@clownishwargod1 This is definitely not the original track of the Maynard Ferguson version. First clue: No screaming high trumpet. Second clue: the audio and video match up perfectly until around the three trumpet solos. Even then it's fractions of a second and hardly noticeable. I don't see why you seem to think they don't match when they do. Just watch the solos and you can tell, the piano solo especially at 1:22.
@LifeExemplum SO true. Proffesionals never ever stop practising, as especially now there will always be someone better than you, so there is always room for improvement. The thing about Grade 8 is so true. I have grade 8 but there is a world of difference between me and a professional, and I am practising more now than before I passed the exam.
And on this piece, I don't think they were very tight.
This is a very great piece. This band took it at a different angle and really didn't give it any thought to blow some passion. All except the pianist. He did a good job with some of those scale runs. The horse winny was a nice touch lol. Sax solo threw me way off from the theme until the last note. Dang I wish I could played this piece in our high school band. Sure we wouldn't be as great as the original or this group, but it would be really fun just to take it and have fun with it.
I have no problem with the players, but after listening to Chip McNeill's rearrangement on the One More Trip to Birdland album, I have to say that I'm not the biggest fan of this particular arrangement.
MrMak2121 please upload videos of your HS band. If they play better then this wow! Greatest high school band in the country. I'll be waiting to see your group!
@MrMak2121 awwwww look everyone. a high schol kid who can't spell thinks his little band is better than a band made up from leading players, at the top of their game, from across the globe. awwww bless. I suppose you play it better than the original Maynard band as well?
@radda1234 Radda, you're going overboard. You do NOT know 13 year olds who are in this league. These guys are great players. It's just obvious that Bergeron, Miyashiro, a couple others, and of course the late, great Maynard are noticeably significantly better.
@radda1234 at 13 yrs old who the hell are you to say these players are not good. these are some of the best players in the jazz world. try listening to some real musicians next time before you rant about how your friend is better than someone like Wayne Bergeron and Eric Miyashiro. they may not be the best in the entire world but they are monster lead players and sure as hell deserve a shit load of respect.
To call this crap is going overboard, but the soloists certainly are not as good as Wayne Bergeron, Eric Miyashiro and some of the others I've heard. Especially the guy in the middle, Peter Olstad, who sounded pinchy at those high tones, as would the other 88% of trumpet players who can actually play that high, which of course is only about 10% of the trumpet players in the world.
This is pretty disappointing, I was hoping that for a maynard ferguson tribute concert, they would feature trumpet players that could play high with a full sound and that could play good, pete olstad was good and everything else was but steve shankmen and the other guy were not very pleasing, they should of put roger ingram up there, he would of blown them all away.
@selector111 Look Up "Manyard Fergeson Gonna Fly Now" Itzzz Sikkk Hahaha I Learned the first to trumpet solos :D haha imm barlyyy 15 idkk if thatzz guud orr not
@BlkNgga13 Kid, I have seen every maynard video on youtube, and have hundreds of recordings of his and other people. It is not that big of a deal if you can play that, I guess you must have good high chops but that doesn't matter as much, you need to be able to play it with a full sound and consistently and most of all musically, Maynard always did.
@selector111 Dawg im not gloating iight?? nd how would you know what kinda chops i have i could be a better trumpet player than you and idc if youve seeen everyone of his videoz guess what.. I have too! but how do i knoe that youve seen every one.. hmm?? it could just be a lie to make your self look good.. dude dont test me.. trust me you dont wanna go that way
@BlkNgga13 Your right I do not know how good you are but seeing as you don't have any videos and I have not heard of you doesn't make me think you can play a double b. Also believe me, I have seen every video anyone has put on youtube about maynard, I look them up and search for new ones in between practice sessions. It is great that you like maynard though.
@selector111 i dont have any videos because i cant put them up my computer has viruses and no matter how many times i try it wont work.. and good for you no one cares if youve seen EVERY video... dawg you set your own self up for this.. if youve seen every video it makes you seem like your obbsessed with himm and thats not cool it makes you seem like a follower.. ay being a professional musician i know your not somosed to copy anyones music your soposed to have yyou own style not everyone else's
@BlkNgga13 Who is Manyard, I said I listen to Maynard, go learn how to spell kid, you are 15. I like listening to Maynard, but I also like many other musicians like Wayne Bergeron, count Basie, Esperanza Spalding, and many more jazz and classical musicians, I am not obsessed I just like Maynard's music a lot and there is a lot of it. I have my own sound, when I play lead stuff I want to sound more like Wayne or Maynard, that isn't exactly what I sound like, but they have great sounds so why not.
@selector111 IM NOT FCKIN CALLING YOU A "DOG" FUCKIN IDIOT DAWG MEANS LIKE.. SIR OR MR soo dont fuckin trip iight?? if thats the only think you can say after all the shit i told you then you really shouldnt be a musician k???
why don't they just get Eric Miyashiro, wayne Bergeron, or pat hession. These players killed this wonderful song. They played with no power at all, and that's what this song need. POWER AND DRIVE! anyways...thx for posting.
this song is played very similar to the original. the original wasn't played with ridiculous power and drive all the way through, so neither is this one. The two actually sound very similar.
this is the original track put with a random video of the band... its not them

Nicely played; trumpet solo's were good but bit shaky on the very top notes.
That said, most players can't even reach those notes :)

@Baritone45 you just compared those guys to the two best lead trumpet players alive. lol can you play like that? lol

@hondarideralex No, I sounded pinchy on an E in the treble clef when I played trumpet (30 years ago). LOL
I was merely trying to tell jb168203 that he (and others below) were being overly picky to call this performance crap.

This is one of the best ever Maynard Ferguson songs (may he rest in peace) but this performance is crap!
