  • What kind of alternator is this. 1-wire self exiting or other type?

I'm trying to build something similar i got custom made 1:14 chain drive, but i have 2 wire (Batt. and field) any ideas how to make this one usable? :D

  • @CeleronS1 No it uses a low wattage resitor to feed a tiny bit to field initially around 0.4-0.6 Amp worked well., those 2 wire are great in a car, but they do cut in at later higher-rpm than normally, Drive wise you are about spot on, 10: or higher if possible like you plan is best, so it will cut in as lower wind speed as possible (the most common).

  • @wind4watts Thank you for fast replay, actually i got my alternator started with trimmer :D , and possibly i will use 1:20 pulley drive. Will see.

  • Beware Missouri Wind and solar's PMA- They do not work. I have 2 of them and neither of them worked as promised. No service either!!!

  • Great job!:)

  • did you make any modifications to it?

and if you connect resistences to rotor coil does it produce electric current at slower speeds?

  • @liviooo18 No unfortunately not, on a car-auto they typically work at 2,500 to 6,000 shaft rpm, A good purpose made pmg (especially like the one in my videos) makes pretty good power even from 150-200rpm, you can strap a 5-6 blade plastic futurenergy fast type rotor on 7 wuill make power 'out of the box' almost, only problem is cost though there's a few available now more reasonable.

  • Humm how about 3-4 alternators with a serpentine belt and a belt tensioner.

  • @frankt04 Could do if you had a very large area rotor, each pulley adds friction, another way is to use a standard 1500rp Commercial alternator, a big rotor & gear it right up, one guy in Canada I think used a car axle, and further gearing up top, a big one with French flag colours on tail. did a few Videos, though believe he had no furling so lost the blades eventually, made great power in his Vids though.

  • :D>

  • MMM just giving me a idea looking at this video cheers

  • @hondaman900f These auto style alternators use a small amount of electricity to 'switch it on' in effect, usually this goes on when you turn the car key on, but needs to do do it on it's own, or there is a small trickle of power wasted as it would be 'on' or o standby even when there was no wind =battery drain. P.m.a.'s are good as they don't need any field at all.

  • have you checked out other designs besides the standard 3 blade propeller?

  • i like those blades......nice !

  • You need to install a butterfly switch. when the wind spins upthe blades to cut in speed the switch will activate the rotor circuit. ifyou put it sideways to the blades, the speed of the blades will activate it, and not the wind. therefore the blades will reach cutin speed before the switch is activayed, and the rotor will not drain the battery when the wind is still. youre welcome

    muddy

  • Hi muddy do you mean a centrifugal switch, yes? absolutely right I did make & fit one a while ago, suprising how well it worked once set up , but it already triggers in just when windy, which as you said is what we need, once running it supplies all it's own, doesn't use anything but makes power, thanks for looking/ and your positive suggestion-input.

  • any time.

    MUDDy

  • Might need more than a squirt of used engine oil to quieten that horrific thump from the main bearing ;-)

  • Yep that knocking could be terminal, white metal never any good !!!.

  • What if you reversed the field? the slower it spins the freeier it spins (field gets weaker) and the faster it spins the stronger the field becomes acting as a brake to over speed? The opposite of how an alternator works on an engine. (the faster the engine speed the weaker the field and vice versa. Let me know what you think. Good video. I have been thinking about doing just what you have done...using car alternators as a cheap source of power generation. Easily repairable to.

  • Fireye2012, Yes your suggestion would be ideal/ perfect fot this!. I have had it going well off a 30Amp scale, too much for rotor whichwas getting'stalled dead' every 3-5 seconds, also had it running happily from10-25mph with a steadily rising /falling output, like a pma, so am almost 'there' so to speak. I now know how much power the field/ rotor needs to 'deliver',just setting it there, i altered it today, takes time and some patience, thanks for looking and your input aswell!!.

  • It would be sweet if you could engage a second alternator only during high wind speeds. You might be able to do that electrically. You shouldn't have that much loading torque if the circuit is broken?

  • Yes that would be really good, starts up very easily as field doesn't load it until it's' 'motoring', i need to quieten it right down, am seeing to that now as time allows

  • nice natural energy converter. How the wind speeds and blade length?

  • Hi nahdiru , I wanted smaller diameter blades as (generally) they rotate faster, the wide chord & shape really helps keep the torque/rpm up when coming on load, blades are 90cm long each , 2meter diameter, quite strong been up in 35+ mph so far with no problems, and shuts the field coil power off automatically when there is no wind also. Thanks for your interest!.

  • No ventilation needed as there are 2 internal impellers. I want to tinker with electronics setup until optimum.

  • sexy beast that is.
