In terms of whether or not he was first to enter to Stadium - The fact is ; he entered as second, there is a documentary which I watched many years ago that shows all this - The documentary was televised by HBO in US. As to the rules governing the Olympic games, I can only tell you that back in 1960 those rules were very different then Today !
Listen carefully starting at 1:22. He was only able to win one time after putting shoes back on. He injured himself in 1968 at 17Km with shoes on. Shoes are the problem. Slip on some Vibram FiveFingers and make your feet strong and happy again.
With respect and admiration for Abebe, but in this race he entered the stadium as second ( 2) - the 1 st runner was Abdessalam Radi from Morocco who was also running barefoot, but went in the opposite direction or clockwise !
Though, I am happy, as an Ethiopian, that Abebe won, I just couldn't help but imagine the frustration of Abdessalam. How come the guards didn't tell him the right direction? Or was knowing the direction part of the race? Wow! I really felt sad for him. It is frustrating and regrettable loss.
wow, you are living in your complete fantasy world, don't you morocco ? Abebe won this marathon fair and square! actually not wearing a shoe, he gave everybody an advance including your abdessalam. Check this Vids

He passed him way before and he has shoe on too. lol you are funny as hell.
@ryahya1, that's bull. if he had runned the wrong direction and crossed the line he would have been disqualified immediately, that never happened 'cause what you wrote is a fabrication. Here is the truth, first of all he didnt run barefoot and second he crossed the line 26 seconds later behind ABEBE BIKILA. so stop fabricating a lie and trashing the name of our great ETHIOPIAN hero.
His life was so short...

@ryahya1 and third look at the footage carefully, does it look like the crossline were in a stadium? It looks like Asphalt rather than track.
