This may seem like a stupid question but I am new at this...In regards to «...visité...» as in «...j'étais visité...» The Passé Composé is it always le participe passé or are they different?
I would say
"Quand j'étais jeune, je rendais visite à ma grand-mère". Sinon, j'aime bien !
@kvmusic you are not a downer, you are just not French and j'ai visité ma grand-mère is perfect French, je suis allé voir ma grand-mère too and finally J'ai rendu visite à ma grand-mère. so I HAVE not To say only j'ai rendu visite...
I may not be French but I AM a native French speaker. I am a French speaking Belgian. And by the way I teach French here in the States. You on the other hand must not be a native French speaker because if you were you would never say, "j'ai visité ma grand-mère."
@kvmusic you are funny, I am happy to be French and to say j'ai visité ma grand-mère (perfect French) like j'ai rendu visite à, may I add that my grand ma is a prisoner dying in a convent! happy now?
i had said i was done with you but i'll say two more things.
1. you think you are so smart (ass) with your "dying grand-mother who is in jail" story. but you missed the point completely. in that case you would still use "rendre visite" because of who she is, the nature of the relationship. very different from a doctor who is visiting patients or a minister who visits a bunch of prisoners.
@kvmusic thank you for insulting me because you can't prove you are right, as I said both are possible with the same meaning, you disagree? it is your problem! you want to insult me? you prove you are wrong!
@isabellefleuur with my lesson you shouldnot have any doubt, it is past and finished and not related to another event, so passé composé of course: je n'ai pas aimé or j'ai détesté
@lsfrench But isabellefleuur said that "usually, i ate simpler food." isn't that a repeated past action? I thought for a repeated action, you use the inparfait.
@khrisytube hi, thank you for your comment, I read it too quick and you are right, because of the word "usually" we use the imparfait here, habituellement, je détestais ..., thanks again!
Helped thanks!

@fairyatluvland you are right but because of the expression "several times" we don't insist on the duration.

Sorry to be a downer but you can't ever say "J'ai visité ma grand-mère" or "Je visitais ma grand-mère" in French. It's a mistake.
You have to say "J'ai rendu visite à ma grand-mère" or "Je rendais visite à ma grand-mère".
Visiter un endroit.
Rendre visite à une personne.

kvmusic 5 months ago
and you should follow the link bellow the video, you will find more explanations
lsfrench 10 months ago
@lsfrench,
No, you should never say "visiter quelqu'un". Maybe 150 years ago but not anymore.
The only exceptions are: visiter un prisonnier, un mourant, un moine ou une sœur.
