Meiling is one of my favorite Touhou characters. Not sure why the fandom tends to put her down. Though I did read a doujin once that gave a reason for her somewhat laidback personality. It said that Meiling will only react once there is an actual threat to the mansion and its residents. If she allows someone to pass, that means they're not very dangerous.

Well, in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil she's fought by Reimu and Marisa. Marisa has the Master Spark which is... the Master Spark. Reimu is able to fight gods, celestials, and all manner of other beings stronger than the average yokai- and even if she doesn't always defeat them, she can bring the fight to a standstill.

So it's not that Meiling's weak, it's just that Reimu and Marisa are freakin' hax.

(Incidentally, her Yokai ability involves controlling colors, if I'm remembering things right.)
