 years and I had no problems at all.
I've driven many mk4 Astras and find them very good cars. Both my parents and brother all have mk4 Astras. Never knew there was a 1.2 version and must be so gutless. The mk4 had a high depreciation rate from new so many secondhand bargains to be had. I did a 110 mile round trip in a mk4 1.6SXi and got 55 mpg with careful driving. The mk4 was far better than the mk3, especially in terms of build quality and the mk4 shouldn't rust in theory. They may look a bit bland but I love them.
GM have so so much money and they sent out a new car wiv faulty air bag and NO ABS on some of the models...in 1998?! SORRY MATE THAT IS JUST UNACCEPTABLE!!!
idiot.. just because he is payed to present the show doesnt mean he is right ... he say that the mk4 is much much better then the mk3 but in fact my simple mk3 beats today many cars in the streets. cars like ... his icon the golf .....
My parents have a 2002 Astra, 5-door hatch 2.0l Diesel [with factory turbo] and generally runs like a charm. It has a problem with the brakes which wear off faster than usual, but it's fast and comfortable...with good handling. And , no, it doesn't look dull [if clean of course :P]
33 miles to the gallon is shit...my Polo 1.4 TDI gets 75mpg combined. In today's age where petrol/gas prices are up the roof, you want fuel economy, not super speed. I'm not sure about you guys, but £1.50 for a litre of diesel? FAACK NO!
@mercedescl i drive a 2008 civic type r... and that averages 31mpg... so 33mpg is awful... a 1.6 astra and a 2.0 i-vtec 200bhp type r... 2mpg difference??
I have an astra 1.4 in blue and the suspension is shocking and fuel economy is terrible I would fuking love a turbo diesel golf or bora or even better a gttdi compared to mine
The 98 Astra CD 1.6 16V still is on the road. The vehicle details for R669 TBM are: Date of Liability 01 07 2011 Date of First Registration 06 02 1998 Year of Manufacture 1998 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1598CC CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Licence Not Due Vehicle Colour BLUE
Why would anyone want to buy a Daewoo Lanos over an Astra...or a Golf, or a Focus/Escort, or a Corolla, or anything in that sector at the time. 'Hateful' car.
@MsClaireLouLou I agree, to an extent, but I still like the current Top Gear format, the road trips, the challenges, etc. Still, I do miss the older style seen in this video. They should really do both styles, and make Top Gear a TWO hour show, not just one or one and twenty mins.
@djufanfu well I own one from 2001 1.7 dti and I love it, there is a video whit my car on my chanel (Astra G caravan & Borbet '17 TOYO) if you guys are interested
astra coupe is sloww got beaten by a standard volvo 850 which weighs so much more, astra's are plain dull no matter which one you buy its just an a-b device
The Astra does it's job. And not really bad. Way better then a Focus, and the new Vauxhall/ Opel is just awesome. LOL Our Astra from 1995 still works O_O LOLWUT??!!
@ultrawaregamestudios fair enough the Astra mk4 was a good car, but how exactly is it better than the better handling, better looking, and more reliable (fact!), than the Ford Focus?
No it's a great car, and we had a Focus, and it was also GREAT, but I liked the Opel more, because of the more space and it was really reliable. Our Focus broke down after 7 years, while our Opel is still working
@Megaseawolf It does move pretty fast for a 1.4L engine, but I got mine Coupe with 2.0L, so to speak 'the sport version' or what ever, it's way better :D
here in mexico they sell that car in 2004 lol bt mexico clames for a 2.4L engile capable of 160 hp and if u cut cat coverter and put soem intake its good for 180 hp realy well equipt and ligt weigt the 2.4 does 6.5 seconds 0 to 100kph and the 1.8 do ir in 9 y realy think its a good valiw for moneys
These Astras were about as dull to drive as a dishwasher, the only good thing about them was the Isuzu Diesel enignes that you could get amazing MPG figures from!
The Focus kicked this generation of Astra's ass all over the shop and went on to become European Car of the year 1998 & one of the UK's best-selling cars.
@Cookiefan1876 They re taxed it for a year it looks like.
I have a DTi (Isuzu engine 16v version). The suspension on these things are really nice. The Focus isn't bad, but I think the Astra is simply the best all rounder as he says...
I could definitely say something about the dodgy electronic throttle setup though. Iffy at low revs, apart from that, all very nice...
better build quality/more solid, tougher, and although the astra interior is bland, it doesnt look or feel as cheap as the focus. Astra far more comfortable than the focus I drove, and just a bit nicer to drive.
@danielj06 i dont agree i think the focus has aged better because it still looks bonkers today with a funny dashboard to boot, the astra looks really old inside and a little boxish on the outside not quite and silky as the focus lines.
i do think the astra's are pretty good tho but i bet the focus would disappear on some winding country lanes because it a step ahead in the handling department, alot of brand new 09/10 cars don't have independent rear suspension yet and at the time so didnt astra
@jinx20001 I don't fault the Focus on it's drive, it's superb IMO, and it most certainly would leave the astra behind in the twisties. Truth be told i much prefer the interior of the astra, it's the quirkiness of the focus that makes it feel older to me, but hey, just my opinion :) Suppose i agree on the exterior too, but again, that does it for me :P Guess I'm just boring, haha!
@Genius83 Ford Focus I drove was uncomfortable hard seats, way over sensitive and horrible to park. Also pretty slow. My old 1.4 Rover was quicker than the 1.6 Focus I drove.
@ash7990 I must disagree about comfort. For tall person like me (195cm) is very comfortable, in Astra i have problems behind the wheel. Engines? Mayby, but my 1.6 Focus Combi is quite good, especially after 3000 rpm. Quite economical too. 7l/100km i nice result, my mate have Audi A3 1.6 and have about 9/100km. I must agree about rust protection, my is now in repair about rust. Is from 1999, but Ford's don't have galvanized bodywork like Astra. Thats minor minus of Focus.
Although this is the best looking Astra ever made (did I say best looking?!), it's like every Astra boring, ugly, dull to drive and miles away from its competitors (even the new Astra 2010 is). Why don't they just stop producing them? XD
Everone is entitled to their opinions, but if Astras were so bad why do people keep buying them, hence meaning Vauxhall needs to keep building them? I have the MK4 Astra 2.2, and i love it, plus their new CDTi 150 does 0-60 in 8 seconds, you have to admit that is excellent for a Diesel, plus you get 50mpg, little remap could that get to about 220bhp, still keeping excellent fuel economy,
"A light on the dashboard telling me that the airbag isn't working" at 4:28, huh?!! Jezza, don't you know by now to expect problems right of the bat with a brand new General Mistake car?!!
For some unexplainable reason that car is still made in brazil today, and for an even more strange reason it's considered to be very cool among teenagers.
