In reality, this actually is a pretty happy ending. The Earth was saved, Noriko and the other girl survive and they return to Earth as heroes. As it goes, it was about the best situation they could achieve.
I remember watching this whole show until dawn in 9th grade on a shitty little TV on headphones in my bedroom and bawling like a little girl ... and dammit I started up again while writing this comment. Love Gunbuster.
@Medowin Haha lol, good point! Damn you, Studio Gainax and your anime endings!^^ Always so depressing, can't they ever make just a normal happy ending, just once!
I mean, it was really nice for them to add more or less realistic stuff like space time. But did it have to be so drastic? And i also thought the warp space would protect them from stuff like this. But when i saw the date in ep5 i already knew "oh no, please, dont let it end like this, with them still young and everyone dead"
I like and own this show, but I get upset when I watch this because they never really show the aliens or anyone ever getting killed, like that Smith guy, he just disappeared. Maybe I am wrong but I watched it a many times to see if missed something but still never seen the aliens or when Smith gets killed.
@JENDALL714 You don't have to show a death in order for it to be dramatic. In fact, that we don't even know how or when Smith died is part of what makes that event so distressing. One moment, Smith is talking to Noriko. The next, there's silence. No sign of his mech anywhere. Noriko is alone and she doesn't know how or why. As for the aliens, those big organic things that the space fleet was fighting were not spaceships. Those where the aliens. Yes, they're that big.
It took watching AMV to make me wonder what gunbuster 1 & 2 were and I have been watching anime for over 15 years! I wish someone had recommended it sooner. I must thank Nostromo for sparking my interest!
Gainax! We want this kind of emotive and epic ending in the final Evangelion movie... Don't fuck it like in Evangelion series... I WANT A GOOD ENDING THIS FUCKING TIME!!!! MAKE ALL THE EVANGELIONS GATTAI!!!!!
@ScarlettSephiroth or atleast make it less mind rapey seriously the only thing I can tell you about the final 2 ep,s of Eva is that I watched them and that I should have taken a philosophical lesson from it. (the only thing I gathered is that you should never run away and Emo,s should never pilot giant mech,s)
It is a happy tears sort of ending. Sad that they gave up everything short of their lives and each other to save humanity. Happy in that the world remembered them even after so much time passed.
i worry i may never find a complete version of this ever again..........arigato gunbuster sayonara. if anyone knows where to get this on dvd please tell me
@IamEVILBLANKA Find a nearby anime club or check out a convention. Even though this is a very old OVA copies are still locatable. I even fond old legal copies on Ebay.
@Violenteers Haven't seen Diebuster yet, but Gurren Lagann's ending can't hold a candle to Gunbusters ending; although on the whole I actually prefer Gurren Lagann to Gunbuster.
I loved gunbuster when i first saw it like 10 or so years ago and i still cry. but then i get upset because i read too much into it thinking, "what do they do now? 1000's of generations have gone by and everyone they left were gone a split second after they left to fight."
As I can't seem to find this for love nor money on these shores, can someone please reassure me that the device that caused the massive detonation at the start of the video incorperated the planet Jupiter somehow? It's been years since I've seen it.
@TheTrevorGoodchild It is. They used Jupiter as the core of Buster Machine 3, the black hole bomb. It was what Gunbuster was standing on when Noriko ripped the chest plate off and shoved the degeneration reactor into the slave unit...or that was the impression I got. If that whole floating down was suppose to be inside Jupiter...well, even Gunbuster's physics confuses me now and then. >.>
un gran momento en la historia del anime y uno de los mejores y mas emotivos finales lleno de sacrificio, tristeza, soledad y de mucha felicidad.gracias Hideaki Anno y Gainax
This is one of the greatest anime moments. EVER. I mean, look at the magnitude of what it´s going on. They give up on everything to save the earth and they friends. They manage to survive, they spend several days warping, wondering if they made it. Then they realice they are 12000 years away from their time, their friends, that´s really scary if you think about it.And then when it looks that everything is lost, those simple 2 words really hit on you with all it´s significance...
@aki2065 Not only is the last bit in colour in the original vhs release, but some of the music was changed in episode 1 because they couldn't secure the rights.
According to the story of DieBuster (GunBuster 2), the original gunbuster was forgotten sometime during the 12000 years, and human kind only rediscovered the history after the event described in DieBuster.
Gunbuster was so much better than Diebuster but I still think they need to make a new series with Lalc and Noriko both in it and a new Gunbuster and the old aliens come back like the ones that Noriko an Kazumi fought becuase they seemed a lot tought than the ones Nono and Lalc had to deal with except a couple of them
I remember the first time I saw this scene. It totally caught me off guard and my eyes became teary. I still couldn't believe an anime could make me cry.
The sheer scale of this is what gets me. Think about it - TWELVE THOUSAND YEARS. Twelve thousand years ago, writing hadn't been invented. The ice age was just ending, the Neolithic beginning. And not only were Noriko and Kazumi remembered for that long, so was that one little promise that Jung made at the end. Humanity waited over a hundred centuries to fulfill that promise. Utterly unprecedented.
I can only hope that humanity truly does become like this in the future.
I love this ending. At first I felt like they half-assed it and I wanted more, but after watching it a couple more times I understood the meaning of this kind of ending: humanity has a strong will to continue living and to grow and prosper. As many times as I've seen this ending, it never loses its touch nor its capability to make me tear up. Gunbuster 1&2 are by far some of the best animes ever made.
Great ending. I never thought of this as a sad ending. Bittersweet maybe, but I feel it leaned more towards sweet. I mean they saved humanity and were thanked for it, that's pretty happy to me. :D
