Why is it always American slagging off the British. My family moved from Ireland to London in the 70's there is no conflict. And while im at it, typing words into an on-line gaelic translator does not make you look more irish.
i get into trouble for loving this song.heard the PROPER words for the first time at the start of this year.True blue nose but love this song, dont care who disagrees with me.
No matter whos version I hear....If they have honest heart in it I tear up of full on cry at the beauty of this amazing song. The hurt the Irish went thru at the hands of the rich and greedy. To feed the children Im sure many here would have rebeled against the crown. Minus the 7 cowards afraid of the trip to Botnay bay.
I am fascinated by this song and the story. I am an Asian but I think the message this song gives applies across the board to all who are opressed and wrongly imprisoned
To start I'm not Irish. I'm sure there is some Irish in me somewhere along with the Scot and everything else but this song is absolutely great. Paddy Reilly has a voice that one could listen to forever. I also love The Town I loved so Well.
God bless my great-great-great uncle Matthew Hourigan, unjustly exiled to Australia. There he found a new life despite the cruel circumstances that took him away from Tipperary.
Long live the souls of those brave few who died freeing Ireland from the hands of the English. I hold no grudges but I still think our Country Men deserve respect. Thank you and may your souls rest eternal for your sacrifice!
Michael got shipped to the prisons in Australia when Australia was being colonised by england. he was seen as a Convict. Hense the prison ship waiting in the bay. There was no more room in the english prisons, and australia was a "new" country, which is wy they shipped thousands of convicts there. just thought if tell you this.
Poignantly beautiful, and reminds us of the desperation of a young man who tried to get a morsel of food for his babies but was severely punished by cruel merciless rulers in England.
@josparkes1 actually, Michael got shipped to the prisons in Australia when Australia was being colonised by england. he was seen as a Convict. Hense the prison ship waiting in the bay. josparkes & TheArchieBell, the Irish songwriter Pete St John composed the lyrics and melody of The Fields of Athenry. I heard an interview he gave last week on RTE Radio, when he said he passed through Athenry in the 70's and it seemed a lonely place to him then and he had been reading about famine times in Ireland in general, when the idea struck him and he wrote the song.
I have said all the best things about this song and the singer, but I think this is just WOW, and fantastic and everything else out of this world ! ! !
Gorgeous singing, wonderful voice, and such a beautiful tune too. Who wrote this song, and who wrote the tune, and did the musical arrangements, they are just W O W ! !
My word, did he really, he already has my vote for being one of the best Irish voices on the planet. Is there no limit to what Paddy Reilly can do. WOW. I love this song !
to patsgothedistance yeah we brits would if you moronic fuckers didnt keep sending misiles after us what is it about a vehicle with a huge red cross on that you dont understand fighter pilots they couldnt operate a fucking calculator murdering cunts
this is a lovely song the dubliners do a great version too and to robbiekeanelfc good on ya mate not sure if you irish english chinese or martion makes no difference spot on no nation in the world are like the yanks war mongering bastards they have inflicted more harm and suffering than any nation on earth because they are a superpower ha ha
cock off you Amrican bastard and free the Indians you abused beat, tortured robed and murdered, give them their country back you fucking cunt. Free the Native Americans now JUSTICE the IRA the Indian Republican Army !
I love this song and I am British and not wishing to stir any more bad feelings about the conflict does anyone know the name of a song which was about a british soldier who threw himself on a grenade (or bomb, i am not sure) I think to save some Irish children. I believe it was based on a true incident.
One can only hope that we have moved away from those black days, gone but not forgotten.
A beautiful song and Paddy Reilly does the best version of it. And not really a political song at all. It's a lament. A ballad but politics has very little do do with it.
I take the same view as yourself, although im not Irish. A local pub last wk was playing Irish ballads and i asked if they had this track, to which i was promptly replied 'we dont play rebel music in here!' wtf? it doesnt need rebelious connections it can stand on its own as a classic.
This song was played at my Granddad's funeral, we live in Scotland but my Granddad was Irish so he loved this song. Makes me cry everytime I hear it. I am currently trying to download it, if u no how 2 download it then plz reply

It's great singing by the master himself. a voice like a bell in the clear sky. Wonderful
