  • Derek Roddy, Hellhammer and Nick Barker are the most creative drummers in extreme metal

  • @crusha747 oh shit, i forgot Inferno!

  • buddy I think your snare is broken.... cant hear that shit

  • So much for a snake breeder.

  • It's nice to see these guys also play jazz and shit. Him and Bittner both gave some insight into people who think that all they can play is blasts and double bass

  • George Kollias is more Sympathetic

    xD

  • @ransisua

Derek can't blast at 280bpm at all. Hellhammer can though.

Derek can't do everything. I am sick of people claiming he can. He is republican too you know, hates Obama ect. calls himself a world class drummer, he has a bad ego.

  • @theneongray who gives a shit if the dude is republican? that's just stupid judging him based on that. i'm a democrat but i understand that both sides make sense and i'm not dumb enough to say that anyone who doesn't feel the way i do about everything is an idiot.

  • @duddy74

You know why I care? I posted on Derek Roddy's message board for years and stopped when he wrote "Obama had nothing to do with Osama Bin Laden's capture" along with some other things Derek has said, "Calling himself a world class drummer, worth $10,000 per album" for session work. Derek is youtube famous, but he couldn't play better then Tim Yeung in Hate Eternal, he can't play better than Tony or George did with Nile, Dave Culross did better in Malevolent Creation...etc

  • @theneongray are you sure he said those things? music is music. do not involve it with other personal stuffs. Like him for his skills, not his views on politics.

  • this is one of those guys who beats blast beats to death..no pun intended

  • To all of the replies, ( and the one moron), he is a good jazz drummer, but I definitely wouldn't say he is near it's mastery. And Neil Peart is an awesome Prog Rock drummer, but I saw him play at the Buddy Rich memorial; his "Jazz" playing was good but not great. When I say master I don't mean being exceptional. There are so many exceptional drummers on Youtube, but masters? Not quite. Derek roddy is a master of Prog Metal and exeptional in Jazz, but comparing to the masters of Jazz....

  • George Killias would kick his ass

  • what is this?... no no no and NO

  • As much as I despise this type of playing, I could also never do it in a million years. I'd never WANT to but, definitely couldn't.

  • SICK!!!

    \m/_

  • DEREK IS SO SICK 666

  • @wolfslairDK Pfft!, Kollias destroys him!.

  • anybody know the same of the song he was playing? it sounded sweet! >_<

  • I met Derek a few years ago when he came to ASU to play a concert with our wind ensemble. Ya I know, weird. Anyway, he was THE coolest guy. I was in charge of making sure we had a kit for him. He said whatever we had was fine. Played incredibly on a relatively small kit with a pretty old DW double pedal. He did a clinic and was very clear, nice, and fun to listen to. What a gem of a person.

  • u guys are stupid to compare diffrent style of music... just enjoy the music, it's not about the blast speed or the swing feel.. u guys are stupid drummer who critise other drummer to make u look good or to make u feel better because u cant play like them

  • The reason why Roddy is amazing is because of his chops. He's gone beyond chops. His limb independence is easily at the level of any latin drummer. Each single limb can match what 99% of us can hardly do with two. Beyond that, the guy has an intellectual's approach to the drumset and is constantly pushing himself to go beyond what he can do. I'm typically one of those "traditionalists" who view groove as more important than chops, but Roddy can groove too, just look up his videos. He's a god.

  • to be fair... this is 100% chops, no feeling. If constant 'in your face' chops is your thing then fair enough, but it's not mine.

  • The feet are doing some awesome shit, the hands aren't.

  • Isn't that the beat for most of Justin Beiber's tunes?

  • meanwhile dozens of army vets are taking cover in fear of automatic gunfire

  • A lot of people blast but few really get that legitimate blast sound like Derek Roddy does.

  • It would be okay if he hit me.... cause any thing he hits sounds amazing xD - DR is my fav drummer of all time!

  • i really love the left china, which is it?!

  • imagine of dream theater chose him for their drummer!!!!!

  • His hair brings head and shoulders to mind

  • i really respect derek roddy and i really understand it needs A HELL of practice to play that fast but in this video at least, i see almost nothing but speed =\

  • O_O

  • i hate metal and this aint amazing.

  • @dinoarms then why did you watch it?

  • actually most of the "top jazz drummers" can and do play blasts and double kick well, and though they usually don't have as much power as "metal drummers", they have better technique so they play more efficiently. Not saying all jazz drummers have better technique than all metal drummers, but does qualify as a justified generalization.

  • that last riff he plays too, is sick.

  • wait...two bass drums, and a double kick pedal?

  • @Str8Faced

    i know right???

  • @Str8Faced the left kick has a single pedal on it. It's a smaller size and tuned differently just to ad more sounds to his kit :)

  • @TommyOwnzU The pointlessness of it outweighs the tiny difference in sound you'd get, which no one but the sound guy would recognize anyway.

  • @Str8Faced don't complain to me, not my kit

  • I can assure you, Jazz drummers can't do what he does, just as he probably couldn't do what jazz drummers can.... People are complete idiots in thinking that jazz drummers can do EVERYTHING. I assure you once more that they cannot blast at 260 bpm. That is just an ignorant traditionalist statement. Seriously quit with the "play all styles" bullshit because no one can be a master of all. A person can be a jack of all trades, but a master of none....

  • @ThePrutrude Actually, to your statement. Derek is a jack of all trades, But is a master of extreme styles of music. He started out as a blues/jazz trained musician and turned into the icon that he is now in the metal genre. It is true that no-one can master all the genres in the world but you can be damn good at alot of them and in my opinion, derek is damn near that dude.

  • @ThePrutrude What about Mike Mangini? :P

  • @ThePrutrude an optimistic 12 year old... i remember when i was immature...

  • @ThePrutrude Very true.

Except Derek can do what jazz drummers do. He said himself, heavy metal was the for the most part the last style of music he fell in love with, and watching a lot of other videos of him you'll see he plays jazz stuff excellently.

  • @ThePrutrude why do you think that your so right and its impossible for someone like derek roddy to also be good at jazz. it defiantly is possible to master more than one thing. look at Neil Peart. hes more of a prog rock drummer or whatever but at the end of almost every solo he plays like a 2 minute jazz part. while using stuff like double bass. thats just one example and maybe you should be more open minded

  • @ThePrutrude derek is a jazz master too... he actually studied jazz for many years even before he was really into the intense metal scene

  • @ThePrutrude Actually, you said he probably can't do what jazz drummers do. He learned jazz drumming first i believe.....

  • @ThePrutrude Not trolling but, if there is one who can be a master of all, Im pretty sure it just might be "Mike Mangini"(considering he's a prof at Berklee)

  • Comment removed

  • @ThePrutrude i am prty sure he played some jazz before metal.. anyway, metal drummers have a shot at doing jazz. no jazz guy will be able to match the speed and stamina of death metal players.

  • @ThePrutrude You obviously have never seen Derek play jazz then, I know this man personally and I can say he is a very diverse drummer. You may not see that because most of the video's and stuff online are him performing drum clinics and shows so he plays what he is known for... metal.

  • @420Nitsua Totally Agree!

  • @ThePrutrude except Hellhammer, who can blast that fast and do Jazz, Trym also

  • @ThePrutrude

I have seen Derek tear it up in the jazz realm. He told me he started with jazz/fusion and came to metal last. He is a very versatile player. Anyone who has met and hung out with thw guy knows this. In fact, after hanging with D a few times (he played on my kit at home once) I'm even more enthralled with him as a musician.

  • @ThePrutrude "A jack of all trades" - I've never heard anything more stupid in my whole life! You are talking like if you can blast at 260 bpm it makes you a master of metal. Tell you what - Some of the fastest swing jazz goes in 260 bpm and the Gravity-Blast technique comes from jazz. But it isn't about how fast you can play. It's about HOW you play! As a musician i'd say: You're a master of music in the moment you can make it sound good. No matter how few or how many genres you play!

  • @gust0743 can i get to see a video of 260 bpm jazz?

  • @ThePrutrude Hey, don't be talkin' smack about Mike Portnoy, He's the best drummer on the planet. No one is faster or better and he can play anything, ANYTHING YOU CAN THROW AT HIM.. You can see it on this RARE drum solo vid. (tongue in cheek, folks. Get a grip)

    Couldn't agree more.Great post!

  • 2:13 - 2:15 super superb

  • He's got great sound and style but his sticking is sloppy as hell.

  • @Primal67060 in the end, he played at the mdf, and youre here criticizing on youtube! well done genius!

  • @dimeabb Everyone is entitled to their opinion. That's part of the reason the comment section exists. Genius? I hope, because I'd much rather be a smart ass than a dumb ass.

  • While I love Death Metal and I think Derek Roddy is a great Death Metal drummer, I have never seen him drum anything other then Death Metal, so I can't actually say he is a 'great' drummer. For me, a great drummer can play any style and Derek Roddy hasn't shown that, I don't even know if he knows what ghost-note is, because in his Death Metal style ghost-notes aren't used... :P

Point is: plenty of jazz drummers could do what he did in this video, but can Derek play jazz?

  • @Kholdaimon Actually Jazz drums cant do what death metal drummers do, and i do have proof. During one of derek's videos he is playing a DW and two Jazz musicians try to do a simple blast beat. . . they failed. They also couldnt play 16th notes at 200... also Derek plays tons of other things, go actually check it out. His other band is called Traumady. Plus Death Metal drumming takes its own kind of skill, that other genres dont have. Dont say any jazz musican can do this, cause they cant.

  • @Kholdaimon watch the NAMM 2009 axis booth, he shows diversity here. You can't judge a drummer based on their repertoire alone...

  • @Kholdaimon there is no drummer that can play every style of drumming to its fullest just doesnt exist

  • @Kholdaimon look up derek roddy jazzcore

  • OMG !!

  • He should write a song called "raping the drumset"

  • This is embarrasing...especially with all those jazz drumming experts there

  • @eurologic buddy rich would be proud of him dude

  • I hate Dream Theater forever for not hiring him.

  • @Cannibal660 His blasts beats and extreme style are amazing but, to be fair, it doesn't really belong in a Prog Metal band.

  • Forever I thought metal drumming didnt take any talent. And then I watched this... My bad...

  • @paulgillard7 ha dude, u dont even know. ive been playing for about 13 years and its a challenge sumtimes.

  • he hit the floor toms so hard that he farts

  • now this guy has balls

  • dude! the Sonor Drums now know what's speed thanks to Derek.

  • this dude is crazy fast!! wow!

  • Whoever says metal doesn't take talent, obviously doesn't know what their talkin about.

  • @devildrummer0109 a-fucking-goddam MEN!

  • @devildrummer0109

SO TRUE!!!!! I have a friend who has played drums for 9 years and hates metalcore/death metal. He says that I like it because it takes no talent. I NEED to show him this video.

  • @devildrummer0109

SO TRUE!!!!! I have a friend who has played drums for 9 years and hates metalcore/death metal. He says that I like it because it takes no talent. I NEED to show him this video.

  • @SuperNotNoob tell your friend that he is a moron. being in a metal band definitely takes talent. i hate jazz with a passion but i know it takes alot of talent. people that say metal takes no talent are just ignorant pieces of shit

  • @ImmortalSpammer i just showed him this video yesterday, and 30 seconds into it he said "that's it?" and showed me a neil peart drum solo that i've seen a million times.... u just can't convince that guy that neil peart isn't the best!

  • @SuperNotNoob neil peart is one of the best ever. but metal drumming also takes talent

  • @ImmortalSpammer it wasn't even a fair comparison! he's comparing a solo to a beat

  • @devildrummer0109 amen man, alot of my friends say harsh vocals are jsut screaming in to a mic and the drums are just shit....they legitly have no idea what they are talking about, takes sooooo much practice and talents to be able to be in a DM band.

  • he should have tuned his snare higher so we can hear those insane blast beats!! (all though, at those speeds, i dont think it would make much of a difference...)

  • Dammit I was gonna post a needs more cowbell comment haha

  • what's the name of the song?

  • 2:13 Reminds me of Tony Royster O_O

  • I love the left china

  • You see... Anyone can play as fast as him... Just as long as you can slow down time and be genetically enhanced to have super human reflexes.

  • needs more cowbell...

  • 2:15 - 2:19 Oh my...

  • @Xanhast641 Still wondering how he did that.

  • 83 people have ear and eye problems

  • Derek was one of the drummers that audiotioned for Dream Theater! Go Derek!

  • is that i moon gel i see? LOL

  • Fucking amazing!

I'm surprised all the cymbals didn't break

  • for all the JJ haters out there.... if slipknots music called for this style of blasting, i have not a doubt in my mind that joey would do a respectable job of tearing it to pieces exactly the way he DESTROYS every slipknot song. Jordison is as accurate as a heat-seeking missile, and his hands were made to tear flesh from bone, hes a killing machine, IMHO.

  • @colmcb311 Well you honest opinion is completely void simply because you think JJ can hang (even if he did play this type of music). So shut the fuck up. JJ is a complete amateur drummer compared to Derek. There isn't even a comparison for me to give. It's that bad. He sucks. Your opinion sucks.

  • @Monoxzidex Ok well, shithead, take a look at anything Joey Jordison has played. Especially in the studio. That's right, that just happened. Same things that Roddy plays at clinics, in solos, and even in his book. I hope to God that you aren't ruining the sonic landscape of any poor shitcan bar with your complete ignorance and lack of drumming knowledge. You sicken me. Please give up on life and kill yourself. Now.

  • @colmcb311 That is a typical response of some 12 year old maggot (sp? lol). Continue to jerk off to your Joey Jordison poster brah. Doesn't change the fact he is still a absolute horrible drummer. Only reason he has notoriety is because retards like you talk about him is because his shitty band got played on the radio. He sucks. His videos are horrible. You are a fail troll.

  • As much as I hate metal (and I mean I hate it), this dude is a monster. 10x better than Joey.

  • @gtrocksyosocks You should not try the mainstream "metal", cause you'll regret... There are a lot of underground metal bands all around the world making stand out this genre of music... Although everyday is a little harder to inovate, there's still too much to listen to... Don't be shy to music.

  • @gtrocksyosocks metal hates you. if you hate, then what the FUCK about how one metal drummer is "10x better" than ANY DRUMMER?!?!

  • @colmcb311 Hey buddy, calm down. People have different tastes of music. People have different ways of thinking and opinions. Just because some one doesn't like the style of music you like, doesn't mean you have to blow up on them like a nuke. And remember! Jesus loves you. :)

  • @gtrocksyosocks haha sry bro, I was just really upset by that idiot monozxide666XxxX or whatev his sn is.

  • @colmcb311 You're cool man, it's all good.

  • @colmcb311 There is no 666XxxXX straight edge poser satanist garbage on the my SN. Another fail. Just like Mr. Joey.

  • @zilgrerem Joey* and to be honest, your opinion's your opinion. although, everyone knows Jordison sucks :D

  • What the fuck just happened?!

  • Le Vrai Possédé (y)

  • some girl told me hes faster in bed then he is on the drums

  • damn.... i mean i don't listen to shit like this regularly, it's not really my cup of tea. but god DAMN he is fast. this is probably the third time i've watched this and it finally occurred to me... it's gotta be difficult to play that kind of shit to a studio track! he's perfectly in sync with the music the whole time. mega kudos.

  • Who the hell is Joey Jordison.. '~'

  • 83 people love joey jordison.

  • @ghostexplor3r28 He's a poser fag. Never speak of him in comments of a video with a masterful extreme metal drummer such as Derek.

  • why does he have a double pedal to one bass drum but has the other bass drum with a beater

  • @jesse17ful Two different bass drum sounds:D

  • Великий и ужасный!

  • 1:21 whats that pedal he kicks once on the left?

  • @thickpooxbox360, that would be a sonar single bass pedal he has hooked up to what looks like an electric kick drum pad. the pedals themselves are extremely cheap. like 50 or so dollars

  • WTF? He's using a double pedal on a double kick kit?

  • @FlavioDrums he's bass drums are tuned differently

  • @ryantksdrums - Makes sense...but I actually thought that he used regular double bass! Thanks for the reminder! ;)

  • @FlavioDrums Actually his bass drums are different sizes. He uses regular double bass for his metal band, but his fusion project he needs the smaller sized one.

  • @FlavioDrums. his left bass drum is a different size so he gets a different sound out of it. :)

  • @killu626 - Thanks dude! I'm a drummer and I didn't thought about it! I've just assumed that he would use a "regular" two double bass kit! Cheers to all the drummers! \m/

  • is it just me or does the sound quality make his low floor tom sound like a fart...

  • @TheBigAP13

dude I can't stop laughing when i read you comment..

  • @TheBigAP13

It's the microphone. Mine had the same problem when i was recording for the first time

  • @TheBigAP13 i think the mikro is damaged...

  • @TheBigAP13 thats because his low tom is a smash tom. it rattles in the shell to produce that sound. it has a little carrier thing the head sits on so it can move up and down but still have tension

  • @TheBigAP13 I think the microphone fucked up xD

  • @TheBigAP13 I think it's cuz of the quality of the vid, too low sound overpowers the codec or something...

Still, would be pretty epic just to mic his arse :p

  • Comment removed

  • @TheBigAP13 sounds like a bad mic or a one legged cable on the last floor tom to me ...

  • i feel sorry for the idiots who disliked this video

  • hes fast but has no taste whatsoever. ofcourse im jealous of his speed, i wish i could play that fast..but thats not all i would do if i could. he couldnt groove to save his life

  • @AsG1989 You obviously haven't watched much of his other videos because Derek Roddy can accomplish almost any type of style when it comes to drums

  • @hexadislexa1 but when your do mostly one thing you become ok at other things..playing fast and loud all the time takes away from your dynamics

  • @AsG1989 absolutely right speed can be accomplished it jus ttakes time and practice i cant stand dethmetal drumming (melodic death metal kicks ass though the drumming that is :)).

  • @OGTheDemon I love death metal drumming! Its got some power behind it that can be meet!! Why cany you stand it. . . and i mean that in the most curious way possible, no anger here. melo death, just bores me. I dont know why.

  • @thisisformusiconly Because more often this is more entertaining -> watch?v=XnmoBS8CtFU

  • @redoubt9000 I saw that video. I mean its cool and i understand the skill envolved, but it just didnt entertain me. here check out Derek Roddy vs Eric Moore. . . its sooooo cool.

  • that kit looks ergonomic.

  • Not sayin he doesn't have skill, but best in the world??? Absolutley not. If anyone can claim that title rightnow it would be gavin harrison hands down... Ptree for life mo fuckaz

  • A lot of people say that there is no such thing as the best drummer in the world. I truly believe that derek roddy is the best drummer in the world without a doubt. Joey Jordison is a great drummer but derek roddy is truly amazing.

  • when i saw this vid, i was not impressed only that i dont care for this style of music.

but then i saw another vid of him playing jazz fusion.....oh man!!

    awesome player!

  • @34jazzman This is what makes me angry about jazz players, always so condesending on genres of music that dont play jazz. Its fine if you dont like it but be sure to completement it, it is just as hard to play as jazz.

  • what songs is he playing, or is it an improv?

  • @chaostftk its the greater equanimity by serpenths rise. you can download it from derek roddy's website

  • Okay,a good drummer just doesnt do a gravity blast and hit cymbals randomly...

Wanna see a REAL DRUMMER, Look up Cobus...

  • @TheClintMan72 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! good one.

  • _ _ O

  • ='(

  • go on the axis percussion website and it has his signature pedals

  • I love the fact the he's got 2 single pedals and a double! That's so awesome!

  • Just watching his vids to click: Thumbs up XD

  • inferno is the best

  • @Mr3l337 nope.

  • his fills are shit...

  • 2.14 to 2.20 is worth the entrance fee alone

  • what is that song his playing with? It's sounds freaking awesome

  • can someone please show me where to get his band's music from?

  • @FORTY848 go to a musicstore, buy a CD

  • @VinylIsForever i meant a website, i have no money

  • does anyone know what china derek is using to the left of him?

  • @55715835 20" Mb20 Rock China

  • if you don't like this then you can't handle the awesomeness that is metal

  • I cannot express how good puma shoes are for drumming haha the racecar drivers and clubsters are on to something!
