I have one of those made by Stanley in the 50's from things I got between my brother and I from my dad's estate. 50+ yrs old and it still works like new. I havent seen these in stores but then I havent looked either. There's also a type you push and it fires but the only kind I see new are for center punching anymore, the ones I have are 1960's vintage. Of course the quality of the old ones is much better than the low grade Chinese tools out now but for a DIY even a cheapo tool will work.
Really! I had no idea they have been around so long. I believe they are making a comeback thou I have seen many in the last couple years showing up on job sites again! Thanks +++Bob
Yep old type tools are coming back as "new" in a lot of markets but it's too bad they are low quality junk from overseas rather than good quality like they should be. Remember Yankee screwdrivers? Saw one in a catalog the other day (forget which one, was a tool supply here in KY) but I have one that was old when my dad got it as a kid in the late 30's. I have his of course. My brother went more for the newer tools my dad had, I know the uses and quality of the older ones.
Havent we all. Luckily way back when Sears had a surplus store at the Midway distribution center in Chicago and me and my dad lived there getting Craftsman tools for half and less. How many of us as kids used the long screwdrivers as throwing knives? LOL
anyone who would like to learn more about woodworking may also find the book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Woodworking" useful. it teaches the novice woodworker all there is to know about this wonderful hobby
I just did some trim work over the new year holiday. I don't have a nail set and was going to pick one up tomorrow. Think I'll try and find one of these instead. Where did you find yours Bob?
Also, any sears has them, they include them with punch sets which is how I got mine, didn't even know what it was till just now, don't work with wood much so i thought it was some kind of alignment tool,
Thanks for the tip. I've also seen nailsets that slip over the head of the nail. They weren't this spring-type, but those might also be useful in spaces where the hammer-challenged have room to swing, but need some help.
If you search for "58-011 Self-Centering Nail Sets" I think you'll find the one I saw from Stanley. Basically it has a spring loaded sleeve that slips over the nail head, with a nail set inside of it, attached to the internal spring.
Looks pretty nice,After reading the info on them it says they will only fit 4's and 6's whitch are the two most commonly used finish nail Thanks for the post!+++Bob
I prefer the punch. I just set it on the nail, wind up my hammer and let her fly. Then it's just of matter of a little adult language and pulling the punch out of wood after slipping off the nail. Then repeat until the mangled nail is below the wood surface or at least where the surface was. Then you just fill all the holes around the nail. Simple.
Maybe I'll look for one of these spring things instead. Never would have thought it would have worked if I hadn't seen it. Thanks
Thank you! This video was exactly what I needed to help me finish a project.

For a spring activated nail set search "Noxon 32R12-1" available on Ebay or Amazon or some tool specialty stores as well.
