When it comes to story lines, Anime is more diverse and can capture a wider audience. When it comes to quality and not cutting corners American Animation takes the crown. Those who screen one is better than the other probably can't draw any better than a stick figure and are talking out their ass.
Interesting, but I think Pokemon deserves at least a mention, It was (and still kinda is) ridiculously popular, and introduced much my generation as kids to anime. Also I think Disney's distribution of Studio Ghibli's films is a big thing.
Pretty interesting and well-done video, apart from the inordinate amount of focus on Shin-Chan - you spent more time on that than Akira, Princess Mononoke and Ghost in the Shell, all of which had far, far greater influence in the West, and to not mention Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z or Pokemon seems like a pretty glaring omission when talking about the history of anime in the West. Even in the realm of Adult Swim shows, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL or Inuyasha seem like far better topics than Shin-chan.
Japan sure has com a long way when they started anime in 1917. However, it maybe popular elsewhere but it isn't that popular due to the fact that our anime industry refuses to advertise them because they want to shut up about it.
Sadly some of the versions translated into other languages like Naruto or one piece are horribly cut and have some really meaningless parts in translation.
But thats nothing new, Saber Rider f.E was changed to that the guy with the horse becomes the mainechar instead of Colt.
Many Americans' first real exposure to anime came in '79 with Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato) and then '85 with Robotech (Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada).
These epic sci fi dramas far surpassed American animation of the time in every way and left a huge impression on American kids. I'm surprised you left them out.
These days, with the exception of Adult Swim, the anime that's brought over to American TV is mostly silly, card game-based shows.
@dbonanno anime is not based off card games it is based off japaness books called mangas then come then finaly after that comes the card games. so you are completly wrongh*
@dbonanno, i was much less knowledgable about the subject today then when i made this video, so i can see how those were major omissions from the video
when you first get into anime its hard to really understand it, cus like he said its from japan and its a really different culture, but I've know about japan long enoff to understand most of whats going on. am I alone on this?
Most anime before 2000 may have been poorly animated and/or badly synced sometimes, but I still enjoyed most of those shows a LOT more than the stuff they show nowadays... Ranma 1/2, Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, Lupin III, Case Closed, Dragonball, Dragonball Z (before fusion saga), Tenchi Muyo, and PLENTY others were some of the best in my book... I could always relate to them, and they gave me a good feeling when I watched them.

how could GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995) be the first Anime feature in cinemas in America when AKIRA ( in english ) was in Australian cinemas in 1988-89 ?
AKIRA like NAUSICAA has been dub into english twice.
anime on Australian TV in the late 70s/ early 80s - GIGANTOR, KIMBA, STAR BLAZERS, BATTLE OF THE PLANETS and a long forgotten show KUM KUM.
those were the cartoons we as kids use to talk about so i don't know where you get off saying Anime was ignored in the west until the 1993.

The anime of the 70s and 80s was much more cinematic and better animated than American TV animation up 'till the 90s, and it still is.
