I am skeptical as to how well this kind of thing would work live against a resisting opponent.

On the other hand such things are drills and not reality, and it would certainly be better to have those reflexes ingrained than not...

I had those thoughts too but you need to have a solid base ground to start with for most movements early in confortations begin with gross movements, either till the problem is resolved immediately or if the fight drags on more than one minute those smooth fluid movements will now go into play.
