Brookssteff, you are correct on the fact that some of the old time pro hunters have taken elephant with small caliber rifles.

these days, its ilegal to take anything .30 or smaller to many countries in africa, so even if youre capable and youre rifle powerful enough, you wont have the opertunity to try it.

and for the record, it has been documented that an elephant can survive (if only for a breif moment.. long enough to kill the hunter) a shot through the heart with a 4 bore.

@fragarak Elephants hearts are massive, sometimes shots to the heart won't kill them at all. That's why most hunters go for head shots, one of the many reasons rifles got so big for elephant was because they have a honey comb skull, and it WILL NOT crack from being shot, so having as large of lead as possible to create a lot of skull fragment was needed. Yes it is possible to kill an elephant with somethig smaller, but we are not perfect. Legal minum is .375 diam, and .40 in some for big 5

@JtsGreene youre right about the elephants skull being very strong, to the point that a frontal brain shot on an african bull is concidered one of, if not the most difficult shots in the world (as far as hunting goes that is.) even the .600 NE is not a guarantee for that shot.

the point i was getting at is that a .308 is Not enough gun for use on an elephant or a buffalo. (as some one else claimed) some animals are tough as hell and even with right shot placement, nothing is ever 100%

Because Cape Buffalo that don't go down on the first shot like to chase down the shooter, kneel down on them with their front legs, and grind them into the dust. Having a heavy cartridge and proper shot placement improve the hunter's odds of survival. Can a buff be killed with something less? Sure, and you can go over Niagra Falls in a barrel too, but it's not advisable. A lot of those guns will never be used for big game, but many are, and the make hunting big game a much safer proposition.
