Things were not so clear 90 years ago except of course to people who just wanted to fight and fight because of a deep-seated hatred of Britain and the British(a fair description of de Valera?) I tend to see Collins as a more mature figure who saw that the links between Britain and Ireland were just too deep, too old and too complex to just sever at a stroke. And at the time of the Treaty this was a majority view in Ireland

The majority view in Ireland was for a completely separate Republic which had already been established by the people.

Once there was any kind of republic, I think he believed it could begin reversing the centuries of national decline and in due course most political goals achieved. Look at Scotland today where they can have a referendum on a total break with the UK. Or my own country, Wales, where similar options apply.
But UK Defence concerns(ports) and Ulster security concerns could not disappear overnight Collins knew.
