If you pay attention and actually follow the story of the entire series then you know what the spell does. Kairi from KH1 doesn't have any memories about her past so she doesn't remember any of this. Aqua says that the spell will, quote, "BRING you to one who will PROTECT you," Before KH1 happened Hollow Bastion was taken over by maleficent, so the spell sent her to Sora at Destiny Islands. And Sora was brought back from Kairi's light when he became a heartless, not the spell.

In KH1, Kairi used her Princess of Heart powers to make a shell/body for Sora to keep his heart in(His body is gone since a nobody is made of a body and soul, which he then gets back near the end of KH2).
