  • This is Toccata on O Fili et Filiae by Lynwood Farnam

  • Well the base of it is anyway

  • I found out I actually own this piece. It is in one of Gordon Young's books.

  • @octavegeigen4 Sorry, but this is NOT the Farnam O Fili et Filiae. There are some quotes from it, but it's not the piece. Sounds like an improvisation.

  • @ATLKapellmeister Well I obviously know that NOW. Two years ago I didn't. And if you'll notice, I also said "Well the base of it is anyway"

  • Real nice! Awesome organ! My grandparents might move to Indianapolis (it's unofficial, but it's still a possibility). My grandfather is an Episcopal priest, so he does interim rector jobs at churches, meaning he goes to a new church every year or two. The next church he goes to might be Saint Paul's Episcopal church in Indianapolis, you probably already know about the 90 rank Casavant inside!

  • I have played this instrument a few times and it is definitely one of the more fun instruments to play!

  • The Saint Paul's organ? It certainly has a fantastic stoplist and it sounds nice form the recordings I've heard, new Casavants are beautiful anyway. My grandfather is moving there this Friday and will work there as the Interim Rector. Are the organs at the Episcopal Cathedral very good? What about at the Cathedral of the Scottish Rite? If I visit them, I want to know what organs are worth getting a chance to play! :D

  • I was refering to the organ in this video which is at Second Presbyterian. As far as Episcopal churches in Indy, I have only played the Helmuth Wolf and the Taylor & Boody instruments at Christ Church downtown. As for Cassavants...not a huge fan of them. They are like the Chevrolets of pipe organs (and I am not talking about the Corvette variety of Chevys, either!). They get you from point A to point B but rarely offer something unique and dazzling for the trip.

  • Casavant's instruments from the 1950's-1980's are dreadful, but I think they're getting back on top of things. Their pre 1950's instruments are wonderful too. I think the instruments I've heard of their from the past 10 years are wonderful.

Christ Church is the cathedral isn't it? It has the 70 rank in the chancel and 53 rank in the gallery?

Do you know anything about the Scottish Rite organ?

  • I know lots of people at Casavant. Yes, they are undergoing some changes and improvement to go from good to great. They tell me that the organ going into Metropolitan Baptist in Largo, MD is going to redefine Casavant for years to come. The instrument is finished and is just waiting for the church to fix their financial problems so that their new building can be completed so the instrument can be shipped and installed.

  • BTW: if you're going to be in Indianapolis, you should play some of the Goulding & Wood instruments there. They have become one of the premiere builders of the American Tradition pipe organs. Their St. Luke Methodist organ in Indy will make you weep its so good. And their rebuild of the East Liberty Presbyterian 4m/140r Aeolian-Skinner in Pittsburgh will leave you gobsmacked!!! I was lucky that was my practice organ in college (pre-rebuild, tho).

  • I read on Casavant's website about the Largo organ, I like the Resonance idea. The console to the organ I play was built for a Moller organ in the 1940's, it has reversibles for 'Pedal to Great' 'Pedal to Swell' and "Pedal to Choir', of course, now they don't do anything, but at one time they did something. Oh East Liberty's organ is incredible without a doubt, you certainly were lucky!

Well, I certainly hope I'll visit my grandparents in Indianapolis this summer, I'll have to look up St. Luke.

  • Well, as you know their Resonance is a reinterpretation of Cavaille-Coll resonance divisions from organs like St. Sulpice Paris and St. Ouen in Rouen. The reinterpretation comes from the fact that not each and every manual is permanently coupled to it! The console on the organ I now play has programmable reversibles. I can program anything which can be reversible from couplers to speciffic stops so if a piece is complicated and I can't make the stretch in time I just have to have a free thumb!

  • I agree. St. Lukes will make you literally cry it is soooo wonderful. I had video's of it on here but the church asked me to remove them for copyright infringement issues.

  • lol good luck getting into Scottish Rite Cody. It's a member only organization. It's a 5 manual organ that almost every organist in the city drools over..they forbid anyone to play that is not a Guild member. It's not a church. As for Christ church, yes they have a 4 manual French style tracker in the chancel and a 2 manual tracker in the gallery. haha 54 ranks?? no wayyy. maybe 20 or so. I agree. I'm not too much of a fan of Casavant's organs either in that time period.

  • Well, AllenOrganCrazy, I hate to tell you, but you're wrong. The Gallery Organ at Christ Episcopal Cathedral on Monument Circle in Indianapolis is not 20 ranks nor is it two manuals. I have played that organ more than 10 times as I tend to love Taylor and Boody instruments for Bach repretoire. It is indeed 3 manuals (hauptwerk, brustwerk and ruckpositiv) and pedal and has 37 voices with 53 ranks of pipes. Also, I found getting into Scottish Rite very easy by being nice to the facility mgr!

  • Ok yes, I apologize I mixed the gallery organ with another I have played...yes it is indeed 3 manuals and 50 some ranks. But, in my opinion and from many opinions I've heard, it's not worth the time and trouble to play.

  • I mean the one at Scottish Rite, by the way. I realize I mad it sound like I was referring to the one at Christ Church. sorry.

  • sounds like something forte would play. i like it!!!

  • Sounds like a spin-off of Lynnwood Farnam's "Toccata on O Filii et Filiae".
