The Big Show had his prime as The Giant in WCW, the WWE destroyed him like so many other talents; Vader, Ric Flair, Scott Steiner, Ron Simmons....................
@Triclopes: Hogan had already damaged Vader and neither Vince nor Shawn were big fans of his. Scott Steiner was all roided out and deteriorated by the time he returned to WWE at Survivor Series 2002.
I would love to see a match between the 1996-97 Big Show vs the 1997-99 Kane vs the early 90s Undertaker vs the early 90s Sid vs the mid 90s Kevin Nash vs the 1997 Kurrgan
@moodude16 I remember this guy, he was working out at a gym that a friend of my father owned. I was like 8 years old so this was a long time ago but I still have memories of seeing this guy and just how huge he was...a gentle giant to say the least
@ADTRKICKSASS i'd like to see your lazy potato chip eating ass do better, hey you can be a lazy weak arm chair critic all day long, but until you get in the wrestling ring and wrestle your opinion is worth two shits in a pot, well come to think of it though, i think i would pay money to see your obese hairy balding ass get beat up so bad and wind up on thumbtacks in a wrestling ring that would be so much fun to watch!
Of course, this never happened, and they decided to go with John Tenta, playing the Golga character. However, with Rick hovering around 6'8 & 300lbs, and Roadblock near 6'10 around 375lbs, they BOTH certainly had the size to become "real players" if the company had used them properly. Unfortunatley Joe D'Acquisto aka Roadblock is retired now. However, he accomplished A LOT on the indy circuit, and down in WWC in Puerto Rico as well. The same fate bodes true for another "jobber" named T.Rantula.
VERY, VERY, underrated wrestlers, in Rochester Roadblock & Rick Fuller. I've met Rick, and he is a great guy, & excellent ring veteran. One of the better "bigmen" of the profession, as a whole. Instead of WCW "jobbing" these two guys, they could have certainly done A LOT more with them. There were "minor" rumors for a while, that Roadblock would be part of a new Natural Disasters tag-team with Fred Ottman aka Typhoon.
Paul Wight is a lot more thin here. He'd be called "The Skinny Show" compared to now. I remember him doing dropkicks back then, and he could do a Moonsault back then even--talk about impressive.
Yeah he had that famous bald spot that Hogan & Macho Man made famous but the Bald Show was gonna happen. It was either Paul Heyman or Michael Hayes idea for the angle of Kurt shavin' Big Show since they were the 1's N charge of Smackdown! creative.
people tend to forget how athletic paul wright is he was an amazing basketball player and his lack of agility now is do to the weight he gained do to the surgury to save his life which ruined his matabalisim
However, another "indy talent" did grace a WWE ring, in T.Rantula. He unfortunatley never got far, but was supposed to work a program with The Undertaker, which i would have liked seeing. This also, happened to Kurrgan who was supposed, to work a MAJOR program with Undertaker that never materialized. Quite unfortunate, considering fo the two Kurrgan had FAR more potential than T.Rantula. At 6'7 325lbs he kept himself mainly on the indy circuit, having some bloody matches in IWA with Mic Foley.
The first time I saw the Interrogator (Kurrgan) I immediately tought that he was going to feud with UT very soon, he could have worked a hell of a program with Taker or maybe Sid and Vader if he was booked properly, just immagine if the WWF had decided
to form a new Skyscrappers team with Sid and Kurrgan they would have been unstoppable, Kurrgan had a very fearsome and intimidating look and yet they made a clown out of him along with the ICP
politics as usual, the rich and famous, always get all the spoils in the world, and don't have to work hard for anything, but when something they value that is great is gone, only then do they realize what they miss, I am referring to Vince McMahon, his family, and his business.
@tmbttes Kurrgan could have had a HELLUVA feud with Marc Calloway. And quite honestly, it was on the "booking sheets" to happen. Unfortunately, as you pointed out, they totally went in another direction with him. I think him and Paul Wight, could have been absoultely unstoppable, if they had teamed up together. And as far as height goes, they were VERY similar in that department, only weight seperated them, with Kurrgan at 350lbs.
He held the IWA belt in Puerto Rico, in a long rivarly aginst King Kong Bundy, who he got the better of on many occasions. Another "unknown" to many fans, was he was supposed to play the part of Golga, but instead John Tenta filled the role, god rest his soul. Before that, there was talk of him re-forming the natural disasters with John Tenta, due to Fred Ottman aka Typhoon having some issues. Neither happened of course, and we never saw Roadblock grace a WWE ring.....Cont next post.
and what about the Wall (R.I.P) remember how he was just getting into a interesting feud with Sid during the Millionare's Club-New Blood angle in WCW? he also that frightening look and certainly was better than most of today's big men in WWE and yet he never had a match with Sid and instead WCW also turned him into a clown as part of the MIA
Joe D'Aquisto was VERY under-rated, when it comes to his wrestling ability. Having watched and been a part of this sport, for 15 plus years now, i can honestly say that WCW goofed in not using him properly. I feel the same of Lochness, who was a HUGE british star known as Giant Haystacks. But you take someone like Roadblock at 6'8 375lbs and not use him properly was shocking to say the least. His greatest accomplisments, were on the indy scene no question......cont next post.
Remember Ron Reis (Reese from Raven's Flock)? he was also a good wrestler for his size, remember how he just towered over Big Show as the Yeti, but he really added some speed and even a few technical moves to his arsenal while in the Flock, he had a very good match with Perry Saturn in 1998 and didn't look like just another clumsy big man, of course he wasn't even close to Sick Boy in terms of speed and agility but he was very mobile anyways
I remember when the giant facet three guys on nitro and beat them all up at one time and choke slammed them one by one then pinned all three of them 1 2 3
That dropkick by Giant at 2:30 is incredible, it almost angers me seeing how damn athletic Paul Wight used to be and how lazy he quickly got. I'm gonna make a DVD of all Paul Wights best matches in his early days.
AGREED! He also looked a whole lot better then, why the hell did he cut his long hair?, that was the best part of his gimmick, when you are 7 foot 2 inches tall, long hair looks great, cause they way it moves and sways around, when you run in the ring, is so artistic, why he decided to go for the totally bald skinhead look is beyond me. My girlfriend and other women got really pissed off when Big Show cut his hair, it will take a lot of female fans to approach Paul and tell him to grow his hair
He went the skinhead route because he was losing his hair, look at some of the nwo wwe vids around 2002 when he joined, he had a sizable bald spot on the back of his head which got bigger over time.
that's why Wight along with Kevin Nash had a LOT of female fans cheering for them like crazy when both were in WCW, their long hair added to that special "mystical giants" aura that surrounded them back then, the only big man that made a haircut work just fine has been Undertaker thus far, he returned to his old "Mean Mark Callous" image in 2002 and looked great, losing the hair also didn't work for Kane
I hope Khali doesn't go "Stone Cold Khali" anytime soon
War Memorial Arena, Rochester, NY, October 28, 1987. Road Block's real name is Joe D'Aquisto. That match was never shown on TV i'm pretty sure about it.
