  • WOW!!!

  • 1) This song is a masterpiece.

    2) This performance is completely untouchable and perfect.

    3) I want to be Audra McDonald.

  • Am I the only one who feels the need to give her a big hug

  • Perfect. Perfect. PERFECT.

  • Wonderful control!

I love this woman more every time I watch her.

  • Any have the lyrics for this?

  • @tui2den No, this is "The Glamorous Life". Read Sondheim's book if you're not sure.

  • Audra McDonald is my soprano idol.

  • Audra McDonald. Legend.

  • sexykatie90 HAPPY NEW YEARS

  • I love Audra but I prefer the stage version of this song, of course she sings it amazing!

  • 2 people aren't Glamorous.

  • @hottieho13 I think anybody who put the trouble into hitting the dislike button on this either has a serious stick up their arse, or meant to hit "like".

  • Audra is Amazing! if you can't stand her get out the way!

  • Yeah, I did see it. Like I said, she was a corpse - absolutely nothing going on other than the voice. The fact she has 4 Tony's means little to nothing other than a stature in the business - if Zeta-Jones, Spring Awakening and Idina Menzel can win, anybody can.

  • @44chisox um she won her Tonys way before Zeta-Jones,Spring Awakening and Idina Menzel won there.many performers dream of winning ONE tony let alone FOUR(which is an accomplishment actually) Me and you must have been watching a different concert because she wasn't a corpse and certainly not gawdy(unlike Patti Lupone )what do you want her to do ?backflips?cartwheels?can YOU be half the performer she is ?Bernadette peters is anybody ?mady Patinkin is anybody?

  • @hottieho13

Actually, I think she DID do a couple of cartwheels in the revival of 110 in the Shade.

  • @tonywrestles2 seriously! i would pay to see that!

  • @44chisox Did you see her sing this on Stephen Sondheim's 80th Birthday Show? That is why she has 4 Tony's!

  • @tmacattacker I completely agree! She was fabulous! She is a phenomenal talent!

  • @44chisox wow some folks i guess just have know idea about what class is.how trashy,if your jealous of her then why watch her? everyone dosn't have to act stupid and over the top in his songs, that's reserved for phonies like you.

  • It is so wonderful to hear a singer that puts a huge smile on my face from the first note to the last...

  • her voice is heavenly. i think it actually makes me want to stop singing permanently. or making any kind of noise, actually.

  • @cherryblossom141

Ack. Don't do that. The whole point of a voice like Audra McDonald's is to inspire you, not intimidate you.

  • SHE IS SO GOOD! I LOVE HER! <3

  • Audra McDonald is fantastic in everything she does!

  • Is this on DVD?

  • Godly.

  • I prefer this film version too over the stage version.

  • @jsg03jd me too:)

  • beautiful. just beautiful. :D

  • I think I like this song better than the stage song, "The Glamorous Life", and I like that song a lot, haha.

Also Audra McDonald ROCKED this song, her rendition got a tear or two out of my eye -- that's not too hard to do though! :P

Sondheim, gah. I hope one day to write half as well as him, though I probably won't!

  • This is amazing.

  • 3:31 !!! What an amazing song!!!!

  • You're only saying this to get a reaction. We don't need to defend Audra...she has more talent in her little finger than you could acquire in a lifetime. So please refrain from ridiculous comments. It only solidifies your pitiful ignorance. :) Kisses!

  • I absolutely adore this song, and it's fun to sing (even if I'll never sound as heavenly as Audra does). Audra McDonald is absolutely amazing, and in my opinion this is the best version of this song by leaps and bounds.

  • I'd be nervous too if I had to sing that song.

  • aww shes so sweet. and she sings beautifully...

  • really*

  • Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. Audra realy brings this song to life.

  • coincidentilly *i think i spelled that wrong* all the comments that she has gotten so far are GOOD :)

  • Arguably one of Sondheim's best songs. Sang beautifully by Audra McDonald.

  • She's amazing! I just love the way she sang this song.

  • I love her so much, but she seems a little nervous in this vid...

  • Really? The only thing I can see here that might pass for nervousness is her brilliant exploration of the character's inner turmoil. Or perhaps you are referring to her spoken introduction?

  • Yes I am referring to her spoken introduction. She seems very ill at ease about something. She is always so well spoken, but in this video she seems distracted.

  • yes she does- i think you're right

  • I think that was a part of the lead in to the song. I think she used the intro to get into the character of the song. :) I don't think she was nervous at all, just calling on her immense musical theater skills to give those of us (like me) an idea of what the song is trying to convey if we've never seen the show.

  • the introduction seems a little nervous. But who wouldnt be nervous about to sing a sondhiem song.

  • MetuNtr, I didn't think about that. That's what I do when I'm about to sing, so I understand that. Selendomono, I get that too! It's a lot of pressure to sing such great music.

  • Good for you! I had an English teacher who said you should write a term paper as if the reader has never read the book or story you're explicating. I don't think singing should be excluded from the same idea. Sing to us as if we've never seen the show or heard the song. :) I hope you go as far if not further than Audra!

  • Such grand advice, MetuNtr! Sing as if they've never heard...I'll take that to heart. :)

  • she is truly amazing...

  • It takes a truly amazing singer to handle these lyrics.

  • I love the way she emotes and brings the character to life. Beautiful sound.

  • Even though it is only in the film version, I think this may be my favorite thing to come out of A Little Night Music (the plot of which I don't care for), and one of my favorite Sondheim songs. And who better to sing it than Audra? She seems to have a special connection with songs about children - see also "I Won't Mind" - and of course her singing is just fantastic.

  • ugh i love audra, especially the bits in this where she belts every now and again. i wish she'd belt more, and higher :) but this is just perfection!

  • She does some belting in Dreamgirls (and does a lot of that wierd placement of hers which i call the audra mix)

  • oh i know! LOVE her in Dreamgirls! this is great though! it's what's made her famous :)

  • She is the best.

  • This women is amazind how can you not get her have you seen her in west side story.

  • you can get the sheet music to this in sondheim's book from songs he wrote for television and movies, i own it.

you have to pay attention to this or you'll miss that she isn't comedic like you said, she's covering up for her actual feelings which you see at the end. sondheim is BRILLIANT.

  • This Woman rocks! I didn't get her until I saw her in MASTER CLASS. She's the real deal. I heart Audra! XO

  • did she change her dress in this? Isn't she wearing a black dress in the very same concert? or am I wrong?

  • You are right...same dress...different color

  • she switched to the same style dress in a different color during intermission

  • I know that some people prefer the stage version, but I feel that the movie version is much more emotional. The stage version seems more comedic, but the movie version is heartbreaking, with a girl pretending that she is happy her mother is an actress, when all she wants is mother home

  • i love how you actually get this. you really are a sondheim lover.

  • thank you

  • I agree, the stage version gives a more ironically comedic look at it, but the film version is, as you said, heartbreaking. She pretends that she's proud of her mother not being 'ordinary' when all she wants is to be with her.

But Audra still brings it home.

  • do you know where you can find the movie version lyrics ?

  • Does anyone know where I can find the sheet music and accompaniment to this song?

  • its in an all sondheim book, maybe 2?

  • thank you!

  • shes so stunning

  • lovely. have never heard Audra McDonald before, but thought her rendition of this song was great!

  • Does anyone know where i can find lyrics to this song?

  • everytime i listen to her voice....i die alittle inside....in the good way....she is brilliant!!!

  • Oh my god, this is the most amazing thing i've ever seen. brilliant. absolutely brilliant.

  • i thought this was glamorous life by eden's crush or sheila E lol. oops!

  • This is seriously one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever seen her do.

  • I agree - She conveys the quiet desperation that the character feels. In " A Little Night Music" the daughter is forever making excuses for her absentee parent - desperately hoping that one day the fabulous actress will opt for school plays, recitals and Sunday breakfast with her daughter- Audra expresses the feeling of the character and the play - beautifully!

  • Audra's voice can make anyone melt!

  • This is a great song but I guess it doesn't quite suit the character. At least it gives her something to do! Also it kind of gives a different arc to the show. I rather like it, it should always be included.

  • I much prefer the stage version of this song to the film version, but Audra makes me like this version. Audra McDonald is amazin'.

  • Nice performance. The orchestration at the end in the original (the movie), with a flute rushing through notes, is much more exciting and nicer.

  • I love Audra! I cannot wait to go see 110! Everything about her, her incredible voice and her presence are just perfection!

  • If you get the chance could you please tape audra's interview with Tavis Smiley tonight. It's playing on PBS but not on a station where I am.

  • The best singer singing the best song. I like the smaller ensemble she performed with at American Songbook better though, Gene Lewin's drumming really drives the piece.

  • I think that without a doubt, audra mcdonald is the most talented singer I've heard latele. She is the perfect balance between talent, fantastic technique, and unbelievably passion and expression. Rock on, Audra.

  • Thank you Audra for having a selection, like this one, that is not predictable and/or cliche. I love when artists dig to find obscure material and breathe life into them. This maybe my favorite part of this concert. Bravo.

  • This was the version of the lyrics that Sondheim wrote for the ill-fated film version starring Liz Taylor.

  • hey can some one help me find the lyrics for this

  • It's published and in print. One of the Sondheim Songbooks.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this!
