  • In reality, this actually is a pretty happy ending. The Earth was saved, Noriko and the other girl survive and they return to Earth as heroes. As it goes, it was about the best situation they could achieve.

  • ok so they made it back. 12000 years later. family/friends/etc all dead/etc. suicide much?

  • Why isn't there any color? On my old vhs when the the earth lights up the B&W scheme turns to full color.

  • 最後は「WELCOME HOM∃」とかにして欲しかった

  • What a beautiful ending

  • whoa I didn't know Hideaki Anno was the director of this he is truly a God Neon Genesis Evangelio and Gunbuster ftw!!

  • I remember watching this whole show until dawn in 9th grade on a shitty little TV on headphones in my bedroom and bawling like a little girl ... and dammit I started up again while writing this comment. Love Gunbuster.

  • Best anime ending I have seen.

  • fantasic

  • They're in a for a big surprise when they go back to earth and see what Shinji did after the Third Impact.

  • @Medowin Haha lol, good point! Damn you, Studio Gainax and your anime endings!^^ Always so depressing, can't they ever make just a normal happy ending, just once!

I mean, it was really nice for them to add more or less realistic stuff like space time. But did it have to be so drastic? And i also thought the warp space would protect them from stuff like this. But when i saw the date in ep5 i already knew "oh no, please, dont let it end like this, with them still young and everyone dead"

  • ;u;

  • Why do I always remember this scene in colour? I've watched it so many times, but, every time, I'm surprised that it's in black and white.

  • @Jojoblurp They also added it to diebuster from a different perspective.

  • "w-where are the lights?" ;_;

  • I like and own this show, but I get upset when I watch this because they never really show the aliens or anyone ever getting killed, like that Smith guy, he just disappeared. Maybe I am wrong but I watched it a many times to see if missed something but still never seen the aliens or when Smith gets killed.

  • @JENDALL714 You don't have to show a death in order for it to be dramatic. In fact, that we don't even know how or when Smith died is part of what makes that event so distressing. One moment, Smith is talking to Noriko. The next, there's silence. No sign of his mech anywhere. Noriko is alone and she doesn't know how or why. As for the aliens, those big organic things that the space fleet was fighting were not spaceships. Those where the aliens. Yes, they're that big.

  • this has done me in again, its beautiful. amazing ending to one of the finest ova series ever. ................THANK YOU GUNBUSTER, SAYONARA

  • This is seriously not one of the most amazing endings to an anime, people. This is one of the most amazing endings to ANYTHING, not just an anime ;D

  • I normaly don,t cry about anime,s but this kinda makes me cry

    MANLY TEARS!

  • WELCOMヨ HOMヨ

  • It took watching AMV to make me wonder what gunbuster 1 & 2 were and I have been watching anime for over 15 years! I wish someone had recommended it sooner. I must thank Nostromo for sparking my interest!

  • Gainax! We want this kind of emotive and epic ending in the final Evangelion movie... Don't fuck it like in Evangelion series... I WANT A GOOD ENDING THIS FUCKING TIME!!!! MAKE ALL THE EVANGELIONS GATTAI!!!!!

  • @ScarlettSephiroth or atleast make it less mind rapey seriously the only thing I can tell you about the final 2 ep,s of Eva is that I watched them and that I should have taken a philosophical lesson from it. (the only thing I gathered is that you should never run away and Emo,s should never pilot giant mech,s)

  • i first saw this anime in 93, and it's still one of the best anime endings i've ever seen, hands down.

  • You don't need a budget to have an ending that can induce manly (or tender, depending on the person) tears.

  • WヨLCOMヨ HOMヨ

  • Never fails to make me cry, Jung kept her promise!

"I'll be there to say welcome home, when you come back."

  • 每次看到这里都会泪流满面呢..

  • This is the only piece of fiction (let alone anime) that has ever made me cry happy tears.

  • It is a happy tears sort of ending. Sad that they gave up everything short of their lives and each other to save humanity. Happy in that the world remembered them even after so much time passed.

  • I still want the complete series on Blu Ray. This is one of the classic animes you MUST own in the most pristine condition possible.

  • First anime ending makes me cry!!!

    This is awansome!!!

  • I haven't watch this for a while, but when I found this vid and remembered the final scene. I cried when the lights saying "WELCOME HOME" popped up.

Gunbuster will always be an important piece of animation history, no matter what.

  • Excellent.

I've seen about 200-300 different anime titles over the last 16 years, and I would say this is one of the top two or three endings I've EVER seen.

  • gets to you even a scrote like me.

i worry i may never find a complete version of this ever again..........arigato gunbuster sayonara. if anyone knows where to get this on dvd please tell me

  • @IamEVILBLANKA Find a nearby anime club or check out a convention. Even though this is a very old OVA copies are still locatable. I even fond old legal copies on Ebay.

  • Best ending ever. Gainax have never pulled off a bittersweet ending like this one since.

  • @ExileOnPrincesSt Except in Diebuster and Gurren Lagaan.

  • @Violenteers Haven't seen Diebuster yet, but Gurren Lagann's ending can't hold a candle to Gunbusters ending; although on the whole I actually prefer Gurren Lagann to Gunbuster.

  • Banzai to time dilation!!

  • This is the perfect ending to an excellent show. I love how this flows into the end of Diebuster.

  • @shad0ki11 Me too! They both are classics worth having on every anime/mecha otaku's shelves.

  • To think that the ending of Diebuster and the Ending of Gunbuster interconnect like this is...mindblowing

  • Takaya Noriko: My first year in school ended in me exposing my bosom to the earth peoples of 14000 AD. It was fun.

  • I loved gunbuster when i first saw it like 10 or so years ago and i still cry. but then i get upset because i read too much into it thinking, "what do they do now? 1000's of generations have gone by and everyone they left were gone a split second after they left to fight."

    dumb me

  • @mrssiordia06 i think that's part of the point. they've earned the love of all humanity, but they've sacrificed all their human relationships.

  • Manly fucking tears

  • 12000 years away

    mind-blowing prospect

  • Endings don't get much better than this.

  • too brilliant for words. i fell in love with gunbuster years ago and still love it now

  • オカエリナサイ

  • As I can't seem to find this for love nor money on these shores, can someone please reassure me that the device that caused the massive detonation at the start of the video incorperated the planet Jupiter somehow? It's been years since I've seen it.

  • @TheTrevorGoodchild It is. They used Jupiter as the core of Buster Machine 3, the black hole bomb. It was what Gunbuster was standing on when Noriko ripped the chest plate off and shoved the degeneration reactor into the slave unit...or that was the impression I got. If that whole floating down was suppose to be inside Jupiter...well, even Gunbuster's physics confuses me now and then. >.>

  • "Welcome home" mus be a gainax phrase since that's what Lillith said to Rei

  • Crowning moment of awesome.

  • manly tears... ;_;

  • Manly tears have been shed for an anime with female characters.

  • RT: Manly tears have been shed for such an emotive and touching ending in an anime with female characters.

  • You should all see the Honneamise dvd set. The subtitles are different and the ending changes to color after the "Welcome Back" sign appears.

  • Most touching end i've ever seen. Really marvellous.

  • anyone know the ending song?

  • It is called "Toki no Kawa wo Koete" [時の河を越えて].

  • Thanks!!!

  • I have the US Renditions tape of this.

  • un gran momento en la historia del anime y uno de los mejores y mas emotivos finales lleno de sacrificio, tristeza, soledad y de mucha felicidad.gracias Hideaki Anno y Gainax

  • Onee-sama ;_;

  • This is one of the greatest anime moments. EVER. I mean, look at the magnitude of what it´s going on. They give up on everything to save the earth and they friends. They manage to survive, they spend several days warping, wondering if they made it. Then they realice they are 12000 years away from their time, their friends, that´s really scary if you think about it.And then when it looks that everything is lost, those simple 2 words really hit on you with all it´s significance...

  • Why is the last episode in black and white?

  • Hideaki Anno.

  • Anno likes to have confusing stuff in his anime. like Evangelion.

  • This part is changed to color briefly in the Gunbuster movie

  • Originally released version (1990) by U.S. Rendition, did change to color when Noriko and Kazumi abandoned the mecha to land on the planet.

  • yeahj. I own that release.

  • @aki2065 Not only is the last bit in colour in the original vhs release, but some of the music was changed in episode 1 because they couldn't secure the rights.

  • indeed!! i think he likes the complexity :)

  • What's confusing? After 12000 years, Jung's descendants kept her promise to say 'welcome back' when Noriko and Kazumi came home.

  • No it's about "Why isn't this colored" Hell even the final huge battle was not fully animated.

  • That's what we like to call "Gainax blows their budget too early (episode 5, to be specific)"

  • that gainax for you, they have a long history of doing that.

  • According to the story of DieBuster (GunBuster 2), the original gunbuster was forgotten sometime during the 12000 years, and human kind only rediscovered the history after the event described in DieBuster.

  • Gunbuster returned home.

    After 12,000 years. ;___;

  • I gotta admit...it makes me tear up when I see it too.

Ever notice how similar the stories of Armageddon and Gunbuster are?!?

  • Dammit!! what happened afterwards??? That's been bothering me for 20 years!! lol

  • Diebuster, I'm guessing.

  • Wait, no, nevermind. Diebuster's ending was Gunbuster's ending from whatsherfaces perspective.

  • Gunbuster was so much better than Diebuster but I still think they need to make a new series with Lalc and Noriko both in it and a new Gunbuster and the old aliens come back like the ones that Noriko an Kazumi fought becuase they seemed a lot tought than the ones Nono and Lalc had to deal with except a couple of them

  • I remember the first time I saw this scene. It totally caught me off guard and my eyes became teary. I still couldn't believe an anime could make me cry.

  • Daamn, I always cry at this scene..now it happened again. "Welcome home".

  • The sheer scale of this is what gets me. Think about it - TWELVE THOUSAND YEARS. Twelve thousand years ago, writing hadn't been invented. The ice age was just ending, the Neolithic beginning. And not only were Noriko and Kazumi remembered for that long, so was that one little promise that Jung made at the end. Humanity waited over a hundred centuries to fulfill that promise. Utterly unprecedented.

I can only hope that humanity truly does become like this in the future.

    Till all are one.

  • That's deep man.. I watched this anime a number of times, and I didn't know about such reference towards the human ability to communicate..

  • Every time

    Every damn time

    "Welcome Home"

  • I love this ending. At first I felt like they half-assed it and I wanted more, but after watching it a couple more times I understood the meaning of this kind of ending: humanity has a strong will to continue living and to grow and prosper. As many times as I've seen this ending, it never loses its touch nor its capability to make me tear up. Gunbuster 1&2 are by far some of the best animes ever made.

  • Awesome. I have to admit I got teary eyed too when I first saw it. Diebuster's ending put a great big smile on my face.

  • HOW DARE I CRITICIZE GAINAX AMIRITE

  • "Welcome home"

And the end of Diebuster makes cry too.

  • @MxM93 the end of diebuster makes me cry too — but only because it reactivates the emotions of the end of gunbuster.

  • Score by Kenji Kawai - such a legend!

  • The OST is actually done by Kohei Tanaka. lol.

  • CRY!

  • Tears are coming!

  • fuuuuuck gets me every time

  • dito

  • Great ending. I never thought of this as a sad ending. Bittersweet maybe, but I feel it leaned more towards sweet. I mean they saved humanity and were thanked for it, that's pretty happy to me. :D

  • i'm cryed although it's not sad...

  • Watch diebuster, then you'll cry.

  • @gavrila81

You cried because it's beautiful. That's called Art.

  • @gavrila81 when you think about everything and everybody they know is long dead (they stayed away for 1200 years in earth time)

  • @pearlmilkteaman Its sad Because Takaya & Amano wont see their friends anymore and Gunbuster is destroyed....they arrive 12,000 years later.. ='''(

  • See okinawa from space? Well not today Lawl, Gunbuster was sad, too bad. A lot of people wanted a happier ending, with gunbuster not getting completely destroyed? Too bad, liked it.

  • The only film to ever make me want to cry....
