Alright lesson time. Can anyone explain why these perfectly good musicians would not prosper had they just started up their band looking and playing the way they did at the time this video was shot?
Per Dr John: "The song was written and recorded back in the early 1950s by a New Orleans singer named James Crawford... It was recorded in the 1960s by the Dixie Cups... but the format we're following here is Sugar Boy's original. The song was originally called 'Jockamo,' and it has a lot of Creole patois in it. It is Mardi Gras music, and groups who dressed up in far out Indian costumes came on as Indian tribes. That's dead and gone because there's a freeway where those grounds used to be. "
No, the Mardi Gras indians still exist. I've seen them. They dress up in fantastic costumes, and twice a year they parade around new orleans. If you ever go to Mardi Gras i definitely wouldn't miss them.
haha this is great, i haven't heard this song in something like 12 years! Actually, a camp leader used to play this song and I thought he made it up but then, 12 years later, i found out the Dead play it. its bloody great.
Happy Fat Tuesday! This show was insane!!

My third son was born on Valentine's Day. We named him Giacomo Starshine. The Giacomo part is from this song. The starshine is from, well, Hair.
