chrissyteen, all books have moments that are less than perfect but I'm afraid you're outvoted on this one. The book is a wonder. That said, I am assigning the book to my students and it's entirely possible that being forced to read the book will dull their interest. I fear that I'm killing the joy of reading... by making them read. I hope that didn't happen to you and I hope that doesn't happen to my students but I'll let you all know. Happy reading, chrissyteen. Read another book and enjoy it.
I had to read this book for my contemporary literature class. And it was really good. I enjoyed it quite much. Dont worry about killing the joy of reading.
Personally, I loved this book; it opened up a whole new perspective on life.
Is religion just a bunch of "spice" that makes life meaningful and interesting because reality is too cruel and meaningless for us to accept?
Or is religion too beautiful, unbelievably disprovable, inexplainable, plausible, and probable for us to accept it as reality, thus we believe in the "yeastless" story?
@LinearCarp1209 If anything, life should make religion meaningful. But we would be best off to cast aside superstition and dogma as a source of inspiration, and instead, find meaning from within.
@DevonWhorton I'll disagree religion is superstition. 'meaning within' doesn't mean much from a non-religious point of view. All the gold in the world wouldn't make one happy, and some say thats just psychology and brain chemistry. As I see it, if life is analyzed down to the quantum level, one asks 'why' to everything, and the only faith u have is in the senses, u could tell urself ur happy. But belief doesn't really change truth, and truth is found with faith beyond what our senses tell us.
@LinearCarp1209 It's hard to really understand what you were trying to say, and what relevance it had to what I was saying. All I was trying to say is that you do not need religious beliefs, unfounded ideas, to find meaning in life. When I say religion, I mean, the idea there is a divine creator, an afterlife, the concept of prayer, belief in miracles, etc. There are plenty of spiritually fulfilling ideas throughout the cosmos which can be proven, we don't need to make anything up.
@DevonWhorton it doesn't make sense to me that you would believe 'spiritual' fulfillment when you don't believe in a religion as you define it. Do you believe in a 'soul'? if by spiritual you mean 'psychological' i see where ur coming from. aside from that, I don't believe religion to be 'unfounded'. anyone can make meaning without religion. but my belief is that religion (and thus my reason my for religion) is that religious meaning is the only lasting meaning for humanity.
@LinearCarp1209 I do not believe in a soul. I suppose you could call it psychological fulfillment, that's what most non-religious people mean when they use the word "spiritual". What does it mean to say religion is the only lasting meaning for humanity? It is only meaningful if it is true. If you don't mind me asking, what is your religion? Within every religion there are elements which are unfounded in reason or evidence. If something is not true, it cannot be the basis for meaning.
@DevonWhorton Christian (not catholic). I will agree that (as far as I have considered it) there comes a point w/religion where there must be faith and maybe no solid evidence. But I don't believe I could have 'psych' fulfillment w/o religion, specifically Christianity. Thats because I don't (or shouldn't) place the highest importance on the fading world. I believe in eternity in heaven, and I find fulfillment in that, but also in the truth that Christs way is the right way.
@LinearCarp1209 I didn't believe I could have 'psych' fulfillment when I was a Christian, either. What do you mean by 'fading world'? Sounds pessimistic. If you believe Christ is the right way, does that mean you have looked into Buddhas way & decided it was wrong? Or the ways of other religions? How do you know Heaven is real, other than what is said in a book? Christianity contains a lot of contradiction. For example, God is jealous when pride is a sin, wrathful & benevolent.
@DevonWhorton This world isn't 'worthless', it just isn't the most 'worthy'. I haven't researched other religions at length. But they all seem to rely on TOO vague an idea of 'salvation' and on how 'good' is 'good enough'. If ur referring to Ex 20:5, God is jealous b/c of his covenant "marriage" w/Isreal, analogous to how a husband/wife being jealous for the other, when said other gives more devotion to something else. I'd say more but I can't fit it here :P
@LinearCarp1209 ...and Mohammad's way is the wrong way, and Buddha's way is the wrong way, and Krishna's way is the wrong way. Is that what you want to say, innit?
does anyone else think that dev patel (jamal in "slumdog millionaire") would be a good pi patel if they made a movie? very cool that they have the same last name anyway!
did anyone else get the allusion to the bible when richard parker jumped over him in a fleeting furred rainbow? HE WAS TALKING ABOUT NOAHS ARK! when god sent the rain bow to noah who was on the ship with animals. i literally just go that. how trippy!
the idea behind the animal metaphors is to make you think
is it acceptable to kill if necessary?
are we all animals really?
is society the only thing stopping such horrid acts?
are humans to be considered above animals because of our morals, and are we still fit for this superiority if we still kill- but only after a delayed period?
very good questions. my take on it is humans are indeed animals, because we kill not only animals but other humans every day. what I find interesting between the two stories is at least with the story of the animals, there are two beings that actually end up getting along! with the humans, everyone but pi dies. as far as society goes, it is a two sided blade. people in power are trying to stop homicides while at the same time are bombing other countries, most of the time in the name of God
How fucken strange was the carnivorous island.. It was insane!
I just finished the book 5 mins ago, and its veeeeery late in the night/morning. But I can't sleep. Its kinda sad how the tiger just left without a glance.
Lol at the friggen teeth in the plant.. :O And at the holes of fresh water, how can you think up that shit?
But the ending makes you think.. Especially after that physco rampage cook. Ghastly business.
I loved this book! My favorite. Liked the story about the poor baker, and offcourse the ending was amazing. This Flash demo was actually what made me read it. Stumble upon it when looking for cool flas sites..
i'm sorry, conflicting opinion, but i REALLY disliked the book ...
maybe it was because i had to read it for school. but i had heard it was good, so i went into it with an open mind ... but i was blown away too, by how boring it was!
sorry, that's just me, if you liked it, that's awesome, but it took me like 6 weeks to read it because i just could get into it. Suffice it to say, my favourite part was the ending.
What made me read this book was that it was a story that "would make you believe in God." I couldn't see that angle though. Instead, I gathered that the point of the book was that Truth is relative. I love the book though. The best I read this year.
I think it's because you have to take a leap of faith to believe in the story with the tiger in it, and that leap of faith is comparable to that which religious people take. So he's saying if you can have faith in the truth of this story (the animal version) it proves that it's possible to have faith in God.
im pretty sure the animal version wasnt the truth. There were two stories we heard, and after he was interviewed by the japanese men, he says, the end result is the same, i lost all of my family, anyways, its whatever you want to hear. This choice is how he feels about religion. It is all about loving god, no matter what
I finished this book last night, and it blew me away. I advise anyone who is reading this book to just hold out (not that one needs to "hold out", as it's gripping) and finish it naturally. amazing book. i thought the thing with the three religions was actually really inspiring, and i'm agnostic. it was so strange that someone could believe in all three so strongly in such an innocent way, without all of the corruptness and ignorance that is seen all over today.
