I have a lot of debates at work with christians, but so far have won as I cannot find one of them that admits to reading the bible. Cannot find not one who knew that at one time all christians were Roman Catholics. Cannot find one of them that have any idea of where their religion came from.
What's really weird for me is that I can't believe how much of a taboo it is in America! People in America actually have to "come out"? That's insane! Here in the UK we're like 45 % Atheist. Still not enough if you ask me, but even then it's easier to admit to being an atheist here than being religious. Because we consider it stupid, as we should. @baldieman64- Well I don't know about you but the despite the fact that you're right in saying we are supposed to have collective prayer in schools etc, the high-school I went to and most other schools never did this. Unless they are a Catholic or a private school, it never happened. America is far worse than UK in terms of religious dogma. also, the whole concept of a constitution is nonsense. Countries need to adapt and develop their laws not abide to out of date rules.

Yes, Americans have problems with the religious whackjobs but their constitution protects them to some degree. The frequency of amendments is a testament to it's value regarding underlying principles.
@baldieman64- I'm not denying that there is somewhat of a religious presence in most UK schools, especially in the primary schools which is worse, but at least we don't have to pledge allegiance to a flag, or be forced to pray to god. I don't think their constitution protects them at all, I mean it says in the constitution that there is to be separation of church and state and yet it's impossible for anyone not involved with a christian church to be in office.

There are lots of supreme court rulings but the upshot is: "Constitution forbids public school officials from directing or favoring prayer, students do not "shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate"
There's no statutory bar to office for non believers either. It's just impossible to garner votes without professing faith

The bible indicates (as you should know) that there are different creation ages. Right now this is the second age, Adam and eve were the first since they were in the day of creation. I think the #1 reason people are religious is that as a species it is almost instinctive to desire a 'parent' figure. As children we are cared for and nurtured, and when we grow up and face the harsh reality of life, we long for that again. There are many other reasons. For me, when I look at the vastness of the universe, I scoff at anyone who thinks this was all made 'just for us'. Add in the absolutely impossible stories religion has, you end up an Atheist, and grateful to be free.

@Khyrid True but I think it is safe to say that these things mentioned in the bible have become heightened significantly in recent times, especially the non belief in God. This is very serious because Jesus is definitely coming soon, it is a guaranteed fact. The Lord said that He is giving humanity time to come to Him and seek salvation through Him as He does not want one single person to perish due to non belief in Him and The Father.

During the roman empire people were thrown into gladiator events to die in front of a cheering crowd. Plagues wiped out cities, people lived short miserable lives. That was a terrible time. Being a “decent” person is a great start but God teaches us that good works alone does not win you favor in His eyes. Romans 3:20, Galatians 3:24, Galatians 3:11 and many others speak of this fact. It is by “Faith” that we will be saved. Our good deeds (along with faith) can only be measured or in line with the word of God because He is Good.

What's really weird for me is that I can't believe how much of a taboo it is in America! People in America actually have to "come out"? That's insane! Here in the UK we're like 45 % Atheist. Unless they are a Catholic or a private school, it never happened. America is far worse than UK in terms of religious dogma. also, the whole concept of a constitution is nonsense. Countries need to adapt and develop their laws not abide to out of date rules.

Yes, Americans have problems with the religious whackjobs but their constitution protects them to some degree. The frequency of amendments is a testament to it's value regarding underlying principles.

@baldieman64- I'm not denying that there is somewhat of a religious presence in most UK schools, especially in the primary schools which is worse, but at least we don't have to pledge allegiance to a flag, or be forced to pray to god. I don't think their constitution protects them at all, I mean it says in the constitution that there is to be separation of church and state and yet it's impossible for anyone not involved with a christian church to be in office.

@piemakesmelol They are not forced to pray in their state schools. It does happen but it's illegal under the first amendment.
There are lots of supreme court rulings but the upshot is: "Constitution forbids public school officials from directing or favoring prayer, students do not "shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate"
There's no statutory bar to office for non believers either. It's just impossible to garner votes without professing faith

@mirta000 evolution is just a theory. There is a lot of grey gaps. And evolution does not cancel out the bible may I add. The bible indicates (as you should know) that there are different creation ages. Right now this is the second age, Adam and eve were the first since they were in the day of creation. I knowledge there is a hierarchy relating from ancient butterflies to humans etc... But this doesn't speak "evolution" to me. To believe in god for the reason you claimed is not a true Christian.

Maybe you should start questioning gravity, relativity and thermodynamics next. We observe the phenomena and use facts to explain it. Phenomena - gravity, light, tornadoes, wind, tides, lightning. Spirituality isn't phenomena because there's no evidence for it. Therefore no theories for spirits and ghosts.

I think the #1 reason people are religious is that as a species it is almost instinctive to desire a 'parent' figure. As children we are cared for and nurtured, and when we grow up and face the harsh reality of life, we long for that again. There are many other reasons. For me, when I look at the vastness of the universe, I scoff at anyone who thinks this was all made 'just for us'. Add in the absolutely impossible stories religion has, you end up an Atheist, and grateful to be free.

Foxmorons seem to be right, regrettably there is no reliable statistics on the "rising numbers of the atheists". Voting "atheism first" is pretty much equals to not voting at all. In fact judging by the voting patterns atheism is on demise if you look at the last two US presidents. Upcoming election is probably going to be even worse - tea party religious zealots vs liberal religious zealots - how does one "votes atheism first"?.

Many Atheist may not believe in this truth but because I love ALL people I will continue to pray for the believer as well as the non-believers. @Khyrid True but I think it is safe to say that these things mentioned in the bible have become heightened significantly in recent times, especially the non belief in God. This is very serious because Jesus is definitely coming soon, it is a guaranteed fact. The Lord said that He is giving humanity time to come to Him and seek salvation through Him as He does not want one single person to perish due to non belief in Him and The Father.

@msdogooder Not really. When the Aztecs were around they frequently sacrificed thousands of people at a whim. During the roman empire people were thrown into gladiator events to die in front of a cheering crowd. Plagues wiped out cities, people lived short miserable lives. That was a terrible time. If you knew history at all you would realize how lucky you are to be alive today, even with all the BS in the world people are more decent nowadays than ever before. Don't believe everything you read.

@Khyrid (4)This makes perfect sense because there are MANY people right now who are evil and so far away from the Lord yet they do “decent” things all the time like give to the homeless, take care of their families, be kind to their friends. Some might even be willing to swear on the lives of their own children that this person is “good and decent” but I am telling the truth, God’s Truth when I say that a “decent” person without faith is not pleasing to the Lord.

The problem here is that we employ a very very different defenition of "evil". 'Evil' to you means "sinning according to the rules of the bible". We don't subscribed to your concept of "evil". And the irony is that you don't either, because you don't kill people who work on a sunday (I hope).

@Khyrid (3)“Good deed” based on worldly views or opinion (mans views)will always be flawed because what one person might consider as “good” the other could easily consider it to be “not good”. (Thus the reasons behind many wars, destruction, and other horrendous acts done by man). Because we were born of a sinful nature and Jesus the Son of God was born without sin, our goodness can only be measured by His word.

Being a “decent” person is a great start but God teaches us that good works alone does not win you favor in His eyes. Romans 3:20, Galatians 3:24, Galatians 3:11 and many others speak of this fact. It is by “Faith” that we will be saved. Our good deeds (along with faith) can only be measured or in line with the word of God because He is Good.

Matthew 11:28-30, Psalm 55:22, & 1 Peter 5:7 are just a few scriptures that speak of this. I pray that I was able to answer your questions. @Wi3dMaN (4) During the time when I wasn’t serious about The Lord things about Him did seem hard to understand or even “irrational” but as I began to grow in my faith, the Lord had literally lifted a veil from over my eyes and has blessed me with understanding that I never had before. He will also do the same for you all you have to do is ask Him and believe that He will do it (Pray to the Lord to help you believe if you need to). He is waiting patiently for you with Love.

I KNOW that I couldn’t have endured a lot of things in my life had it not been for the Lord’s presence. The Lord has blessed me with the opportunity to receive a Bachelors of Science degree and I also have a Masters of Arts degree. But my greatest achievement in life occurred the night I accepted the Lord as my Savior. It was at that moment that I was given life with the Lord.

@Wi3dMaN (1) Hi there, well it took great thought and reflection to decide to give my life completely to the Lord. It was/is a life changing decision, the best decision I’ve made in my life. It’s easy to live a “worldly” life based on pleasing fleshly desires, but living my life for the Lord requires me to deny the flesh and to instead live by The Truth which is God’s word. It is a growing process through prayer, studying the word and having faith that the Lord is always with me.
