For me the real mystery about Lang Lang's playing is how he can play those chords so forcefully with his fingers perpendicular to the keyboard and not break them.
He is a brilliant pianist with incredible technique and good expression. I do enjoy listening, but watching him play can be distracting. Sure his stage character is eccentric, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he is a virtuoso. the Rach 3 is a monster and i admire anyone who can truly tackle it!
Something can always be said about Lang Lang's 'Showboating". As a piano player myself, i know for a fact that the playing a piece like this does not take you into such spasms and huge bravado movements. Still, Lang Lang strikes me as having a ton of charisma, even if its childish and immature at the moment. Regardless, he's a hell of a performer and you all better get used to seeing him, he'll be sticking around for a while.
Will say though, not my favorite interpretation of this piece.
the first video I ever saw of lang lang made me think... what an idiot, can he be serious? I now love listening to and watching lang lang play, he has to be one of the best of today. Godspeed lang lang
What's with all the hate?? So what if he is a showman? He is still a fantastic pianist and musician, and has done so much to to help popularize this dying art. I'd be surprised if any of those who disliked this could play half as well as Lang Lang.
If you look at the youth of today classical music seems to be a dying art in many cases and places so thank God for Lang Lang, someone who makes classical music approachable to everybody, young and old. So all you moaning Minnies who knock him down - think again and just shut up!!!
You guys are truly foolish. Lang Lang is an exuberant individual, he cannot help the way his persona is and the way he feels. He is a showman and a truly talented pianist. He reminds me of Liberace.
agreed, this guy seems good, though talent i dont suspect comes through robot programmed genious. a computer may know all the right words, but id prefer tubular bells to this anyday, puppet-ordained emotionless clown explosive spoilt computer game, if only you could see inside his head youd find a disc jockey in the wrong theme park, perhaps could pair up with lady Gaga? if only the bloke had discovered women earlier...
OMFG what the hell is this O_O the only thing that can save him is if he writes something of his own and plays it. if he doesn't he's just some kind of clown, that makes fun of great Music written by great composers. And I believe he actualy Feels the music, he doesn't just pretend to feel it like some pianists do. Lang Lang is probably one of the best alive today.
@legislator06 you need to be in concert and experience this. trust me your experience WILL change. give it a shot. my opinion totally changed when i heard him in concert.
I am Chinese and I hate the way he plays piano, no emotions, all about showing off. Great technique though, so...I would say he's a piano technician, not a pianist.

I hope he's on E, or some other extremely strong drug, because that is the only reason someone should act like should a retard, when he clearly has a normal IQ.
At first, I hated the way he played. But I realized he has something others dont. The ability to be HIMSELF on stage. Quite often I find myself practicing at home, and it will be perfect, i will feel comfortable and relaxed, but the moment i walk onto stage. Im tense, and I don't act myself, my playing is reduced by 40 percent...Lang Lang is the opposite. He has his own personality..
he is a showman, but a clown at the same time...his interpretations are all the same, whether liszt or rachmaninov, or mozart even.....there is no musical endeavor, just technical and facial theatrics....wildly passionate, but by watching him one can't distinguish if he is feeling the music or putting on a technical play narrated by music.
Don't forget Rachmaninov is himself pretty excentric, and if you can't look at him, just close your eyes by god's sake. Anyway, one has to be pretty excentric to perform on stage! If they are not, they play in an orchestra or make only records. Happily, there are orchestra musicians, and there are performers.
One thing I will say about people who comment on youtube piano videos is that soooo many seek self-validation by criticizing the professionals musicians. In fact, most who leave negative comments about pianist like Lang Lang only do so in an attempt to seem more intelligent. In other words, "I'm going to criticize Lang Lang's interpretation and describe it as lacking 'hue', 'color', and 'texture' so that other youtube users think I know what I'm talking about in hopes of getting a thumbs up."
Screw all the haters. They're only judging Lang Lang based on what they see and not what they hear. I guarantee if they were to listen to different interpretations of this same piece, some would actually LIKE this and wouldn't even realize it's LL playing. If you actually sit down and pay attention to what you're LISTENING to, you'll notice it's far from goofy as it appears when you see him. Lang Lang is awesome. (y)

He puts on a jacket with jewels and I would have thought I am seeing Liberace again. What a clown. Fighting with the orchestral music all the way. I would have smack him with my baton if I was the conductor.
@cammywatt95 i agree completely. this guy is an amazing human being...unfortunately i f*%#ing HATE his hair cut and i also have an opinion about how he sits on his chair...
There is a casino in this man's future...perhaps a jewel encrusted cape...a dozen white tigers...an exploding piano...or an impossible number of midget clowns emerging from the piano while King Clown cLang cLang pounds out Vocalise while making retarded faces for the camera. That's all I can think about when he plays Rachmaninov.
lol you're so mad because he's phenomenal at what he does but you can't stand the fact that he looks silly doing what normal people consider a product of handwork, passion and in sometime genius.
man, this is just SOO freaking cool for so many reasons. Lang Lang is incredible, and Rachmaninoff REALLY knows how to touch us all with his music. God Bless there hearts and God Bless music!
I love the musically-induced tonic-clonic seizures ranging from 0:00 to 0:30... J/K; I would give anything to Experience to The Joy Lang Lang gets to experience having scaled the monstrous Rach 3! (It's Monumental! Hardest Piece You Could Everest Play!) One of the Most Entertaining, Youthful Pianists In Our Time. Thank You Lang Lang, Thank You! Peace and Blessings
You know i was just thinking the exact same thing today, about how youtube is an exchange of immature comments and videos... for the most part. as for you other comment - "And who is he to judge how I appreciate music?" - i don't care when people say 'Lang Lang blew this piece' what frustrates me the most is when they say he is an insult to the composers. or that he is 'the worst pianist ever'. He is extremely talented and he will find his place in classical music.
While I could never play this in 10 lifetimes and I like Lang Lang - he's interesting I have to agree with other people's comments here. I love the Rach 3 and Lang Lang is EXTREMELY FAST probably the fastest I have EVER seen which is impressive in it's own light. The only problem is that there is more too it than JUST speed I believe. I love Hyuck Cho's or Harrowitz performance of this which in on youtube too. He goes fast where it needs it and slow and quiet where it needs it too in control.
My god.. He is so mediocre that he must put on a show and jump around so that people will pay attention. Vladimir Horowitz, the greatest pianist who ever lived.. He knew the music, and he respected it. When he performed, it was about the music, not himself.
@nmbanana His bodylanguage? it's not unsual for musicians at all, especially not in classcial music, it's only that bad because the camera is coming too close.. pianist without any bodylanguage are mostly boring to watch, and Lang Lang has too much, but it's not that worse really..
@nmbanana hmm please give me an example if you can?
It could be right.. He did'nt use much body language when I saw him.. He has many good recordings and interpretations too. You really have to remember how many concerts he play, and how few of them that actually are bad.
He is the greatest ever, in my opinion. He's full of life, he's dramatic, he makes it seem like he not even thinking about the fact that this is the hardest piece ever. He so dramatic. That's why we watch him. He's not some guy who just plays the notes. He has FEELING
His playing is completely dry. He plays the notes, and tries to make the audience think he's feeling the music by doing overly dramatic and unnecessary movements. The movements don't change the way he plays. I don't remember Horowitz ever doing these crazy movements, or Rubinstein, Richter moved his head, but that's more of a thing that he tends to do without realizing he's doing it. Lang Lang draws all the attention to himself, rather than the music he's playing.
I'm sorry, but, factually, to say that Lang Lang has no musicality is naive, stupid and proves beyond any doubt that you yourself must have no comprehension of what music is. If you cannot hear the dynamic differences throughout this piece, you cannot hear. You may not like it, but it is there. It seems strange to think that out of the millions of people that think Lang Lang IS musical and brilliant, YOU are right? Hm...perhaps you should re-think your rash evaluation.
Really? Is that all musicality is? Going loud and soft? Is that really how Richter became one of the best of all time? Is that how Horowitz was known as a great pianist with amazing sound? Because he was able to go loud and soft? Don't be ridiculous. And yes, there are millions of idiots who think he's brilliant because they're those people from Hollywood Bowl who don't listen to the music, they pay attention to his theatrics.
Im not sure I like Lang Langs interpretation right here, but I've attentet a lot of different concert, within between one with Lang Lang, performin Bartok and Schubert and a lot of other pieces, and during that concert I must say he was better than the most other pianists I've ever heard, not just technically but also in his dynamics and the way he interpreted. He is probably the most known pianist today and people somehow prefer looking at his bad performances and forget others bad performances
Thank You RachmaniPablo for Posting! Thank You Lang Lang for Mastering the Hardest F***ing Piano Piece Known to Mankind! You Played Your Heart Out and Your Fingers Off! Truly Inspirational and Wondrous To Watch. Although, I do miss the video where Lang Lang, playing the Cadenza, stares right through the camera and rips through those Big Fat Chords! Don't You Love Those Big Fat Chords! Props to All that Attempt the Rach 3. Finally, Props to Serge Rachmaninoff, True Genius. Period.
For all of you who have nothing more to talk about than his facial expressions....Every artist should find his/her own style. I know drummers who look crazier than this. It's just their way of getting into it/expressing themselves/getting into the music. In the end, it shouldn't be an issue. I think Lang Lang is extreamly talented, especially since he's able to play very complex peices, such as this.
Yea.... honestly, normally I`m pissed that they pan away from the pianist.. but I thank the camera for not showing LL`s face at 3:01 till 3:30.
Like... ugh.. come on, I could stand his facial contortions in Liebestraume, fine. but this is ridiculous, it`s plain disrespectful to Rach.. it's not even self-indulgence anymore, it's seriously disturbing and even scary.
Disrespectful? Haha, so Lang Lang enjoying himself is disrespectful? Look, yes he pulls strange face makes strange movements and gestures but so flippin' what? He plays piano brilliantly and that's why people listen.
So what? For starters, there are far more brilliant pianists than LL, and they all either abhor or simply refuse to exhibit LL's theatrics. Gyrating like that is unnecessary in making music, and you can tell from the comments here that it's definitely affected more than one listener.
As for disrespect, well, if you think a man like Rach would nod approvingly at LL's behavior, then be my guest.
There is no music to listen to except for the orchestra, maybe. But as far as Lang Lang's playing, there's no music. He doesn't know how to feel music. On a documentary I was watching they said Beethoven's advice for piano was: push your fingers down, refrain from doing unnecessary movements, and make the instrument sing. He's pressing his fingers down, yes, however, he's making a ton of unnecessary movements, and he's not letting the instrument sing, he's banging the keys.
And it's not completely subjective. The subjective part is stuff like what you see when you hear a certain piece, nobody can argue with that. HOWEVER, if a pianist has no musicality in his playing, saying Rubinstein, Horowitz, Richter, Yefim Bronfman are more brilliant pianists isn't really opinion. Lang Lang tries to hog the attention by doing these crazy movements to the point where nobody's paying attention to the music, they're paying attention to him.
It is completely subjective. If you like what you see, that's fine. If you like what you hear that's fine. If you don't, that, is also fine. Different people like different things. And you cannot say their is no musicality in Lang Lang's playing. There are variations in speed, tone, dynamics etc etc. You can say, "I don't like the way he moves around like a circus monkey" by all means, and you don't have to like it, but please don't be so naive as to say that there is no musicality.
Of course I can say he has no musicality, especially since I'm not the only one who thinks that. That's why they call him "Bang Bang". He basically only has two sounds, VERY loud, and soft. Pianists should be able to have many different colors and shades of softness and loudness. He can go very loud, because he harshly starts banging the keys, but he can't really go that soft. Listen to pianists like Yefim Bronfman, since he's the best pianist living today, and you'll see what I mean.
He can't go that soft? Listen to him playing Leibestraum. And he can't do anything inbetween loud and soft? Listen to Rhapsody On A Theme by Paganini. Stlil you'll probably disagree, which proves that music is subjective, because, I like it and you don't. At the end of the day so what ha ha.
No, that just proves that you haven't listened to other pianists like Yefim Bronfman play things like Beethoven Piano Concertos where he goes extremely soft during their second movements. :)
How does that prove it? What if I don't like Yefim Bronfman's interpretation? Just because I think Lang Lang is better doesn't mean you have to. Just because you think Yefim Bronfman is better, doesn't mean I have to. THAT is why music is subjective. You are subject to the music you like, as am I.
My 7 year old brother thought he was having a seizure...

@wabso why don't you post your performance buddy?? can't play it? thought so

@wabso Haha. You are so right! Don't forget the booming of the confetti cannons at the end.

lol you're so mad because he's phenomenal at what he does but you can't stand the fact that he looks silly doing what normal people consider a product of handwork, passion and in sometime genius.

funny how lang lang is making more movement than the conductor
nmbanana 2 years ago 2
man, this is just SOO freaking cool for so many reasons.

He is extremely talented and he will find his place in classical music.
artymowycz 2 years ago
While I could never play this in 10 lifetimes and I like Lang Lang - he's interesting I have to agree with other people's comments here. I love the Rach 3 and Lang Lang is EXTREMELY FAST probably the fastest I have EVER seen which is impressive in it's own light. The only problem is that there is more too it than JUST speed I believe. I love Hyuck Cho's or Harrowitz performance of this which in on youtube too. He goes fast where it needs it and slow and quiet where it needs it too in control.

he's very unique. I can't figure him out.

My god.. He is so mediocre that he must put on a show and jump around so that people will pay attention. Vladimir Horowitz, the greatest pianist who ever lived.. He knew the music, and he respected it. When he performed, it was about the music, not himself.

@ultracoolhomies horowitz was a strange pianist by the way..

@VSCREW
lang lang is a pretty strange pianist to, have seen how much of an idiot he is making of himself on that stage
nmbanana 2 years ago
@nmbanana His bodylanguage? it's not unsual for musicians at all, especially not in classcial music, it's only that bad because the camera is coming too close.. pianist without any bodylanguage are mostly boring to watch, and Lang Lang has too much, but it's not that worse really..
VSKCREW 2 years ago
@vscrew
i find it to be an eye-sore and also when there is too much body language it will distract you from the music
what i've noticed is more people today are using body language to distract the audience from horrible playing and i think that is what he is doing
nmbanana 2 years ago
@nmbanana hmm please give me an example if you can?
It could be right.. He did'nt use much body language when I saw him.. He has many good recordings and interpretations too. You really have to remember how many concerts he play, and how few of them that actually are bad.
VSKCREW 2 years ago
He is the greatest ever, in my opinion. He's full of life, he's dramatic, he makes it seem like he not even thinking about the fact that this is the hardest piece ever. He so dramatic. That's why we watch him. He's not some guy who just plays the notes. He has FEELING
GoPatriots100 2 years ago
His playing is completely dry. He plays the notes, and tries to make the audience think he's feeling the music by doing overly dramatic and unnecessary movements. The movements don't change the way he plays. I don't remember Horowitz ever doing these crazy movements, or Rubinstein, Richter moved his head, but that's more of a thing that he tends to do without realizing he's doing it. Lang Lang draws all the attention to himself, rather than the music he's playing.
mario54671 2 years ago
I'm sorry, but, factually, to say that Lang Lang has no musicality is naive, stupid and proves beyond any doubt that you yourself must have no comprehension of what music is. If you cannot hear the dynamic differences throughout this piece, you cannot hear. You may not like it, but it is there. It seems strange to think that out of the millions of people that think Lang Lang IS musical and brilliant, YOU are right? Hm...perhaps you should re-think your rash evaluation.
BenjyTehJet 2 years ago 2
Really? Is that all musicality is? Going loud and soft? Is that really how Richter became one of the best of all time? Is that how Horowitz was known as a great pianist with amazing sound? Because he was able to go loud and soft? Don't be ridiculous. And yes, there are millions of idiots who think he's brilliant because they're those people from Hollywood Bowl who don't listen to the music, they pay attention to his theatrics.
mario54671 2 years ago
Im not sure I like Lang Langs interpretation right here, but I've attentet a lot of different concert, within between one with Lang Lang, performin Bartok and Schubert and a lot of other pieces, and during that concert I must say he was better than the most other pianists I've ever heard, not just technically but also in his dynamics and the way he interpreted. He is probably the most known pianist today and people somehow prefer looking at his bad performances and forget others bad performances

josajpnide 2 years ago
For all of you who have nothing more to talk about than his facial expressions....Every artist should find his/her own style. I know drummers who look crazier than this. It's just their way of getting into it/expressing themselves/getting into the music. In the end, it shouldn't be an issue. I think Lang Lang is extreamly talented, especially since he's able to play very complex peices, such as this.
I applaud him!

BenjyTehJet 2 years ago
I think the visuals is all he can give because musically Lang Lang has nothing.
mario54671 2 years ago
Yea.... honestly, normally I`m pissed that they pan away from the pianist.. but I thank the camera for not showing LL`s face at 3:01 till 3:30.
Like... ugh.. come on, I could stand his facial contortions in Liebestraume, fine. but this is ridiculous, it`s plain disrespectful to Rach.. it's not even self-indulgence anymore, it's seriously disturbing and even scary.
BrackenClelk 2 years ago
Disrespectful? Haha, so Lang Lang enjoying himself is disrespectful? Look, yes he pulls strange face makes strange movements and gestures but so flippin' what? He plays piano brilliantly and that's why people listen.
BenjyTehJet 2 years ago
BrackenClelk 2 years ago
Music is subjective therefore you can't say there are far more brilliant pianists than Lang Lang.
Yes unnecessary I agree but that doesn't make his music bad.
I don't think Rachmaninoff would nod approvingly but then I don't think he would shake it disapprovingly.
Listen to the music.
BenjyTehJet 2 years ago
There is no music to listen to except for the orchestra, maybe. But as far as Lang Lang's playing, there's no music. He doesn't know how to feel music. On a documentary I was watching they said Beethoven's advice for piano was: push your fingers down, refrain from doing unnecessary movements, and make the instrument sing. He's pressing his fingers down, yes, however, he's making a ton of unnecessary movements, and he's not letting the instrument sing, he's banging the keys.
mario54671 2 years ago
And it's not completely subjective. The subjective part is stuff like what you see when you hear a certain piece, nobody can argue with that. HOWEVER, if a pianist has no musicality in his playing, saying Rubinstein, Horowitz, Richter, Yefim Bronfman are more brilliant pianists isn't really opinion. Lang Lang tries to hog the attention by doing these crazy movements to the point where nobody's paying attention to the music, they're paying attention to him.
mario54671 2 years ago
It is completely subjective. If you like what you see, that's fine. If you like what you hear that's fine. If you don't, that, is also fine. Different people like different things. And you cannot say their is no musicality in Lang Lang's playing. There are variations in speed, tone, dynamics etc etc. You can say, "I don't like the way he moves around like a circus monkey" by all means, and you don't have to like it, but please don't be so naive as to say that there is no musicality.
BenjyTehJet 2 years ago
Of course I can say he has no musicality, especially since I'm not the only one who thinks that. That's why they call him "Bang Bang". He basically only has two sounds, VERY loud, and soft. Pianists should be able to have many different colors and shades of softness and loudness. He can go very loud, because he harshly starts banging the keys, but he can't really go that soft. Listen to pianists like Yefim Bronfman, since he's the best pianist living today, and you'll see what I mean.
mario54671 2 years ago
He can't go that soft? Listen to him playing Leibestraum. And he can't do anything inbetween loud and soft? Listen to Rhapsody On A Theme by Paganini. Stlil you'll probably disagree, which proves that music is subjective, because, I like it and you don't. At the end of the day so what ha ha.
BenjyTehJet 2 years ago
No, that just proves that you haven't listened to other pianists like Yefim Bronfman play things like Beethoven Piano Concertos where he goes extremely soft during their second movements. :)
mario54671 2 years ago
How does that prove it? What if I don't like Yefim Bronfman's interpretation? Just because I think Lang Lang is better doesn't mean you have to. Just because you think Yefim Bronfman is better, doesn't mean I have to. THAT is why music is subjective. You are subject to the music you like, as am I.
