DC had Ghost and Marvel the Red Ghost who looked similar so they copy ideas. Timely comics The Vision was a bald headed green guy who predated dc's Martian Manhunter who is also.

The people behind the scenes felt Superman back then was way too powerful(even with the kryptonite)and that there wasn't enough to challenge him, so I guess they toned down his invulnerability! There is one episode where The Furies from the planet Apocalypse ganged up on him and one of 'em eventually used electricity to subdue but made it look way too easy in the process, and I mean way too easy, considering it was Superman of course!
