A lot of Hughes mental illness was linked to syphilis which he got when he was younger. His OCD was more prominent after his plane crash in 1946, When he recovered from his injuries he locked himself in the screening room for months before he was subpoenaed to show up in front of a committee led by senator Bruster from Maine. Hughes was under investigation because of the planes that the US government paid for but never received. After the hearings Hughes flew the Spruce Goose.
@monkoman100 During the hearings they bugged him in Carlon Hotel. That made him paranoid. But he was morphine then codeine addict after that accident. He used to self inject. I think in that situation money does'nt help you. It allowed him to indulge himself.
Isn't it obvious he was hooked on psych meds? They cause all kinds of weird effects. He didn't start out nuts. They made him that way.
I don't blame him for being paranoid. Everyone was after his money, how would he know who his real friends were. He couldn't trust anyone. Read some of the biographies about his life.
It is no accident his fortune went to medical/psychiatric/biochemical research.
People with cognitive disorders are humans too. Just like the other comments mentioned they do have special gifts that and amazing field of interests. Having cognitive disorders should not be taken by other people as a source of joke nor ridicule. It is not a sign of weakness, rather a physiologic response to genetics and environmental changes and stimulus.
Obsessive compulsive disorder is pretty common and back then there wasn't adequate treatment for it. I really hate how they make him into some freak in this clip. It's really ridiculous. Ever hear of dignity? It was done on purpose given Nat Geo's politics.
@drewnwalker dats wat i was gonna say.. he was nt any monster like person.. its jus cuz of his illness, anyone shud read the title, (he was ill) before commenting...
So when does the mentally-ill billionaire appear. I have watched this clip several times and can only figure that it could possibly be the gentleman who delivers the milk. I don't understand why the clip features so much attention on Howard Hughes, typical figure of fame, trying to hog the limelight of some poor loon, stealing this poor insane person's 15 minutes (well, actually 2:45), of fame.
Next thing is some twisted bastard will put together some footage of Forest Gump, calling him simple!
and on a side note, the voices said to me the NG is full of shit in 4 languages and I am LOL'ing my ass off, and although I am not familiar with OCD, I know mania which on a light day is like OCD and nuts or not, I am still smarter than most smarter "normal" people and don't shut up when called nuts... since most nuts were geniuses and Jewish and or German... statistically.
Germans and Jews were probably divided for the genius that came out of them. Most were German Jews.
NG has earned fucktard status in my opinion! many geniuses including the top dog official of manic depression are psychotic as fuck and smarter than most people. my voices try to keep me from classes or working but I ignore it and still go... because manic as fuck or not I still know 4 languages work and study more than most on my 2nd career and do well and fit the profile of the genius manic depressives in history and mental illness is a gift to people like me so I am proud and don't care.
@MrSpieldose I hear music and write it, I can argue about the Tachyon constant among many physics theories in 4 languages and am quite rational since my delusions are better than most sane choices in the world and hope that my opinion is taken seriously someday because it might help and insanity gave the world and humanity some of it's best gifts in Art and Music and Science and it is sad that NG is so ignorant... although OCD is different than Mania, it is sad to degrade the many of us
IMO Manic depression in people with high IQ is a direct reaction to the moronic ways of so called sane people. Mind you the 'sane' people that invented SSRIs get my vote as the pills help you to ignore the voices of reason in your head and join in with society to avoid getting locked away for being nuts! Yes it's SSRIs or lobotomy for me:)
Lol -- supposing as a genius, one day I had an epiphany realizing I had a billion dollars with a lot of free time -- or more likely, an underachieving slacker winning a 100 million dollar lottery -- what would I do? Perhaps..stay in a darken (computer) room for more than 4 months--never leaving; using a (cell)phone to conduct business and eat a diet of (junk food)? But most of the time, just sit in my own chair, often naked, surfing the web and watching YouTube, clip after clip, day after day?
Didn't he have syphilis? I thought they found out it had been dormant in his system for some time and manifested itself in this way, producing symptoms consistent with mental disorders.
I wonder what he wanted? He was clearly a perfectionist of sorts.

The reason no one helped him was because they didn't know what was wrong with him. They didn't know about OCD back then, and they certainly weren't very good at treating the illnesses they did know.

The unabomber was also a victim of the CIA. Ted moved to the middle of no-where for a reason, to try to get away from the directed energy weapon attacks. Dr José Delgado, worked for the CIA
Director of Neuropsychiatry
Yale University Medical School Congressional Record,
Since I'm attacked daily by directed energy weapons...... yes I do believe it. You on the other hand are not a victim.... so I understand why you don't believe it. But that doesn't make it not true.
Hughes had many run-ins with the government.... not too hard to figure out.
hmm so he was immensely afraid of germs yet he didn't take a shower for months? this is very ironic as a person with OCD compulsively cleans themselves.
Yes, it's sometimes called the "Howard Hughes dilemma", when the fear of germs is so powerful no amount of cleaning is good enough and the OCD sufferer abandons cleaning altogether.
Hard to write what I know in only 500 characters! Hughes had agoraphobia, mysophobia, narcissistic personality disorder, & OCD. Seemed to be in Schizophrenias prodromal phase, but actually does not meet the DSM-IV-TR criteria for Schizophrenia. He did show exact fit to 2 distinct disorders: Schizoid Personality Disorder & Schizotypal Personality Disorder. AND: Had syphilis, perhaps since childhood, which affects the brain and would explain a great # of symptoms. Was often on codeine and valium.
--Hi, and thank you for replying! :) You said, "syphilis is a genital disease" which implies that you believe it can't be a root cause of mental imbalance. Actually, it is somewhat common knowledge that syphilis--a sexually transmitted disease--also affects the brain. (Look up all that syphilis does, and you will understand what all this refers to.) Would've explained that in more detail in my original posting on Hughes, but YouTube imposes a 500-character limit.
How naive Bridgejones.... He was being attacked by the whole country! The media turned on him, and he was in the biggest fight in his life to save his families dynasty. He was falling apart because they were escalating it for him. His compulsive behaviors had no fix back then... their idea of a fix was shock therapy and sedation. He was being protected by the ones who loved him and saw him suffer. period.
He had alot of money. As a result he was able to avoid getting help because he could just rent hotel rooms and pay people to take care of him. He was able to have alot of privacy because of his wealth. If he hadn't had so much money, maybe he would have been given help sooner.
Yes, he was compulsive about germs, washing his hands and food. His addiction to pain medicine magnified his compulsions and eventually he went insane. It is believed that he died from drug addiction and dependence.
1 thumb up, get the fuck out of here...he was born into money and inherited it upon his parents death, but he was also a genius..you ever met an insane person? especially someone with OCD? their IQs are through the fucking roof, everyone looks down on people with mental illess but in most cases-if they had a grip, they'd run circles around you..thats how
@jsphmerc re: your statement on howard hughes OCD problem. You are right....alot of OCD and (Panic Attack sufferers) have very high IQs......in fact Charles Darwin had panic disorder
There is a photo on the Internet of Howard in Las Vagas. He looks better in the picture than he did in past years! It looks photoshopped, but it dose show an older looking hughes in a sunny location!
i tink ders someting rong wi my sister but i dont really know.. shes just so wierd, she freaks me out.. actualy not just me i actualy feel nervous around her.. send me a personal message if u tink u can talk to her and il giv u her msn coz she wont talk to me
As a young boy, when Howard wanted to attend summer camp (at a time when the public feared the spread of polio), his parents wanted assurances that their son would be protected. When this assurance was not forthcoming, his mother decided to keep him home. After attending camp one summer, Hughes avoided another year at camp by complaining about headaches and bad dreams.
His mother was paranoid from the start, moving to Humble to deliver Howard because of the fear of mosquitos. That has nothing to do with Howard himself and nothing to do with OCD.
OCD can be very hereditary. Most historians agree that he was Obsessive-Compulsive. Also, OCD can get worse later in life, or not show up at all for years.
Umm, people please stop making fun of the guy. I know how he felt, I have OCD too. Not as bad as him but still... It isn't funny. So stop making stupid comments.
Never believe a Hollywood biographic movie, bookgirl25. Hughes was COMPLETLY normal prior to his 1946 Hollywood plane crash (155 mile per hour). Hughes took drugs to deal with the pain for the rest of his life.
The movie implies that Hughes had OCD from the start. He didn't, not until 1946 did he show any symptoms...and those were really caused by drugs. Read 'HUGHES' by Richard Hack for the real story.
From wikipedia: By the mid-1940s, Hughes had developed the debilitating symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). His mother may have suffered from OCD, and coddled and spoiled her only child. It was Hughes' mother who first provided him with a means of escaping social situations and pressures by using the excuse of illness.
what are the symptons of OCD, please explain, i believe i may suffer from the disease but need clarification. what are the symptons? i know it is diff for every person but can u try explain?
Obsessive compulsive disorder is a coping mechanism for anxiety, from what i know. The rituals you perform distract you from your anxiety or fear. Every person has their own ritual and way of coping. Rituals range from counting obsessively, touching things, clearing your throat, washing your hands, and many many other things. Howard Hughes would be considered an extreme case of OCD, and in his case would need to seek treatment.
yeah you're almost right on, except the rituals are meant to alieviate the fear and anxiety by closing the door on it (shortlived as it is) not distract from it. There is no distraction from OCD, thats why OCD is most often synonymous with the word 'intrusive' IE: intrusive thoughts and such.
I think ocd has something to do with the way you manifest stress. If he would let himself calm down, then the ocd wouldn't cause as extreme erratic behavior, but it's a chemical imbalance in the brain that would be next to impossible to fix. Even through psychiatry it's only a controllable condition.
I have a cousin who washed his hand nonstop until it bleed,i never seen anyone so fearful of germs,it's a very sad thing to see, hopefully he will grow out of it,what a mess in the head.
It would have been better if they had put Leonardo Di Caprio's scene..
"Come in with the milk! Come in with the milk! Come in with the milk! Come in with the milk! Come in with the milk! Come in with the milk! Come in with the milk! Come in with the milk!"
He did highly classified work for the CIA, Military and others, it's not simple to determine what was really happening. Many projects or programs he was involved in are still classified (search disclosureproject on google video)
He had gifts, abilities that put him way over the top
science has never disproved the existence of God, from all the scentific shows and theories i have seen they tend to do quite the opposite( they never right out say it mind you but you can tell that's were it leans toward). but how did this turn to a belief in God or not anyway?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
phukkk if i had a billion dollazzz...and i was ill....shitttzzzz....i'd buy an island n life there with 10 beautifulll gurlss....and buy horse, cows, dog, elephants, lion, spiders, cats, birns, x-box 36o, playstation 3, id do everything....hahaha
it's called O.C.D. people a mental illness. a brillant man who was stricken by illness anyone can in fact will succome to some sort of illness . even those without a fortune. get real.
Hughes was in mentally bad shape. He was lucky nobody took advantage of him during this time. His illness had nothing to do with God or the lack of God in his life; he was mentally ill and God himself couldn't have fixed it.
He probably realized that everything is for nothing just like a few other people have. Nevermind god. That is just a hoax to replace laws and inspire to control. I figure he went to his limits mentally.
Some people without realising it help to break people apart. Stop believing in nonsensical "If good things happen because of God if bad blame self" dogmas and start being compassionate with fellow human beings regardless of religions.
You are a Muslim. I KNOW of MANY more devout MUSLIMS who suffer in silent and who in the eyes of pple lack self-esteem. They are under-achievers and by your definition they lack trust in God? No. I think they let their fate too much in the hands of GOD when in fact it is people themselves that shape their own fates AND others.
Expecting God to solve people's problems instead of getting off your arse and helping them yourself, or helping yourself, has caused more problems for humans than any kind of lack of faith.
Religion are the scourge of the human race. Developed and maintained to control the behavior of others in the name of a fictional, mythical, omnipotent figure.
well...some people have YouTube and messenger addictions like that - when life doesn't really exist beyond the blue Windows frame of their pc...sad. Many won't admit their breakdowns.
Mr.slipknotlov3r555, with all due respect i bet ya that you aren't even nearly successful than howard hughs. So you can't insult him. Even though he is weird he is a genius.
Most human beings are fucked in the head. IMO our intelligence is unnatural, and occured too quick, hence natures balance is thrown out because of us. Also peoples tendancy for a disturbed mind is an example of something that went weong along our evolutionary path, imho. Bloody hell, i'm a good philosopher, haha.
Well, in the past 100 years, technology has made huge leaps, but civilization has always rode the coattails of a select few geniuses. For example, who knows- in detail- how I'm posting this?
Humans haven't changed much since ancient times. We just have more shiny objects than we did a long time ago.

Thanks.

sounds like he may have had panic attacks. That will keep you indoors for "years"
inkey2 2 years ago
he had OCD (obssesive compulsive disorder)
02ellwoj 2 years ago
I have first hand experience that there was technology that was possibly being used against him, that he was unaware of.
Technology known to only the dark ones who are to this day in full control.
But all that is about to change.
Blessings to all

How naive Bridgejones.... He was being attacked by the whole country! The media turned on him, and he was in the biggest fight in his life to save his families dynasty. He was falling apart because they were escalating it for him. His compulsive behaviors had no fix back then... their idea of a fix was shock therapy and sedation. He was being protected by the ones who loved him and saw him suffer. period.

It's really sad, why did'nt anyone help the poor man? it's disgusting that he died in that state.
Bridgejones08 3 years ago
he wasn't poor.
99none99 3 years ago
yes i know he was'nt poor, how could i not know that! i was talking about him as a person not how much wealth he had.
Bridgejones08 3 years ago
He had alot of money. As a result he was able to avoid getting help because he could just rent hotel rooms and pay people to take care of him. He was able to have alot of privacy because of his wealth. If he hadn't had so much money, maybe he would have been given help sooner.

96Senirem 3 years ago
Yes, he was compulsive about germs, washing his hands and food. His addiction to pain medicine magnified his compulsions and eventually he went insane. It is believed that he died from drug addiction and dependence.

I <3 Howard Hughes
starfruit212 3 years ago 2
As a young boy, when Howard wanted to attend summer camp (at a time when the public feared the spread of polio), his parents wanted assurances that their son would be protected. When this assurance was not forthcoming, his mother decided to keep him home. After attending camp one summer, Hughes avoided another year at camp by complaining about headaches and bad dreams.
bookgirl25 3 years ago
His mother was paranoid from the start, moving to Humble to deliver Howard because of the fear of mosquitos. That has nothing to do with Howard himself and nothing to do with OCD.
RAMKING61 3 years ago
OCD can be very hereditary. Most historians agree that he was Obsessive-Compulsive. Also, OCD can get worse later in life, or not show up at all for years.
bookgirl25 3 years ago
Umm, people please stop making fun of the guy. I know how he felt, I have OCD too. Not as bad as him but still... It isn't funny. So stop making stupid comments.
bookgirl25 3 years ago
Never believe a Hollywood biographic movie, bookgirl25. Hughes was COMPLETLY normal prior to his 1946 Hollywood plane crash (155 mile per hour). Hughes took drugs to deal with the pain for the rest of his life.
RAMKING61 3 years ago
I haven't seen the movie. What are you implying?
bookgirl25 3 years ago
The movie implies that Hughes had OCD from the start. He didn't, not until 1946 did he show any symptoms...and those were really caused by drugs. Read 'HUGHES' by Richard Hack for the real story.
RAMKING61 3 years ago
From wikipedia: By the mid-1940s, Hughes had developed the debilitating symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). His mother may have suffered from OCD, and coddled and spoiled her only child. It was Hughes' mother who first provided him with a means of escaping social situations and pressures by using the excuse of illness.
bookgirl25 3 years ago
what are the symptons of OCD, please explain, i believe i may suffer from the disease but need clarification. what are the symptons? i know it is diff for every person but can u try explain?
crneroses 3 years ago
It depends. What do you do that makes you think you have it?
bookgirl25 3 years ago
Obsessive compulsive disorder is a coping mechanism for anxiety, from what i know. The rituals you perform distract you from your anxiety or fear. Every person has their own ritual and way of coping. Rituals range from counting obsessively, touching things, clearing your throat, washing your hands, and many many other things. Howard Hughes would be considered an extreme case of OCD, and in his case would need to seek treatment.
but just wikipedia it...
summerrain5 3 years ago
yeah you're almost right on, except the rituals are meant to alieviate the fear and anxiety by closing the door on it (shortlived as it is) not distract from it. There is no distraction from OCD, thats why OCD is most often synonymous with the word 'intrusive' IE: intrusive thoughts and such.
jsphmerc 3 years ago 3
i know ur post is 4 months old but does that mean that if u get rid of ur anxiety then u get rid of OCD???
shadyjimbo 3 years ago
I think ocd has something to do with the way you manifest stress. If he would let himself calm down, then the ocd wouldn't cause as extreme erratic behavior, but it's a chemical imbalance in the brain that would be next to impossible to fix. Even through psychiatry it's only a controllable condition.

He did highly classified work for the CIA, Military and others, it's not simple to determine what was really happening. Many projects or programs he was involved in are still classified (search disclosureproject on google video)
He had gifts, abilities that put him way over the top
Hughes companies:
Launched the first communications satellite
The first laser on 16 May 1960
The Apache Helicopter
He took on the 'elite' (bankers)
Prevented PanAm from obtaining a monopoly
The list goes on...

abrandt83 4 years ago
Hughes was in mentally bad shape. He was lucky nobody took advantage of him during this time. His illness had nothing to do with God or the lack of God in his life; he was mentally ill and God himself couldn't have fixed it.
buffalo517 4 years ago
He probably realized that everything is for nothing just like a few other people have. Nevermind god. That is just a hoax to replace laws and inspire to control. I figure he went to his limits mentally.

You are a Muslim. I KNOW of MANY more devout MUSLIMS who suffer in silent and who in the eyes of pple lack self-esteem. They are under-achievers and by your definition they lack trust in God? No. I think they let their fate too much in the hands of GOD when in fact it is people themselves that shape their own fates AND others.
flying8speedistra 4 years ago 2
Expecting God to solve people's problems instead of getting off your arse and helping them yourself, or helping yourself, has caused more problems for humans than any kind of lack of faith.

Spewin99 4 years ago 2
Well, in the past 100 years, technology has made huge leaps, but civilization has always rode the coattails of a select few geniuses. For example, who knows- in detail- how I'm posting this?
Humans haven't changed much since ancient times. We just have more shiny objects than we did a long time ago.
