actually there're some really good songs in that album but i prefer her previous because i think the music here is too beautiful....it seems she's trying to do something really beautiful and it ens being kitsch sometime. i prefer the previous albums because she made kind of contrast with rock, so it was not so sweet and overdone...anyway, this weekend i'll see her on live and the experience will be different, i think (i saw her on live before but it was just she playing electric guitar)
Yeah, I'm not at all keen on My Brightest Diamond. Nothing there I really want to revisit and, unlike you, I'm not keen on her voice. I'm not sure why I'm not at this stage, but there is something that bugs me about it.
But anyway, I do really enjoy your reviews. Even though I don't always agree with them.
But I can also appreciate your statements about Brave the War, and the last track being AMAZING. I can't help but wonder if part of that isn't due to their context being surrounded by tracks with big arrangement. Thanks for the review!!! It's good for more people to find out about her stuff.
There seems to be a growing sub-genre of pop music that is trying to marry rock/pop aesthetic with classical. (Olafur Arnalds, Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, at times Sigur Ros, even possibly Mogwai) I feel this is admirable and can produce something really interesting! Out of all these projects, the growing trend tends to be major chord whole notes on strings, or soft piano scales. I feel MBD really upped the game with this album by not doing that, but doing something more complex and intresting
I definitely like this album more than you do. Thanks for reviewing it though because I had never heard of My Brightest Diamond before. This was a good find.
I think heavy instrumentation can be a swank technique when used sparingly (A Day in the Life, some Feist, some Sufjan Stevens, Belle and Sebastian, etc.) or create a plush wall of what-the-hell when its blaring at me constantly. At that point you might as well put rock'n'roll away and write symphonies.
I felt a lot of Joanna Newsom influence with the string arrangements. How they would weave in and out of songs. But this album clashed, musically. Each instument on its own was pretty, but together, just didn't sound right. I didn't like the guitar, either. It was too poppy, and sounded like it was generated by computers.
Good review. I don't disagree with your instinct that her every musical choice or component might not be necessary. Wardon is like a orchestral Imogen Heap, who both make their musical unecessarily busy. But I liked High Low Middle. And I definitely agree She Does Not Brave the War is stunning. Music is lucky to have her in the mix.
I feel sad not to hear your single sole opinion on the last björk record (with all due respect to yr lovely girlfriend) since I've been following you since 2009 and was looking forward to hearing yr opinion to one of her efforts. I just feel you'd have judged differently on your own. more to your standards. love!
@Hagush Well, I can't say I really had any different standards when reviewing it with my girlfriend. I had already decided how I felt about the album before she even listened to it enough to decide how she felt. We even made sure not to talk about the album prior to the video, so what you ultimately ended up seeing was an unplanned conversation, really.
Also, I wouldn't mind a White Denim review, just to hear your opinion. I saw them live because they were at the Manchester Orchestra and The Dear Hunter show at Stubbs in October. Gotta say... they ruined the show. Total buzz kill half way through. Manchester was great, and The Dear Hunter was freaking flawless (no surprise) and even the opener "Little Hurricane" was pretty interesting.
On November 8th the Animals as Leaders album is released, if you get a chance I recommend it, I don't know maybe it's too over produced, or something, I don't know. It may push you into some different territories if you were to give it a show, but again, maybe it's just too pretty for metal for you.
I think that maybe the fact that the over-instrumentation makes the songs harder to access and enjoy might be on purpose. A statement about vulnerability and bravado.
Hey man. I was watching your great reviews of bongripper and electric wizard albums, and felt that it would be really honoring if you would take a swing at my bands debut album. Maybe it's just me Anthony, but sometimes I think you are more critical with female musicians than male musicians. I know it's your opinion, but you do review more albums by male musicians than albums from female musicians. If this album had been done by a guy, would you have given it a 6? I just thought this was a pretty good album....just throwing a question out there for you.
@enyafreak2007 I dunno. I can't say that's necessarily true. Some of my favorite albums of this year were created by women. PJ Harvey? Cheslea Wolfe? St. Vincent? Matana Roberts? Plus, Jean Grae is one of my favorite rappers right now. Even other artists I've reviewed like Little Dragon have a very strong female presence. You're right about me reviewing more male musicians than female, though. I don't consciously feel like I'm ignoring female musicians if that's what's being insinuated.
@enyafreak2007 Personally, I feel like I'm only going where my ears take me. I don't see what's so significant about being a female and a musician. If you're a musician, you're a musician. I don't care if you're black, white, male, female, transsexual, or whatever. Music is music. If I took into account who was and wasn't female when reviewing something, I'd probably be taking a lot of those other qualities into account as well. I don't see why this needs to become a gender thing...
@theneedledrop I wasn't meaning for it to be a gender issue-if you took it that way, that wasn't my intentions. I just wanted to know if you listened to female musicians and male musicians differently...I personally don't care what the gender is of the person, I just noticed that you do review a lot of albums from male musicians, but that's not a bad thing, it's just what happens to come up. I agree with you, musicians are musicians, it doesn;t matter...thanks for the answer.
