I tried googling it and only found that in some instances in California is illegal to apply foam to skin with hands, which is completely opposite of what you said. :) Of course, any proffesional barber should have surgical gloves and several sets of brushes and razors.
Uhmmm - I'm not quite sure that this was a good shave at all....... think the barber needs way more practice in using an open blade - also I think it was pretty obvious the guy was dying when the extremely hot steaming towels were applied to his face.

@vangard213 It's called a safety razor. Most people use them now a days because they fold in on themselves, making them easier to transport and they can also fold out to give you the most options to get a comfortable grip

His way of shaving looks messy. I don't think that's the best way, but as long as his customers are satisfied... I'm a bit disappointed because he's the first barber I've ever seen using a bloody sharp Feather straight razor, and it could have been quite a show. Good luck with your barbershop.
When I was stationed out in Cali when I was in the Navy, my buddies and I had a few days leave off base and we were walking around and saw this place. I said, "Hey, let's go in." So we did and I so wish they had a place back here in Boston. It was so relaxing. They give you a beer while you get a haircut and a shave.

Did you use the witch-hazel with a HOT towel? It just looked like it was smoking when you put it on him. Might have been because it was cold, IDK. I was always taught that you use hot, pre shave, to open the pores/soften the hair, & cold, post shave, to close all the pores or any micro cuts, so the astringent would kill any germs on TOP of the skin, but not get into the skin to irritate it/cause razor burn.

Y'know, they've just NEVER stopped doing this kind of thing in Japan. I just had the same treatment today - hot lather, hot towels, straight razor shave, lotion, a trim of the eyebrows, a head and shoulder massage - and a cool 1940s cut that pomps up rockabilly style in a second. My barber is an artist. I love all this traditional stuff.

How am I wrong when I going for stateboard and in my school they teach us the 14 steps and how you should hold the razor properly while doing the steps. He still gives a good shave but if he's trying to show the stepa.

When I was stationed out in Cali when I was in the Navy, my buddies and I had a few days leave off base and we were walking around and saw this place. I said, "Hey, let's go in." So we did and I so wish they had a place back here in Boston. It was so relaxing. They give you a beer while you get a haircut and a shave.
It was the best haircut and shave I've ever had. Ever!

Did you use the witch-hazel with a HOT towel? It just looked like it was smoking when you put it on him. Might have been because it was cold, IDK. I was always taught that you use hot, pre shave, to open the pores/soften the hair, & cold, post shave, to close all the pores or any micro cuts, so the astringent would kill any germs on TOP of the skin, but not get into the skin to irritate it/cause razor burn.

Y'know, they've just NEVER stopped doing this kind of thing in Japan. I just had the same treatment today - hot lather, hot towels, straight razor shave, lotion, a trim of the eyebrows, a head and shoulder massage - and a cool 1940s cut that pomps up rockabilly style in a second. My barber is an artist. I love all this traditional stuff.

How am I wrong when I going for stateboard and in my school they teach us the 14 steps and how you should hold the razor properly while doing the steps. He still gives a good shave but if he's trying to show the stepa.
