  • miss john theodore

  • @chumanjames mister jon theodore

  • There was a time when a rock band tried to make non-rock music, and one scream was heard by all the world... the next comes in a residual noise...just echoes... ... what disappointment...GOliath...

  • Both Thomas And Jon are amazing drummers. Jon brings the groove thats so in the pocket its impossible to predict and replicate

Thomas brings the speed, intensity and sheer velocity that no one else can match. Both drummers suited the sound that the Volta were going for at the time and everybody? its called evolution so get over it Jon is gone, Thomas is here and i'm happy about it.

  • and now thomas is gone too!! :(

  • john elitch is the replacement i guess,,i kn0w that elitch is an israeli

  • @highlightmaterial DAVE Elitch is his name.

  • @The4thGuy : yah dave....sorry...

  • Thomas is gone too now

  • didnt find anything complex in this glad volta got rid of him loved there albums with him but thats it.

glad they have pridgen he brings the speed and intense palying they needed one thing i have to say guys is let go of the past it was good but like every musician u imporve and u mature in ur music as u grow u want something different

  • You're an idiot.

  • im glad you answered in such a retarded way didnt want to waste my time peace and love

  • I found every album since Deloused a let down, let's be honest about it. I think the volta are vanishing up their own arses. Ditching a proper producer like Rick Rubin was a mistake in my opinion. None of the records have had that phat warm sound since.

  • agreed, except frances the mute is one of the best albums of all time

  • who is playing bass here

  • looks like juan alderete!

  • I love Jon Theodore! Thomas' drumming with the Mars Volta is awesome as well, but for some reason, Jon and his huge Bonham kit just fit better. His grooves were just better imo and he didn't overplay as much as Thomas does (for good reason though).

Let me ask, he endorses Ludwig now correct? How did he get those Fibes? I want some, but can't seem to find any anywhere!

  • yikes

  • Ive been trying to find something out for a while now....and that is ...how does he get that trashy sound from that cymbal? I know he stacks them...and tried it...but...how does he do it? Does anyone know? PLEASE!!

  • I have my own version on my set that is similar to his.

It is best to use Chinese, crash. and splash cymbals.

On both mine and Theodore's, one or two of the cymbals have holes drilled in them.

Also, you will typically get the best sound if they are tightened together well so they move as one.

Also, you will notice that the bottomcymbals are placed with bell up, but the ones closest to the top are bell down. This is key.

  • His accent control is ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING

  • john bonham anyone?

  • Jon is the god of all drummers.

I love his work so much. And his hi-hat patterns on some songs are just friggin outstanding! I wish I could play just as good as him one day!

  • yeah, deloused is literally in my top 5 albums of all time.

  • Same here - I can't stop coming back to it. I personally think the reason the album is so good is because there is (appears to be anyway) a lot of thought put into it. Research this - it's an epic CD and essentially one song by design broken up by track numbers, all representing the dream-state of one of their friends' lives who got so messed up on drugs and eventually died from shooting rat poison.

  • Frances and The Widow just seemed, to me, to be trying to capitalize on the weird and wonderful that made Deloused so great, and they get it to some degree, but by their own the elements that are good in those albums don't hold enough substance to justify the MarsVolta-ique dropouts.

Just my opinion of course :D I couldn't be a bigger fan, but it's largely based off of their first work.

  • i miss jon

    he was fucking amazing

  • i think both drummers are good. I saw them both in concert. In my opinion jon is better. Thomas is good but i havent seen anything worth really jumping about....yet.

  • i don't know... after hearing some of the songs off the new cd, im going to have to give the nod to Thomas. John was good, but Thomas is a prodigy and he's lived up to his background so far... i really can't wait to hear the rest of the cd.

  • i recently just heard some new songs and i do have to say it did blow me away. very good indeed. I think id have to see them again as far as live performances go to in my opinion is better live. i think i also saw the bald guy who filled in for a little while too. he was pretty good too.

  • Ha, bro you're definately incorrect. Deloused is by far their best work, Frances is a solid number two. Everyone of the songs on Deloused is better than your "five reasons."

  • Agreed. The newest stuff is pretty comparable by what I've heard so far, but Frances the Mute was a letdown. It is a good album (but a band like TMV can't really release anything awful you know), and I think they could have done much better.

  • I actually think frances is just as good. I thought the same as you until a couple of weeks ago and then something just clicked and now i love it.

  • Dude I love frances man, it's one of my favorite albums. Listen to it a couple more times, if you're a volta fan it's sure to grow on you.

  • Deloused is great, don't get me wrong. Raw energy, complicated yet punky riffs, amazing vocal melodies, and the whole structure was just breath taking. But Frances the Mute is another story. I'll lay out 5 reasons why Frances is better.

    1.Cygnus

    2.The Widow

    3.L'via L'viaquez

    4.Miranda

    5.Cassandra Gemini

can't top that my friend, you cannot top that.

  • lol...Mars Volta is by far my favorite band and its been this way for a while. But as a matter of fact,I absolutely hated "The Widow".and that whole album i think is by far the weakest work they have done..

  • nice drumming, but thomas got him hands down. NO COMPETITION.

  • I've seen an interview that Omar and Cedric complained a lot bout Jon's commitment. He's got so much other hobbies like surfin; plus his unreliability - skipping band meetings, rehearsals n shit. They even said that on the meeting to declare Jon being official fired, he didnt turn up as well.

  • I think Jon Theodore has a side project right now with Zach De La Rocha. The Mars Volta is heading down the wrong path anyway. Each new albums' just a little worse than the previous. Don't get me wrong: The Mars Volta is the shit, but I think they dug themselves a damn deep hole.

  • im very excited for the next band jon will be in, im sure its going to be pretty sick

  • nah man isnt omar's brother on drums? the mars volta will NOT suffer. I dont think a band of that talent or Omar for that matter will let someone into the band that will slow em down. since he 'directs' the band and shit. I think de-loused till amputechture are all good albums that do not sound the same each record. good job tmv!

  • Everybody thinks this is amazing and this is not even his best stuff. The Mars Volta will suffer musically because he is not in the band anymore.

  • I dunno I hear Thomas Pridgen is pretty solid

  • thirdeye22. I know johnny and thats NOT the reason why he left the band. Don't talk about things you dunno bro..

  • and you dont jon(cause first place it would be jonny not johnny, he spells it jon) so now your both liying. If u read it was i quit and you fired sorta thing. Omar didnt like what he was doing, and Jon didnt like what Omar was making him do, (playing parts when he was physically ill). There the record is straight. and yes i sure do fuckin miss him

  • That fuckin true. That's why he quit that band and went surfing instead for his experience, a vacation if you wanna call it.

  • johnny is the bass player bro. geez. Or should I call him JUAN. You guys can believe what you want but I know the real season, i care less if you think im lying or not

  • Jon Theodore = ex drummer, Juan Alderete de la Pena = bass player. What IS the reason he left then?

  • John was fired. they only replaced him when they found Thomas Pridgen (Thanks to Juan), who is John times 3. John was only in it for the money and wasnt really interested in the music. Thomas is. if you havent heard him, look him up. =redic.

  • Jon is a ledgend, you dont know shit WhiskeyOktober, Thomas is not half the drummer Jon was, He left because The Mars Volta was heading down the wrong track, Note, Albums have been getting consistantly worse scince De-Loused.

  • i don't say that john is a bad drummer, but if you think Thomas isn't 1/2 the drummer John is, you obviously haven't seen/heard any recent live concerts. i got my info from an interview with Juan. supposedly John was only in it for the money and was skipping every practice to surf or something...hated the music. he didn't leave though. he was fired. 100%

  • Frances > Deloused

  • yea right...

  • hey plz tell me why he left then cause he is sick on the drums

  • that was ok cool

  • only reason he was really kicked out was cause he was to good stole the attention...

  • What show is this from? I wanna check out the full vid...

  • Cedric looks freakishly tall in this video!

  • He's frighteningly good but I think new guy will be good I mean Cedric and Omar aren't going to choose someone who can't play besides he used to play with them before!

  • come back jon!

  • so sad hes out of the band now. too bad he was amazing

  • closest i've seen to bonham in a while. pretty damn awsome

  • ye sweet, not the mainstream britney spears band shit
