I was lucky enough to hear her perform many years ago. This small woman with tiny hands came out on the stage, sat down at the piano, started to play, and magic happened. She was one of the greatest pianists I have ever had the pleasure to hear. Glorious and brilliant.
she was a tremendous musician. What a natural born musician. Her phrasing was as natural as breathing. Anyone knows a better version than this here? I don t think so, you can make it different but not better.....
you look at this music and you see leaping octaves then runs that end with huge chords and you say each measure could have ended incatastrophe.Schnabelmade the worst rec in history of this con and he played it 100's of times.HOW DID THIS TINY WOMAN PLAY ALL THE INCREDIBLY DIFF REPERTOIRE SHE PLAYED EVEN RACHMAN with those tiny hands.WellGinaBachauer was tiny and made you thing she did tenths inMussorgsky.Just miracles !
This is about as fantastic a performance as it gets!! If it's the recording of the same performance she gave in NYC, I remember reading the review in the NYTimes. The critic implied that, while musical, she seemed overpowered by this monster concerto!! Shows that some critics haven't a clue what they're talking about...
JUST SUPERB!!!!! ALICIA DE LARROCHA HAS BEEN ONE OF THE GREATEST!!!! and some people only know her for her renditions of spanish music. IS TIME TO KNOW THAT SHE HAS PLAYED MUCH MORE THAN JUST MUSIC OF SPANISH COMPOSERS. SHE HAD A LONG REPERTOIRE (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, impressionist, etc). SHE HAS BEEN ONE OF THE GREATES OF THE KEYBOARD OF OUR TIME!!!!! YEEEEESSSSSSS
What a great artist she is!!!Alicia de Larrocha is very well known for her superb interpretations of spanish music, but this is an example that she is much more than just that. Mozart, Beethoven, Scarlatti, Grieg, Bach, Chopin, Liszt, Ravel, Brahms, Shumann, Shubert, etc, etc, etc. I had the chance to be in many of her live concerts and, believe me, she has been one of the best pianist of our time. God bless you, Alicia!!!!!!!!
What a find! The GreatLittleLady of the piano in Brahms2. All her wonderful qualities at amazing service of music. The RYTHM, the BIG style, full sound....The orchestra,(who are they?) match her and seem so happy to be led(!)by such a wonderful soloist. Thanx so much, and keep finding more!
I only wish this were a video and not only an audio recording. Madame de Larrocha was also recorded performing the Brahms 2nd Concerto with the Chicago Symphony at Ravinia, but the recording was never released.
Wonderful playing! I wonder when was the first time she played this concerto? It seems that the first time she played it in 1981 with Berlin RSO (others said as early as 1975), maybe I am wrong, anyone knows?
I can remember the exact date but it was in the early 1950 when she played this concert for the first time and on the same program was Beethoveen 4!!! If you need to know the exact date I can find out . . .
after consulting, with the sources who know, Alicia performed the Brahms for the first time in 1945 in Barcelona at the young age of 22, Just to mention that also on the same program was Bethoveen 4
Wow! Alicia played the Brahms 2nd and Beethoven 4th in one evening?! What a formidable virtuoso she was!
I have one more question, I have read somewhere that Alicia had played one of Prokofiev concerto, do you know which one she played? I think it's around 1950.
My favorite female pianist. WOW.

Prokofiev's first wife was from Barcelona
Alica studied the second and third concerto, playing only the third concerto, the main problem being the lack of orchestra parts in 1940 Spain.

she plays like an angel . I know she's got very small hands.I don't know how she plays this piece with such ease.
