  • Only Whitney can pull off those Growls !!

  • Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!

  • @kmaur21 wrong, sam cooke And marvin gaye could mess with 80s whitney, sam cooke sang this song a thousand times better than whitney , just saying this song isn't really a song made for her , when in her prime she was amazing and 1 of my favorite female singers of all time,. But I will never consider her as great as sam cooke or marvin gaye.. Never

  • @truehiphop809 marvin gaye nor sam cooke cant hold vocals to whitney

  • @truehiphop809 comparing marvin ans sam cooke to whitney is like comparing apples to damn cantaloupes, COMPLETELY different

  • @GaddafiIsAGreatMan PLEASE don't mistake Whitney effortlessness with lack of soul she actually was opera trained, and sung in this era 5 octaves of range very effortlessly night after night. She is the Voice and there is none that can mess with 80's Whitney NONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This indeed is the same exact version Aretha Franklin sang when she performed her rendition... wow, too beautiful. May the legendary Sam Cooke RIP.

  • NOW ALL THOSE HATER JUST DONT LIKE WHITNEY

  • I would love to have heard Whitney sing this with her 1998 style.

  • thank you

  • Whitney *is* a good singer but she's never had sophisticated phrasing (Chaka beats her backside raw in this respect). Nor is she particularly subtle. (Think: Anita Baker). Her cousin Dionne also went the pop route but she has superior timing, retains jazz phrasing and is much more nuanced as a singer. Whitney belts and 20 second glory notes ala broadway which is boring to me. This is better than her usual fare, but she has *nothing* on Aretha when it comes to interpretation.

  • @Takver

    I AGREE WITH YOU

  • I like this version better no offense....

  • ANY OF YOU WHO PUT WHITNEY OVER ARETHA IN SINGING APPARENTLY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT MUSIC AND GOOD VOCALS.

ARETHA OF COURSE CAN'T SING TODAY LIKE SHE USE TO BACK IN THE DAY. HELL WHITNEY CAN'T SING TODAY LIKE SHE DID BACK IN THE DAY.

THERE IS NO COMPARISON BETWEEN THE TWO. THERE IS ARETHA FRANKLIN....SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE AFTER ARETHA AND THEN THERE IS WHITNEY HOUSTON.

  • THERE IS REALLY ONLY ONE SONG I LIKE BY WHITNEY HOUSTON AND THAT'S THE SONG FROM THE MOVIE "THE BODYGUARD" I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU.

WHITNEY CAN'T TOUCH ARETHA, GLADYS KNIGHT, CHAKA KHAN, NATALIE COLE OR EVEN TEENA MARIE.

I REMEMBER ONCE WHITNEY WAS ON AN HBO SPECIAL SINGING THE SONG "HOME". I HAD NO IDEA WHAT THE HECK SHE WAS SINGING. IT JUST DID NOT SOUND GOOD. I LATER FOUND IT WAS HOME.

  • @MIMI88998899 WTF are you talking about? You only like I will always love you? LOL! You don't like I have nothing....Saving all my love for you....Greatest love of all....I'm your baby tonight....All the man I need...the list goes on you STAN...GET OUT OF HERE!!!!!!!

  • @gaylolful

I AM TALKING ABOUT REAL SINGERS, REAL SOUL MUSIC, REAL R&B. THOSE SONGS YOU NAMED BY WHITNEY ARE OK. FOR ME THEY ARE JUST OK. NOTHING SPECIAL. I DON'T OWN ANY WHITNEY SONGS. HER VOICE FOR ME IS JUST OK. NOTHING SPECIAL AT ALL.

I HAVE HEARD TOO MANY OTHER REALLY GOOD SINGERS LIKE ARETHA, GLADYS KNIGHT, NATALIE COLE, CHAKA KHAN, ANITA BAKER AND I CAN'T FORGET PHYLLIS HYMAN AS WELL AS OTHERS.

AGAIN THERE IS ARETHA AND MANY OTHERS AFTER ARETHA THEN THERE IS WHITNEY.

  • @MIMI88998899 Did you just call Whitney okay? How is I Have Nothing okay? Okay this conversation is over...you don't know anything about singing....bye..

  • @MIMI88998899 I think Whitney is a great singer with a great voice, but I personally have never particularly cared for her style.

  • @oaklandonthecomeup

I AGREE WITH YOU. IT'S HER STYLE THAT I WAS NEVER REALLY IMPRESSED WITH TOO POP FOR ME. I NEED RAW SOUL LIKE CHAKA, PHYLLIS, ANITA, ARETHA ETC. AND LET'S NOT FORGET GLADYS KNIGHT. I LOVE GLADYS. GLADYS CAN SING HER YOU KNOW WHAT OFF. I SAW HER TWICE IN CONCERT AND SHE DID HER THING.

  • @gaylolful

I ENJOY SEXY SOULFUL VOICES LIKE ARETHA, ANITA, CHAKA, NATALIE, STEPHANIE MILLS, PHYLLIS HYMAN, ANGELA BOFIL ETC.

I GUESS WHAT I AM SAYING IS I DON'T CARE FOR WHITNEY'S STYLE OF SINGING. ALL THE SONGS YOU NAMES ARE JUST "OK" FOR ME. NOTHING SPECIAL AT ALL.

  • @MIMI88998899 You cannot call Whitney Houston an okay singer...it is false...no one agrees with you...I don't care if you think Aretha is better...it makes not sense...

  • Whitney doesn't sing this song better than Aretha. HA! HA! HA!

    Don't make me laugh.

Also, check out Phoebe Snow singing this song.

  • It's interesting Whitney Houston is singing Aretha Franklin's interpretation of the song. I wonder why Whitney chose to not be innovative enough to sing it her own way. I guess that's why Aretha is the Queen!

  • @ZebFAN2010 whitney is fierce

  • @ZebFAN2010

BECAUSE SHE CAN'T SING THAT WELL. SHE SHOULD HAVE MADE IT HER OWN BUT WHITNEY IS NOT THAT GOOD OF A SINGER.

I SAW HER ONCE ON AN HBO SPECIAL SINGING THE SONG "HOME" THAT STEPHANIE MILLS MADE FAMOUS.

I HAD NO IDEA THAT WHITNEY WAS SINGING THAT SONG. I LOVE THE SONG HOME BY STEPHANIE MILLS AND I COULDN'T BELIEVE THAT THE SONG WHITNEY WAS SINGING WAS "HOME". IT SOUNDED NOTHING LIKE HOME BY STEPHINE MILLS. WHITNEY MADE IT HER OWN AND IT WAS A PURE MESS.

  • As for the argument re Aretha vs Whitney - Aretha needs to receive all the respect she deserves, without her there would be no Whitney.

However in this instance, the apprentice has surpassed the mentor. Whitney has greater control of her instrument, especially in her upper register. She also has a far head voice. Although Aretha's musicianship is greater.

It's a close call, but from my perspective Whitney has the better voice.

  • @MrSongbirdsupreme I got nothing else to say... you said it all!!! :D

  • Rachelle Ferrell's version is so groovy!

  • forget aretha and whitney, sam cooke was THE voice

  • Aretha and Whitney had comparable ranges, albeit differently handled. However, insofar as Aretha's vital career extends from the mid 1960s to roughly 2000, and Whitney's began 1980s and relatively ended in 2000, the greater singer, clearly, in the Queen. Not to mention the social impact of Aretha's career and the impact she had on countless R&B divas...no disrespect intended to Whitney, but these are the facts.

  • It's such a shame that so many of you who make these stupid posts pitting singers against each other DON'T UNDERSTAND that the whole point of singing is STORYTELLING & COMMUNICATING a mood or a message and has NOTHING to do with range or anything else. These are not singers, these are artists - and yes there is a difference !! A huge difference - Just enjoy the music

  • Whitney range is way more than Ree. Whitney has hit notes on the top of the piano live in whistle register. Ree never could hit those type of coloratura notes. Plus Whitney highest in mixed voice is like a D6 anyway added to her belting like A5's in full chest voice live. Ree mixes her notes past c5 and never had a full chest voice as high as Whitney's. Her tone is mad nasal in comparison to Whitney cause she mixes. Whitney always been the higher soprano, always will be!

  • Aretha is Queen of SOUL....NOT the Queen of Music.

Whitney is THE VOICE. NOT LIMITED TO ONE STYLE OR GENRE, BUT SIMPLY THE VOICE

Get it? Got It? Good. END OF DISCUSSION.

  • Awesome that is all I can say... I love this classic.. Whitney is awesome... Aretha is Awesome... I nothing but positive things to say about both legends.

  • For me , Whitney is above all others

  • No Your Wrong Chaka is Whitney idol and Aretha is her god mother but she calls her aunt ree

  • girl done went down that sad road paved with cheap thrills and drugs that kill lets pray forher sorry ass to get back in line

  • That's Aretha arrangement of this classic song. You can tell at the end with the background vocals. That's how Aretha had it arranged in the 70's.

  • this is aretha's version of this song..so obviously she admires her.

  • Damn I love Whitney Houston even saying her name sends chills through my soul. She is the queen of music. She can sin anything and make it sound so great. wow

  • @bla2706

    NO SHE CAN'T

  • do any of you even know that aretha is her idol & she grew up around her and called her auntie ree-ree?

  • this version of whitney is very good but aretha is ispiration of whitney and others greates singers excusame im sorry for my english.

  • i love Aretha, she is one of the greatest.. but Whitney is the best by far

  • sorry i love both singers, but whitney has better or i say most range than aretha, i love aretha. whitney has a lot of beutiful songs but aretha got the soul! that been said, whitney`s voice is better than anyone i hear, except maybe barbra streisand...

  • aretha transformed this song, didn't she? i love the re-arrangement.

  • Aretha is brilliant in her own right, but versatility - whitney is queen...Whitney has talents that span many more genres than aretha - probably because she was operatically trained, influenced by gospel and soul by her mother.

  • Whitney has way way more range than Ree that she rarely uses. Whitney has hit notes in seventh and upper sixth octave. For example 1987 NYC she hits a D7/Eb7 in Control MNINS Simple Truth live she hits a E6 F6 G6 A6, plus Kolding All the Man I Need she hits A6/Bb6. Plus Brunei IWDWS she hits A6 A6 A6 and Bb6 in that sone song. There are more but Whitney has a whistle register that she rarely uses.

  • @ummjt "Whitney has talents that span many more genres than aretha - probably because she was operatically trained, influenced by gospel and soul by her mother."

Aretha has recorded soul/r&b, blues, jazz, gospel, rock, pop. Recorded one of the most influential gospel albums of all times and was mentored by gospel legends Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward & James Cleveland. Whitney's career not even close to being as diverse. I do think Whitney had a beautiful voice.

  • Whitney has more range/power/control and is MUCH better

  • Great share,WWM...You all do know both these ladies love and respect each other. Whitney's mother Cissy used to sing back-up for Aretha, Whit affectionately refers to her as Aunt ReeRee. Whit grew up imitating Ree w/hairbrushes in the bathroom mirrors! And has done many Ree remakes w/her own flav. What da fuss, ya'll! They're 2 of the best ever vocalist to grace God's green earth. They love each other, we can too!!

  • Cissy was engaged to Sam Cooke for a brief time...

  • angel voice .. amazing whitney.

  • sIMPLY THE BEST

  • she's the truth!

  • Whitney Houston is simply the best in the world. Full stop.

  • Her soprano was so high I ya ya ya part 1:25

  • Honey, go listen to Aretha's version. You will want to put "Full stop" there.

Nobody can beat Aretha in her prime. Sadly, Aretha today had loss her voice but she is the living legend.

    R-E-S-P-E-C-T

  • Honestly I know all about RESPECT and in her day Aretha was the top vocalist out. But make no mistake about it Whitney in her prime would most certainly out sing Aretha.

  • Yeah right and 2+2 is equal to 5 for you.

  • No she wouldn't. As much as i love Whit, Aretha couldn't be outsung by no one. No even Whit. Aretha in her prime was more effortless at singing that Whit. So that is really not true.

  • Aretha can be outsung by Whitney hands down...in there peak and now pretty much. I was alive at both there peaks..and trust me...her flow wasn't as effortless as Whitney.

  • Please. Whitney was the best of her generation but not the best ever. Aretha in her prime was better than Whitney, plus Aretha hit higher notes than Whit and did them more often than Whit. You don't have to be alive in both of there peaks to see that Aretha was way more effortless than Aretha. Aretha was near perfect in her. Hell she was. Everything she did was a musical and vocal masterpiece. Everything came more easily to Aretha than it did with Whit. Even though Whit but Ree was effortless.

  • Thats not true, if u said Aretha sang with more emotions then yes I would agree, but whitney has a wider range than Aretha.

  • No sweet heart Whitney doesn't have a wider range. Aretha hit higer notes and she did them more often.

  • Whitney in her prime VS Aretha in her prime = WHITNEY THE QUEEN.

  • u are delusional if u think aretha has awider range. Whitney hits notes in Aretha's song that Aretha only dreams of. Yeah Aretha has more soul and seems to sing from a deeper place but Whitney has a more powerful top range and can go higher.

  • Excuse me but not once have I ever said that Aretha has a wider range than Whitney. Not once! How dare you call me delusional! Try reading my posts. Whitney is my favourite singer of all time and IMO, the best vocalist of all time in her prime. And I have NEVER stated any different!

    How rude some people are!

  • soulandrnbfan, I wasnt talking about u, my comment was directed at ThequeenAretha, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.

  • Sweetheart. It is a fact that Aretha has a wider range than Whitney. Both in low notes and high note. Whitney has barely an A5. Aretha has hit that note tones of time as well as Bb5 , B5, C6, C#6 and even a E6. Aretha hit high A to C note easily many of times live. Aretha top range is more powerful than Whitney. Whitney uses dominant head in her upper note. That is just the truth. That doesn't make Whitney any less of a singer. She is still great.

  • Aretha is the Real Queen. Even thought Whitney is amazing.

  • Your crazy to thing that Aretha has a wider range than Whitney...and dayum professional in the music industry will tell you different......for Aretha to even reach a note she has to yell it out...she doesn't sing with comfort or control..not to mention she doesn't even have an easy flow with notes...please child!!!

  • No you are the one that is crazy. Face it Aretha has a wider range both in her lower register and higher register. Any professional in music would know that. Aretha doesn;t scream she sings. Aretha always had better control over her voice than Whitney and better comfort. Whitney would sometimes be flat live. And Aretha's flow with her notes are perfect. In Aretha's prime she was vocally the best. Whitney is amazing but her didn't have Aretha control or was a effortless with her notes. Face it.

  • Aretha Screams, if you want, I can get the video's up here to prove it...I've seen Whitney in concert 25 times....illustrate to me, even from youtube video's were she sings flat, I have a massive catalog right here at Whitney world......I still disagree with you, look at whitney sing and really look, you cannot tell me that Aretha sang more effortlessly then Whitney. and if you have any video to prove it, I will be more then gamed to watch. Basically Whitney just sounds better overall

  • Nah, I don't....we all know and understand who the Voice is.....Exhibit 1, were having the discussion on her page now.....

  • Whitney might be the Voice but Aretha is THE QUEEN honey. End of discussion.

  • The discussion ended when you stated that Aretha has more range then Whitney....thats when it really ended...You have a good one.

  • Whether you like it or not, Aretha has more range than Whitney. That is a fact. Face it, get over it. Case closed!

  • I love Aretha the queen of soul, but saying that she has more range than Whitney is a big mistake. You don't know what you are talking about girl !!!

  • check out live Aretha vintage performances from her prime years-. "Don't Play That Song", Groovin" , "Natural Woman" and many more. Aretha plays a mean piano. This is Aretha's arrangement. She created it as she did with other brilliant covers - "Respect", Bridge Over Troubled Water", Groovin, "Spanish Harlem" , "I say a Little Prayer - made something new. Has written some great tunes - "Daydreaming", "Think", "Call Me", "All The King's Horses". She has/had more range vocally and creatively.

  • There both cool

  • who told you that lie about Aretha . who has more hit singles than Aretha .Who else but Whitney case closed on you. So there I said it ha!!!!!

  • Yeah, she is the Queen of Fat People. All Hail! lol

  • & aretha is her idol

  • you are so lucky to have seen whitney in concert 25 times! you have no idea how much i would pay to have seen her perform. hopefully she will tour!

  • If you think that about Aretha you have f**k all clue about soul music. How sad for you.

  • @lildarlin90

There was a time when Whitney use to call Bobby the "King" of R&B. You and Whitney must be sipping the same kool aid.

  • OMG I've been looking...praying...looking & praying for this renditioN by Whitney. THANK-YOU WHITNEY WORLD...Perfection at it's best...per usual from the BEST singer this Universe has & will EVER know.

  • it's Milan 1988
