i think ur wheels might be misaligned. I know i was trying something similar out, and if its not straight, the dolly will try to correct itself every few units of distance.
but urs seem like its jittery and shaky the entire time. Those wheels look brand new tho.... I am hesitant to use my old skateboard wheels because they might have small holes in them that might make the dolly jittery
Hey there. Just saw this. I wanted to just chime in about some of the vibration. I know on my dolly, if I have the center post on my tripod raised AT ALL, almost every little vibration or bump is totally amplified. With it down, it is smooth. Just food for thought. Not sure if yours was raised or not, but wanted to add that as a possible suggestion.
Also - Here's what I did to avoid the gap problem between tracks: I have 1 inch PVC with thick walls as my track. I took a 3/4 inch thin-walled PVC pipe used my connection pieces Now, as is, they are too big to fit into the inside of the 1 inch PVC, so I ripped a 1/8 inch along the length of the piece (I used 6 inches) and that allowed me to squeeze the pipe enough to fit it inside the 1 inch PVC. This makes for a solid, pretty snug joint. Works for me. Just wanted to pass this along.
@SeeBillyRun Yes, but it doesn't make a difference. In fact, the tape holds the pipes closer together for less of a gap. I haven't used this dolly's multiple sections ever since the creation of this video. Rather than investing the time and money to find a solution, I'm just going to wait until a point where I can buy an "Eazy Dolly".
It's called a dolly-zoom. The camera started out far away from the subject, all the way zoomed in. Then, while dollying towards the subject, you zoom out at the same rate. This way, it appears that the only thing changing is the field of view.
Hey man, just curious - did you consider using roller blade type wheels instead of skateboard wheels? As vibration in some sections is quite noticable... I think the softer rubber compound of roller blade wheels would be more forgiving. Were the skateboard wheels new, or used, when you fitted them? Cheers man, nice video
I'm not quite sure what type of wheels they are. They were supplied to use by a police shooting range. Apparently the wheels are used to move the targets around. They look a lot like skateboard wheels, so I can only assume that they are. Since we were already getting those wheels for a good deal, there wasn't a way we could really change our mind. I'll look into roller blade wheels. Thanks again.
Hi again, I too made a similar designed dolly a few days ago. At first I fitted some cheap roller blade wheels, but experienced vibration. Upon closer inspection the wheels appeared to be 1-2mm out of concentricity. Anyway, so I went and bought 8 new "soft" skateboard wheels and bearings, fitted them, and now I get no vibration at all. Runs on the PVC rails like a dream! if you're interested check out my dolly test videos :) cheers dude and keep making videos for youtube!
So far, we have nothing that actually secures the tripod to the dolly. If necessary, we'll install 90-degree brackets for each of the legs to fit into.
It IS an external camera mic. The Rode VideoMic. What the problem was is the it was VERY windy. We'll be ordering a "dead cat" windscreen as soon as we can afford it. That will significantly reduce wind noise.
mmmm the vieo is shaky when it hit the union of the tubes...

its not too bad but it is a bit shakey...i'd say just get two long pieces of pvc instead of hooking them together...

It's good but why is it so jittery every once an a while.
disasterupload 2 years ago
All signs seem to point to the skateboard wheels. Once possible, we will have to replace those with rollerskate wheels, which are smoother.
honeybeever 2 years ago
i think i know wat the problem is
the footage is only jerky when it goes over the areas where you join the segments of the pipes together
Roller Blade wheels are quite smoother (and less noisy)
jahanzebk91 2 years ago
I agree. After watching this video twice I would say that's the issue.
@honeybeever have you tried using it w/o the tape? and have you added new wheels?

Try putting a bag of concrete or sand on the dolly. Makes for a fluid/less jittery dolly.

horrible audio in the beginning. you need an external camera mic.

honeybeever 2 years ago
seriously? the rode VideoMic?
maybe you should increase the audio gain, even though it would increase wind noise. It would also increase voice volume pretty well.
sonicballer8888 2 years ago
I turned down the input a lot because the wind was making the mic levels peak at above 12db, and I thought that was bad.
